2657. Charles Atkinson Conger
Charles Atkinson CongerPARENTS: Elias Conger and Margaret Atkinson
CONFLICT: Maxine Crowell Leonard lists his name as, Charles Crogen Conger and says he was buried at Kearney, NE in Vol. 1. She changed the name to Charles A. Conger in Volume 2, p. 714. Robert Guilinger states that he has seen photos of the grave of Charles and Harmony Conger taken at the Older Cemetery, Eustis, NE. He also adds that "Crogen" was a Conger family nickname.
MARRIAGE: A marriage date of Abt. March 1840 in Monroe Co., OH has been suggested. There is no courthouse record of this marriage due to a courthouse fire in the 1860's. This dates seems unlikely since marriages in Ohio usually didn't take place at age 15. It seems more likely that the marriage might have taken place Abt. Mar 1845 which would have made the bride's age, 20. The first child, Ellen E. was born in Nov 1845 which would be consistent with a marriage date of 1845.

COMMENT: Mrs. Irvin (Helen Wright) Miller of Foster, NE was a descendent. She claimed that her ancestor was Charles A. Conger, b. 1820 in Girard, IL who married, Katherine Harminey and had children: Elbert, Ellen, Ruth (Carmichael) and Mary (Raycraft).[Note: While Charles A. Conger was not born in Girard, IL and the surname of his wife was, Erlewine, it does appear that Mrs. Irvin had most of her facts straight, including the names of the children and their husbands. Could Charles have lived in Girard, IL at one time? Other information in the Conger Confab article of Maxine Leonard appears to be in error and therefore is not quoted here. REH]

("John Lincoln Conger," 1 Oct 1996, by Mary Jo Khan)
BIOGRAPHY:
Ellen taught school and boarded at various times. In Elm Creek, Nebraska, Ellen boarded at the Conrad home. The Conrad grandmother had been gone for a while and her house left vacant. Ellen was going to live for the year in the furnished house. Mr. Conrad and his younger brother had been sent back from Omaha with their grandmother to help her with organizing the heavy work "the old ladies wanted done." Everybody at the Conrad house was already up when Ellen came in from the neighbors. Mrs. Conrad inquired as to why she was at the neighbor lady's home when she had a place at the Conrad house. Ellen told Mrs. Conrad that she was going to have to corral the bed bugs that had infested the place in her absence. His Grandmother Conrad drew herself up haughtily and replied "That is not possible, Miss Conger. We haven't one single bedbug in the whole house." "That is quite true," Ellen replied. "They are all married and have large families."Ellen had brought her own milk cow. Mrs. Conrad had organized her grandsons into the school that milking cows was "men's work." Ellen grabbed a bucket and went to do the job when the time came. His younger brother (about eleven) told Ellen that it was too bad she didn't have a husband. Ellen's answer was, "Young Man, I have a dog that growls, a parrot that swears, a fireplace that smokes, and a cat that stays out all night. Why should I want a husband?" Mr. Conrad at one hundred and one said that to this day every time he sees a single older woman he thinks of Ellen's above answer and has a good laugh. Mrs. Conrad and her grandsons stayed a couple of months while she decided if she really wanted to leave Ellen in charge of her house in her absence.
During this period, a couple of his cousins did the following: They took the body of a centipede, the wings of a butterfly, the legs of a grasshopper, and the head of a beetle, and glued these together to form a weird creature. With the composite insect in a box, they called on Ellen. "Can you tell us what sort of a bug this is?" Ellen looked at the specimen quizzically and then looked at the boys. "Did it hum?" she inquired solemnly. "Oh, yes Mam," replied the boys. "Well, then," Ellen answered, "It is a humbug."

QUESTION: Can anyone cite a source for a middle initial of "A." or the middle name, Atkinson? His mother was an Atkinson. JoNelle Linnaus points out that her mother said he did not have a middle name. She also points out that in the notice of probate for Elias Conger (1789-1869) his name is given as: "Aaron A."

