2695. Henry Herschel Conger

Henry Herschel Conger

Problem: Was he born at Conger, Washington Co., PA or Lindley's Mills, Washington Co., PA? CFA I, lists both.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Henry Herschel Conger, son of David Conger and Mary Bell, gives the following information about his grandfather David: "He fought in the Revolutionary War, for our Independence. He was buried here in Dunn's Station, on the W & W R.R. in Morris Twp., Washington Co., Penn. This is near my grandfather's odl home farm, which is now owned by the heirs of my brother, David Allison Conger. It was willed to him by his father, David Conger, in 1792, and he fell heir to it from his father, David, about 1833.

I don't know if my great grandmother was buried there. The grave at this place was marked with a rough undressed stone, without name or date, and I saw this many times when I was a small boy. The plot of ground has been worked over and cultivated for more than 60 years (in 1908), and there is not a thing to show there was ever a grave there. Standing on this plot is a blacksmith's shop and garden.

Grandfather and Grandmother were buried 5 miles from this point in a grave yard on Bates Fork Creek. Their graves are properly marked with granite.

I saw the old pocketbook a few days ago that belonged to my great grandfather, the date on it is 1758. It is made out of heavy leather, about seven inches long, and folds like a mussel shell with a pocket on either side. When it opens it is about seven inches square. David A. Conger's heirs have it, and prize it very highly." (The owner of this pocketbook would have been David Conger, 1741, who died in the Revolution.)

QUESTION: Where was Lindley's Mills (Lindly's Mills) Located? David Dodd states, "I have a detailed map of Washington and Greene counties, PA, which shows Lindley's Mills to be about 3 miles southwest of Prosperity in Washington, Co., PA.

BIOGRAPHY:
Demas Lindley, with his family came in 1773 [to Washington Co., PA], and with him twenty other families, all from New Jersey, nearly all from the county of Morris, which had been his home before this migration. The families settled at different points along Ten-Mile Creek.

Demas Lindley located upon four hundred acres of land situated on the middle fork of Ten-Mile. This property was warranted to him, Feb. 5, 1785, receiving the title of "Mill Place," it's location being very near the present village of Prosperity. (Prosperity, PA was platted out in 1848, by Robert Wallace, page 845.)

Mr. Lindley became owner of another tract of land called, "Headquarters," warranted to him on 18 Apr 1796, containing 368 acres.

A fort was early established upon the property of Mr. Lindley, called Lindley's Fort, and was the rendezvous for the residents of the county.

Mr. Lindley built a grist and merchant mill on his property soon after his settlement here, the mills were known as "Lindley's Mills."

Demas Lindley died in 1818.
