DEATH-HEALTH_HISTORY: Had a drinking problem and died of cirrhois of the liver

RECOLLECTIONS:
Charles William Drew first married his first cousin, Margaret [Maggie] Bolin,
on 4 Feb 1882, after she became pregnant by him. At that time in our history
young men who impregnated young ladies were forced to marry them at what was
called a shotgun wedding. The shotgun was held on the back of the groom by the
father of the bride. I have even heard of reluctant brides, but that didn't
make any difference in those days, as it was awful to have a child born out of
wedlock. I don't know if Charley loved Maggie. I have nothing passed down to me
that would say either way.

Maggie was the daughter of Maletha's [(Bolin) Drew] brother, William Bolin and
Jane Fulton. Maggie died 11 Jan 1886. She left two children. The older one,
William, b. 10 Aug 1882, died in 1891, and the younger one, Clarence, born 28
Dec 1883, died in 1922, never married.

Sarah Jane Conger, of Oskaloosa in Clay Co., IL, along with 2 girl friends, had
come to Moultrie county, [IL] in early 1887 looking for work. Sarah found work
as a housekeeper with Charlie's brother, James, who lived a quarter mile north
in Section 29 on the place called, the Grace Dolan farm in the 1978 plat map of
Jonathan Creek Township. James and his wife, Susan, decided Charley needed a
wife and mother for his two sons more than they needed a housekeeper and talked
up a marriage between Charlie and Sarah. They were married on 11 Sep 1887.

Sarah was born in Knox Co., IN and her parents brought her and her brother,
James, and sister, Harriet, to Clay county, Illinois in the spring of 1838.
Sarah's father was Richard Conger, b. 4 Oct 1833, in Knox Co., IN. Her mother
was Martha Davenport, born 19 June 1840 in Kentucky. They were married 14 Mar
1858 in Knox Co., IN.

Richard Conger died, 23 Mar 1893, in Mason City, IL where they had moved and he
was employed at a flour mill there. He is buried there. Martha died at her
daughter Sarah's house in Section 32 of Jonathan Creek Twp. on 23 Mar 1923.
She had outlived all her other children. She was the 6th person to die at the
above farm and is buried at Oskalossa Cemetery.

The Richard Conger family lived in several Clay county [IL] places. One of
them was near Farina and Sarah worked a summer or two in strawberry patches
near there. Sarah trailed her brother, Jim, around like a shadow and by doing
this learned to hunt and fish at an early age. One time, so the story goes,
she spent some time in an tree ... in the Little Wabash Valley. She had taken
the family boat out in the high water, when she had been told not to. The boat
got going too fast for her and as it passed under a tree limb, she grabbed it
and got out of the boat. Her brother, Jim, later rescued her after finding the
boat missing.

Charley was a director of Two Mile School (see History of Moultrie County
Schools, by Vera Slover, 1976). He served one term as road overseer in
District 9 which included the same four sections as the school district (see
Acts of Township Fathers).

Charley had a drinking problem and died of cirrhois of the liver. He was the
fourth to die in the house he'd built when he married Maggie. He had owned the
ground since 1878. At the time of his death he owned 450 acres.

Sarah continued to live in the house off and on until 1929 and then she and
daughter, Ruth, moved to town. Sarah joined the J.C. [does this mean Jonathan
Creek] Church in 1907 but the records don't show that Charley was ever a
member. He gave money for the building of the new church in 1891 so he surely
wasn't all bad.

The family is buried at Jonathan Creek Cemetery just about a quarter mile west
of the Bolin Cemetery, which is in Section 34. The J.C. Cemetery is in Section
33.

Sarah's 3rd son and 4th child was Clifford [Drew]. He married Sada M. Crowdson
just a few months past her 16th birthday. She became the 5th person to died in
the Drew house on 2 May 1913 from a tubal pregnancy.

Clifford went with several girls from then until he remarried. He was thought
to be a good catch and several parents introduced him to their daughters and
several young ladies tried to catch him. His mother moved across the creek
several times into another house they owned during the next few years. Each
time Clifford would become engaged she'd move herself and two duaghters. When
the engagement was broken, she'd come back. The younger one, Cora, married in
1919. Sarah and Ruth, who was physically crippled from birth, moved to
Sullivan later.

Clifford and Stella (Beals) Drew lost their first child, Elva Pearl. He was
born 28 Jul 1928 and died 16 Apr 1929, the 6th to die at the Drew farm. His
obituary states he died of acute bronchitis. He had been named for his
mother's youngest brother, Elva Davis Beals, and Pearl was the name of one of
Clifford's war buddies.

Clifford had been in the Navy in World War I, 1917-1919, and rose to the rank
of Fireman First Class. I once asked him why his buddies were all promoted to
petty officer classes and he remained a seaman. His reason was that he had
been ashore in hospitals so much suffering from sea sickness. His major
campaign was the Removal of the North Sea Mines (see National Geographic
magazine of February 1920 for an article on this.).

He served as a director of Two Mile School, where he had also attended, for
many years before it was consolidated along with 4 other schools to form
Jonathan Creek School.

He inherited the home 80 from his dad and also a large mortgage. He had sent
enough money home while in the Navy to pay off this mortgage. His former
father-in-law, Pete Crowdson, who had been receiving the money, spent it for
his own expenses. Clifford ended up paying the mortgage twice, finishing in
1939.
