EMIGRATION: Went to McLean Co., IL in 1859.
CHURCH_AFFILIATION: Towanda, McLean Co., IL, Baptist Church
CEMETERY: Smith Grove Cemetery is located two miles east of Towanda, IL.
BIOGRAPHY:
Aaron Harvey Conger was reared in his native county, [Licking Co., OH] and was educated in the typical log school house, with its [c]rude benches and wide fireplace. While his opportunities for acquiring an education were not of the best, he made the best use of them, and by extensive reading in after years he became a well-informed man.He was reared to farm life, and remained at home assisting in the farm work until he was twenty-one years old. He then went to work in a woolen mill, and in three years mastered all its branches. Leaving the mill at the expiration of that time, he went to work for a stock buyer, raising and marketing his stock, and with him he continued four years. He first received eighteen dollars per month, but before leaving the employ of that gentleman he was getting fifty dollars per month.
Aaron saved his money and went to McLean County, [IL] in 1859, where he purchased eighty acres of land for $12.00 per acre. His acreage later totaled 280 acres. He also conducted a grain and coal business at Fletcher, a small station near his home, for many years.
Aaron Harvey Conger once ran on the Prohibition ticket as a candidate for the state senate, and polled a heavy vote. He was also a candidate for sheriff of McLean county and again polled a heavy vote. He always felt he would rather be beaten in a good cause than to be successful in a bad one.
In his township he served as collector a number of years, and for thirty years was a school director and took particular pride in his home school. He always gave special attention to the employment of competent teachers, and as a consequence this one school sent out more than twenty-five pupils who held responsible and prominent positions.
Aaron traveled quite extensively from coast to coast, and always felt he could learn much from every one with whom he came in contact. He was greatly esteemed in his community.

Aaron H. Conger, my father left Ohio in 1854 and came to McLean County, Illinois. He purchased his first land in 1860 and continued buying through the years as he and my mother raised their family. He never lost an opportunity to speak against liquor and the downfall if caused.

Ellen J. WhiteCHURCH_AFFILIATION: Towanda, Mc Lean Co., IL, Baptist Church
RECOLLECTIONS: Ethel Conger Heagler said of her mother: "Mother's ancestry goes back to the Whites of Mass. Tradition says to William White of the Mayflower, and I have reason to believe this is correct. George White, who married Sarah Bumpas at Rochester, Mass. in 1728 had a son, George, b. in Mass., 1737, who became George White of the Revolutionary War in New York. He and his wife, Patience, and all their family were members of the church in Amenia, N.Y. (N.Y. Gen & Biog Record, Vol. 35, p. 203). Their oldest son, Nathaniel, b. 1759, was a sergeant in the Revolution. He married Hannah Finch in N.Y. in 1785 and they were mother's grandparents."

[Note: There seems to be an error in this cemetery data. The calculated birthdate is, Abt. 12 Feb 1829. Her brother, George Washington Conger was born on 23 May 1829. We know from the 1850 Monroe Co., OH census that she was born Abt. 1835. Age, 21 in the 1856 Appanoose Co., IA census supports the 1835 birth year. I think the error is in the death year from this cemetery extraction. It is more likely that she died in 1879 than in 1873. Probably part of the digit "9" was worn away. Using as the date of death, 28 Nov 1879 and the age information as found on the stone, her birth date calculates to Abt. 12 Feb 1835. Richard E. Henthorn]

MARRIAGE-CONFLICT: What was the date of marriage? Some list 4 Apr 1886. The biographical sketch of E.M. Conger lists, 4 May 1886.COMMENT:
Concerning the family of Moses Conger [and Elizabeth Powell which appeared on] pg 379 in CFA: It would seem another son should have been included in the family group -- Elias Milton Conger, b. 4 Feb 1846. Neither, George Washington [Conger born] 1829, nor Elias appear in the 1850 census of Monroe Co., OH with this family group, though all the rest did. Since George W.[ashington] left Ohio for Appanoose Co., IA at [the] age [of] 21, this probably explains why he wasn't with the family at the time of the census. It is possible that his brother, Elias, went with him or that Elias was a farm hand with another family. [Elias couldn't have been a farm hand. He was was 4 years old at thetime of the 1850 census. REH]In a County History of Chariton County, MO, in a biographical sketch on CONGERS, it starts with: "Elias Milton and George W. Conger, brothers were born in the east," etc. They both enlisted in the same Missouri company for the Civil War at the same time and place. They are both buried in the same plot in Sumner, MO. Therefore, Elias [Milton] Conger is placed in this family.