BIBLE:
The Aaron Conger Bible has been passed down through the family. When Aaron Conger (1825-1892) married his third wife, Jane Mabe, about 1866/1867, the Bible was a gift to her. Jane died on 22 Jan 1888 at their homestead in Keya Paha Co., NE, possibly from cancer, although the frontier doctor did not diagnose it. In March, after Jane's death, Aaron Conger gave the Bible to Elias and Sarah Conger who were also homesteading in Keya Paha county. Elias and Sarah Conger passed the Bible on to their daughter, Josephine Conger Wagner. She in turn gave the Bible to her daughter, JoNelle Wagner Linnaus who shared copies of 5 pages from the Bible. The information is presented below as nearly as recorded in the Bible as possible. The front page of the Bible shows that it was printed by: PHILADELPHIA; J.M. StODDART & CO.; CINCINNATI: QUEEN CITY PUBLISHING CO. At the top of this page in long hand is written: Presented to Elias Conger From Aaron Conger March The 10 1888. The entries are in the hand writing of: first, Jane Mabe Conger (in a very nice style of handwriting) and second, Sarah Garner Conger (whose handwriting was not so pretty).Page labeled: FAMILY RECORD

Mary Jane PurtlebaughProblem: Was her surname, Purtlebaugh, Purdlebaugh, Purtebaugh or Pertlebaugh? According to Robert Guilinger and JoNelle Linnaus the spelling is, Purtlebaugh and that spelling is used here.
PARENTS: Her parents, Eliza Mayhew and Daniel Purtlebaugh, were married on 8 Mar 1822 at Frederick Co., VA. I have a book, "I Am a Purtlebaugh," by Geraldine Alford, written in 1978, which uses the spelling with the "u". This seems to be the standard spelling. On census records in the 1800's the spelling varies. In the Conger family Bible, the surname appears to be spelled with an "a", or a "u" written on top of a vowel that was closed at the top.

BIRTH-DEATH: b. 16 Feb 1824, Belmont, Belmont Co., OH; d. 27 May 1855, during the birth of her 5th son at Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN, near Bethany, buried, Bartholomew Co., IN

Many of the Purtlebaugh family were buried in the Lawton Cemetery, the South Bethany Christian Church Cemetery, or the Haislup Methodist Cemetery. These are located near Bethany in Harrison Township, Bartholomew Co., IN. The Methodist Cemetery is overgrown and impossible to get into.

Jo said that Captain eventually went to North Dakota, and from there her family heard that he had married a widow with several children.

OBITUARY: On Wednesday evening, June 26, [1901], Mr. E.A. Conger of Vallonia, [KS] died at his home. Over two years ago he received a parlytic stroke from which he never fully recovered, although able to walk about home and ride to town. Since January of this year he has been confined to the house and bedfast since February. He bore his suffering with patience and fortitude until death came as a release from earthly pain. The funeral was held at the house, after which he was interred in the Vallonia Cemetery.
Mr. Conger was born in Monroe County, Ohio, February 4, 1828. In 1860 he moved with his family to Virginia where he resided one year. He then moved to Illinois in which state he enlisted in the Army and faithfully served his country in it's most perilous need for more than a year. After the close of the war he moved with his family to Dodge County, Nebraska where he continued to live until he came to Decatur County, [KS] in 1884, where he has remained until his death.
On November 10, 1851 he married Miss Ruble who still lives to mourn his loss. There has been born into the home 7 children - 3 boys and 4 girls. Three only of which survive their father, 2 boys, Isaac and Albert Conger and 1 daughter, Mrs. David Coulter. During Mr. Conger's residence in this county, he has proven himself to be an industrious farmer and respected citizen. So long as he was able, he was a hard worker and a good business man. His absence will be long felt by the community.
His friends extend their sympathy to those who are left to mourn his loss.

