Milton, 9, IA; Sarah, 6, IA; Elizabeth, 4, IASPOUSE: Melissa Wright was the 2nd wife of William Stevens.
HEALTH_HISTORY-DEATH:
Around 1880, Melissa Stevens became ill with tuberculosis. It took several difficult months for death to knock at the door. Neighbor women helped care for the herd of small urchins, and one ten year old girl is reputed to have lived with the Stevens for a few months to help. We are not certain when Melissa died. Her headstone reads 1884, but William remarried in 1882, so I believe that Melissa died in 1881. Buried with her is Isaac, who died shortly after William's remarriage. Family tradition says he died of neglect.

BIOGRAPHY:
Melissa Wright, the first child of John Conger Wright and his first wife, Margaret McElroy, was born on 8 Apr 1834 in Monroe Co., OH. She was followed by three brothers, William, Reuben and Jesse and then a sister, Mary Ann. Her mother died in 1844/1845, 12 years after her marriage to John It did not take long for Melissa to have a stepmother, Lucinda, the younger sister of her mother, Margaret.William Stevens arrived in Appanoose Co., IA in January of 1860. War clouds were rolling, but that did not deter him from buying land nor from courting, Melissa, John C. Wright's beautiful daughter. They were married on 16 Jun 1861 at Appanoose Co., IA. William already had one child, William, Jr. who had reached his 12th birthday.
It was two years before the first child of William and Melissa arrived. Issac Stevens is reported to have been born in 1863, by the 1870 Missouri Federal Census. However, family tradition says, very strongly, that he was a stepson of Melissa's, besides William, Jr. Isaac had no use of his legs, so his brothers carried him on their backs during later years.
Sherman Stevens arrived in 1865, with Grant arriving in 1867. In the middle of 1869, with Melissa expecting, the family traveled to Henry County, MO. There Charles (Charlie) was born in October 1869. Melissa had two more energetic sons, John in 1872 and William in 1875.
Melissa's husband ran a small sawmill. Considering that he regularly needed new timber, it is assumed that the move from Appanoose County brought him to new cutting. It is assumed that it didn't pay well enough, in that he gave up the farm after Melissa died in 1881.
His third wife was Unity Jarvis. This marriage seemed ill-fated and he died in 1891, alone in an abandoned cabin on the Grand River.
Melissa contacted tuberculois, perhaps as early as 1878. Tradition says that community women helped nurse her and to care for the small band of Stevens boys. Melissa died in 1881 in Henry Co., MO and was buried in the Norris Cemetery.

William StevensCOMMENT: Apparently William Stevens was married twice. The name of his first wife is unknown. They had at least one son, William Jr., b. Abt. 1849, d. between 1870/1875. William, Jr. married in 1869 to Eliza, age 24, and had one child, Rose Marie. [Note: No source citation. REH]

BIOGRAPHY:
William Stevens was born in Monroe County, Ohio, in 1819. Like many, he moved farther west. As a sawyer he had to keep an eye out for fresh, marketable timber. Thus, every few years, he moved. He left behind the land that produced 2500 oil wells and the railroad that became a part of Monroe County. His first 42 years are obscure, including his first marriage, which was probably in Monroe County. But we have no record of that since the Courthouse burned so regularly.
He next appears near Centerville, [Appanoose Co.], Iowa in January 1860.
In 1860 when William Stevens came to Appanoose County, Iowa he had 10 year old William Jr. with him. There may have been older children, but we are currently not certain. [Note: Robert Guilinger reports that there was an older daughter named, Rachel, age 14, listed in the 1860 census of Sharon Twp., Appanoose Co., IA.]
William soon met a dark-haired, dark-eyed beauty named Melissa Wright, who became his second wife in August 1861. She also had been born in Monroe County, Ohio, in 1834.
Family tradition says that William also had with him a younger son, Isaac, who died in 1882/1883 and was crippled and unable to walk. The Federal Census of Missouri in 1870 and 1880 lists him as the first child of Melissa and William.
William's marriage to Melissa, a vivacious lass, brought five sons about whom we have no doubt: Sherman, Grant, Charlie, John and William. As was the custom in those days, William the younger, had the name of his older half-brother, William Jr., who had died sometime between 1870 and 1875 of reasons unknown, leaving a widow and one daughter.
In 1882 William gave up the farm, which he tried to buy with borrowed money. It did not work. In 1882 her also married a third time a woman named, Unity.
His family being torn asunder, his new wife, Unity [Jarvis], wanted the Stevens boys out of the house to make room for her own five children from a previous marriage.
The five younger Stevens told tales of their lives on the ranch of Preston Blevins nearby, then as employees of Charlie Gains on another larger ranch about five miles south of their homestead.
The last few years for William were sad, with failed business, twice widowed (we think) and a very poor choice for a third wife. He was found dead in an abandoned cabin on the Grand River in 1891. He is buried with Melissa [at Henry Co., MO.]
All his five younger sons lived into their eighties, each married only once. They were stalwart, hard-working citizens, loving to play pitch with each other, fiercely competitive.

CEMETERY: According to Tom Stevens, William and Melissa share a stone with their son, Isaac, in the Norris Cemetery, halfway between Clinton and Urich, MO and 2 miles north of Hartwell, Henry Co., MO.

6035. Isaac Stevens
Isaac StevensCOMMENT: Family tradition is that Isaac Stevens was the son of William Stevens by a marriage prior to his marriage to Melissa Wright. Researcher, Tom Stevens states he doesn't accept this information and Robert Guilinger is in agreement. Robert Guilinger writes, "William Stevens was a widower in the 1860 census. He married Melissa Wright in 16 Jun 1861 and Isaac Stevens was born sometime in 1863."
RECOLLECTIONS: Isaac Stevens was not ambulatory due to what must have been polio. He is reported to have been excellent with rugs and chair caning. It is said that he died Abt. 1884 due to the neglect of the 3rd wife of his father, William Stevens.