[Note: Joyce Posey points out that they aren't buried in the same plot.]Elias must have been better known as, Silas, as that is the name on his gravestone. [Note: This assumes that an error wasn't made on the gravestone. REH]
[Elias Conger] ... enlisted in Co. C, 42d MO Inf, Vol., on 11 Aug 1864 at Unionville, Putnam [Co.], MO (same day as, [his brother], George W.). He was described as being, age 18, 5', (?)"; eyes, gray; hair, fair; complexion, fair.
He and George received injuries from the same accident: Elias being crushed under a falling ambulance while boarding the boat at St. Louis. He was unconscious until sometime the day following the accident. [Note: This account doesn't agree with the account in the biographical sketch of E.M. Conger. REH]
No death date is given in any of the records. However, in April 1923 an affidavit giving his condition as being, 77 years of age and unable to dress and undress himself without the aide of someone on account of weakness and general disability of age. He may have died soon thereafter.

BIOGRAPHY:
E.M. Conger, a well known farmer and stockman of Cunningham township, [Chariton Co., MO] is a veteran of the Civil War and a pioneer of Chariton County. He was born in February, 1846, in Monroe County, Ohio, the son of Moses Conger.Moses Conger and his wife were natives of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1851, they moved to Iowa, where they remained until 1866. They then came to Chariton County and settled on a farm in Cunningham township, which was four miles east of the present farm of E.M. Conger, the subject of this sketch. Moses Conger died at the age of 75 years.
E.M. Conger was reared on his father's farm and attended school in Iowa. He enlisted in the army Aug. 16, 1864, and served with the 42nd Missouri Volunteers. Mr. Conger enlisted in Missouri and was sent to Nashville, Tenn. While in the service he was wounded when a wagon broke down. When he entered the army Mr. Conger said he didn't have any money, but when he was discharged he had ten dollars more than the government paid him. Mr. Conger has always followed farming and stock raising. He now owns a well improved farm of 170 acres and he is a breeder of hogs, shipping two cars each year. Mr. Conger also raises cattle and mules.
On May 4, 1886, E.M. Conger married Miss Mariah Dillion, a native of Pennsylvania. To this union the following children were born: Orville, living in Idaho; Lola Belle, living in Chariton County; Everett, at home; Lizzie, living in Mexico; and Georgia A., at home. Georgia Conger was born in Sept., 1896, and is a college graduate. Mariah (Dillion) Conger died in 1898 and is buried in Lakeside Cemetery at Sumner [MO]. Both of Mr. Conger's sons served in the World War. Everett Conger served in the United States Navy for two years and made 14 trips overseas. Orville Conger served with the Marines and was in France for 18 months.
Mr. Conger is a Republican and a member of the Christian Church. He is a highly respected citizen of Chariton County and has a wide acquaintance and many friends.

Elias Conger (1826-1865) was the first born son of David Conger (12 Jan 1804-30 Jun 1892) and his first wife, Nancy Mattox (1806-1826), who died in child-birth or shortly thereafter from complications of child-birth.Elias was born, apparently in the latter half of 1826, and it is not known for sure who raised him. David, his father, married again in about 1829. The second wife, Maria Palmer (1807-1832), passed away in 1832. David married his third wife, Mary Bell (9 May 1811-6 Sep 1889), on 30 Aug 1934 and she remained his wife for 55 years until her death in 1889.
Elias may have been raised by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mattox, as he inherited a 103 acre farm from them in the late 1850's (probated in 1859). It is believed that this farm was located near Hackney's Mill, near Amity, Morris Twp., Washington county, Pennsylvania.
Elias is thought to have married Anna (Unknown), b. abt. 1829, around 1857. They had a first born daughter, Mary Lorinda, in about 1858 (Abt. 1858-2 Mar 1922). In the 1860 census of Morris Twp., Washington county, PA Elias is listed as a farmer, age 33, with a farm valued at $2500 and having $300 savings. He is listed with wife, Anna, age 31 and daughter, Mary, age 2. All were listed as born in Pennsylvania.
Some accounts in Washington county, PA list Elias Conger as having died in the Civil War, which seems logical since he died in 1865. This date of death is substantiated by information found at the gravesite of Elias Conger. In 1987, the author found the grave of Elias Conger in a small, un-named rural cemetery in southeastern Washington county, Pennsylvania. The gravestone clearly reads, Elias Conger, 1826-1865. As of August 1999, researchers have been unable to confirm military service in any of the Pennsylvania units during the Civil War. A request is pending with the National Archives to see if he may have served in a Union Army unit from adjoining West Virginia.
Elias and Anna are believed to have had two more children after the birth of Mary Lorinda in 1858, namely:
John Lincoln Conger, (Oct 1860-16 Jan 1921) born near Hackney's Mill,
Morris Twp., Washington County, PABelle (or Isabelle) Conger, (Dec 1862-?) born in Washington County, PA
The date of birth of Belle (or Isabelle) came from census data (1870, 1880, 1900, 1910). Belle was raised by her Grand-Uncle and Aunt, Ephraim Conger (8 Jan 1809-Abt. 20 Nov 1893) and Eleanor Iams (2 Apr 1815-24 Feb 1907). They had a larger prosperous farm and were known to take in relatives, who had lost one or more of their parents. Belle married A. Curtis Horn after 1880 and apparently they had no children. Belle and A. Curtis Horn moved from Washington county, PA and resided in Crawford county, PA (near Meadville) at the time of the 1900 and 1910 census. There were no children listed in either census.
Mary Lorinda Conger married John L. Horn (8 Nov 1849-10 Jan 1929) on 24 Dec 1878. At the time this article was written it is not known if John L. Horn and A. Curtis Horn were related.

CEMETERY: According to David M. Dodd, Elias and Anne Conger are buried at the Upper Ten Mile Cemetery, near Prosperity, Morris Twp., Washington Co., PA
CEMETERY-COMMENT:
David M. Dodd wrote to Robert Guilinger, "... I believe that the Morris Tws. map showing the Elias Conger farm with the Cemetery three miles east is the same Cemetery as that on the West Bethlehem map near Ten Mile which you are asking if it may be the Lower Ten Mile Cemetery. This Cemetery is the Pleasant Hill Cemetery which is in Amwell Tws. I have a listing of the tombstones for the Upper Ten Mile Cemetery which is in Prosperity, Morris Tws., that has Elias Conger, d. 9 August 1865, age 38 and Anne D. Strouss, b. 18 Oct 1828, d. 16 May 1883, age 55. Elias was buried with his first wife as is Dr. S.S. Strouss with his first wife Jane Dodd ... at the Lower Ten Mile Cemetery. The Lower Ten Mile Cemetery is in Amity, Amwell Tws. This is where my Dodd ancestors are buried. Anne's parents, John and Sarah (Miller) Day are also buried at the Upper Ten Mile Cemetery as are many other Day's." The Upper Ten Mile Cemetery is about 1/2 mile to the southeast of Prosperity, PA.
Anne DayBIRTH: The 1860 census supports a birth year of Abt. 1829. The 1870 census supports a birth year of Abt. 1828.
NAME-CONFLICT: Annie Day; Anna Day; Anne Day; Mrs. Anne Conger
RESIDENCES: Amity, Amwell Twp., Washington Co., PA
SPOUSE: Anne Day was the 2nd spouse of Dr. Simon Schnider Strouss. They married on 12 Mar 1868 in Washington Co., PA. Dr. Strouss was born 10 Jan 1810 in Allegheny Co., PA and died on 24 Apr 1883 in Washington Co., PA.
BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Simon Schnider Strouss (Second husband of Anne (Day) Conger) The first recorded history of the Strouss family in the United States was enacted in Northampton county, Penn. David Strouss and wife came over from Leipsic, Germany, about the year 1750. Of this date we are not quite certain, but there is conclusive evidence that they sailed about the middle of the eighteenth century.David Strouss was a musician and also somewhat of a fighter. He was chorister in the German Lutheran Church, and took up arms with his adopted fellow - countrymen in the war of Revolution. That he was a soldier worthy of the name, we know from the fact that he was made colonel under Washington.
After the war he settled down to quiet farm life in Northampton county. His son, John Strouss, moved to Allegheny county, Penn., in 1806. He was a millwright by trade, but as he grew older, country life and bucolic charms increased in attractiveness to him, and he started West for his fortune. He pitched his family tent on a little creek in Allegheny county, about twenty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, now the junction of Allegheny, Beaver and Washington counties. Here he spent the remainder of his days. When asked by his children later in life, why he did not settle nearer the confluence of the two rivers, he would reply: "I could see no great advantage then. Pittsburgh was only a few houses near an old fort. One cart load of produce would supply its daily demand, and if we shipped down the river we were obliged to walk back or row up stream, which was slower and harder work than walking." So he concluded to go father into the country and establish a little kingdom of his own. We can look back and say: "What a mistake he made." But, perhaps, our conclusion would be too hasty. Viewed from a financial point of view, doubtless it was a mistake; but when we consider the fact that the thread of life has been spun to an unusual length to almost all the descendants of this line, we may credit it to pure air, sanitary living, and muscle - making necessities of this pioneer farmer.
John Strouss married Mary Schnip, September 10, 1795, and there were born to them four sons and five daughters: Lydia, Elizabeth, Jonas, John, David, Mary, Simon S., Hannah, and Martha.
Mary Strouss died in 1815, and John married the second time to Annie McCoy. There were born to him of this marriage three sons: William, James and Henry.
Of these seven sons, Dr. Simon S. Strouss (whose likeness appears with this sketch) was the youngest of the first marriage. From this brief history of ancestry we can form an idea of the limited pleasures, and opportunities for anything else than farm work, that fell to him in his youth. The "paterfamilias" and his wife and twelve children all believed and practiced strict economy and the daily catechism of hard work, relieved on Sundays by the austere principles and rigorous observance of "Blue-Stocking" Presbyterianism which creed, slightly modified, has been adhered to by nearly all this large family.
Dr. Strouss was born in Allegheny county, Penn., Wednesday, January 10, 1810. His educational advantages were necessarily quite limited. Even public schools were unthought of in his neighborhood, and he was obliged to search a few of not the best books and pamphlets for his little store of general knowledge. Finally, to his great delight, a Latin school was started in Hopewell church, near his father's farm, and he, having expressed a preference for the medical profession, was permitted to study this dry language in all it original dryness, for a few months. Thus equipped, as to his mental outfit, he came to Washington county and read medicine with Dr. Jonathan Letherman, who at that time had an office near Canonsburg. On a faded sheet of old-fashioned letter paper we find the following: "To all whom it may concern: This is to certify that Simon Strouss has attentively and diligently studied the science of medicine, including anatomy, surgery, midwifery, and therapeutics, and I can further state that his moral character is unimpeachable. February 20, 1831. Jonathan Letherman, M.D." This was his diploma, and now he starts out in the world fully equipped, as Dr. Strouss.
He first went to Pittsburgh, and practiced about one year with Dr. Wray, of that city. In 1832 and 1833 he practiced in Beaver county, located in what is now Independence (then Hopewell) township. He left there in the fall of 1833 and established an office in Amity, Amwell township, Washington Co., Penn. It was there that a long and useful life was spent, in service to his fellow-men. He was eminently successful in every sense of the word. Beloved by his clients and respeced by all with whom he came in contact. Compared with present customs, his remuneration for service was small; yet his practice became so extensive that he accumulated a comfortable fortune. With this he was liberal to the end of his days. The unfortunate always found a sympathizing helper, and of his church he was a strong moral and financial supporter.
Dr. Strouss first married, August 12, 1836, Jane F. Dodd, who was the eldest in the family of nine children of Rev. Cephas Dodd, viz: Jane F.; Sarah; Thaddeus, M.D.; Cornelia; Elizabeth; Hannah; James F.; Cephas, M.D.; and Elias F., M.D. Their father was the son of Rev. Thaddeus Dodd, the founder and first pastor of Upper and Lower Ten-Mile Churches, Washington county; Rev. Dodd commenced his labor there in 1777, and later in his work was one of the principal actors in the establishing of what is now Washington and Jefferson College.
Mrs. Strouss died Thursday, August 13, 1863. There were born of this marriage two sons and five daughters.
Dr. Strouss was married, the second time, March 12, 1868, to Mrs. Anne Conger ("nee" Anne Day). There were no children of this marriage.
Of the seven children we record the following: Hanna D., born September 20, 1837, died September 29, 1843; Mary Jane, born March 26, 1839; Cephas D., born January 1, 1841, died September 26, 1843; Martha Elizabeth, born November 19, 1843; John D., still-born; Sarah Ann, born March 13, 1846; Ruth D., born June 11, 1848, died October 3, 1858.
Of these, Mary Jane married William C. Condit, July 8, 1858; Martha Elizabeth married Demas McCollum, December 4, 1863; Sarah Ann married David B. Baker, March 2, 1865. These three daughters settled on farms given them by their father, and are still living in Washington county.
Dr. Strouss died Tuesdsay, April 24, 1883 and his wife on Wednesday, May 16, 1883. Thus within three weeks this beloved old man and his worthy wife passed away, breaking the Strouss line in this branch of the family as no sons were left to carry the name.
The life of Dr. Strouss was one of undeniable consistency, and in his old age there was allotted to him the esteem and regard that true worth justly merits. He was jovial, kind-hearted and earnest. Always willing to sacrifice personal comfort and consideration for a suffering patient. He early acquired a practice that extended to a radius of twelve or fifteen miles from his office. There was considerable of a German element in his looality, [sic] and they still reverence the memory of Dr. Strouss. His pills and drops were a panacea for all their ailments. Many of them affirm that even his jolly presence was enough to put one beyond the notice of suffering. Although he never read psychology, yet he understood the influence of mind over matter, and the power of the will. He had the true secret of the practitioner. This was evinced in his treatment of fevers, in which he was eminently successful; often being called as council, especially in such cases to other localities.
He was an earnest, active follower of the Master, always at his place with heart and purse in the Presbyterian Church of Lower Ten-Mile. He did his life work well, and has left us a noble example of an upright, useful and honorable life.
As a rule, Dr. Strouss never speculated or tampered with the vagaries of fortune. Once he was tempted by the Western sheep craze, and ventured some capital; but finding himself losing, he withdrew, and devoted himself more exclusively to his chose professsion. He has gone to his reward, and to us, his descendants, there is left a sacred memory and Christian example. May we strive toward true merit as he did, and preserve the mantle he has left to us, with his benediction, unsullied from dishonor's pollution. For the name and honor is ours to carry before the searching eyes of an exacting world. This feeble tribute we offer as a token of our undying gratitude, love and esteem.