BIOGRAPHY: Richard K. Walton
Richard K. Walton was born on the farm now known as the Maury Farm, on Sunfish Creek, in Salem township, Monroe county, Ohio (owned then by his father, Jeremiah Walton), on the 2d day of September, A.D. 1836; and at the age of seven years, his father left his residence on the farm and moved his family to the town of Clarington, on the Ohio river, where he engaged in the practice of medicine for six years, during which time Richard was sent to school regularly to such teachers as were then to be be employed under the earlier school regime. At the age of thirteen, Richard was removed by his father back to the farm on which he was born; and from that time he labored on the farm, under the direction of his father, who for many years afterwards continued in his practice, as a successful physician. Richard, however, was sent to school only during the winter terms, which were short, lasting each winter about four months, this way he, by close application, became well versed in the common branches of English learning, and at the age of nineteen procured a certificate to teach the common schools. His first advent into the school room, armed with his first certificate, was in the fall of 1855; wages, thirty dollars per month; length of term, six months. With the proceeds of his first winter's labor in the school room, he, by the consent of his father, attended a school at Woodsfield, Ohio, taught by William Wheeler, the next summer and fall. The former years labor in the same schoolroom was repeated the following year, and he again attended two terms of school at Woodsfield, taught by Professor John Moon, who was an instructor of great ability and learning; after which, on the 15th day of June, A.D. 1858, he was married to Julia A. Conger, the youngest daughter of Elias and Margaret (Atkinson) Conger of Monroe county, Ohio.
He taught school for one year following his marriage, at Cameron, in Adams township, and afterwards in various districts of Adams and other townships of the county, when in 186? (1861 perhaps) he was appointed school examiner by Probate Judge Sinclair.
In the fall of 1862 he was chosen by the board of education of the Clarington special school district principal of the Clarington school; resigned the office of schoool examiner in the spring of 1863, and thereafter removed, at the close of one term of school at Clarington, to his father's farm in Adams township, where he spent the most of his time for two years following, reading law under the instruction of the Hon. William F. Hunter, of Monroe county, Ohio; after which he was again called by the board of education to labor as principal in the Clarington school, at which place he was employed to labor as principal of the school, with the exception of one term, for ten years.
At the time of his marriage, and during all this period, six children were born in his family, four of which, two sons and two daughters, towit: William ?., Jane, Emma V., and James C., are now living.
After having been engaged in the profession of teaching, and meeting with success in this calling for more than twenty years, and being solicitous for a change from the schoolroom, he became a candidate for the office of probate judge, to which he was elected in the fall of 1878, and afterward, in the fall of 1881, was reelected to a second term of said office, of which he is now the incumbent.

An American Tragedy: Stephen Conger
Stephen L. Conger was born in 1839 near the small town of Cameron in Monroe County, Ohio and was the youngest son of Elias and Margaret (Atkinson) Conger. His father, Elias, was born in 1789 in Woodbridge, New Jersey and was brought west as an infant in 1790 by his parents, David (1767-1833) and Sara (Welch) (1769-1844) Conger. David Conger was a newly-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and supervised the building of Fort Lindley near the present town of Prosperity in Washington County, Pennsylvania. This fort was one of about 200 forts erected, in the late 1700's, on the then western frontier for protection of the settlers against the attacks of Indians. David Conger also received a 500 acre grant of land about 3 miles southeast of Fort Lindley and he built a homestead there in 1791, which still is occupied today. The area around the original home, where Elias was raised, was later called Conger Station (now called Plumbsock) and included at one time a gristmill, blacksmith shop, hotel and over 20 residents. It also was a stop on the railroad built between Washington and Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, that went out of business in 1934.Stephen's early years were spent on his father's farm, which consisted of over 200 acres. David A. Conger, born in 1818, was Stephen's older brother, who also lived on the family farm and married Catherine Lippencoat in 1840. Their first two children, Elisha born in 1841 and Charles born in 1843, were playmates of Stephen, when he was growing up. I'm sure Stephen viewed his older brother, David, more as his father and Elias, more as his grandfather, due to the large age differences. In September 1857, Elias received an offer for the bulk of his farm land, over twice the going price per acre, and he sold 180 acres retaining a smaller acreage around his farm buildings. David and Catherine Conger, with their seven children, then moved to Newport Twp., Washington County, Ohio, a few miles southeast of Marietta. The job of farming Elias' reduced acreage fell mainly on 18 year old Stephen and he performed this task for the next four years through the summer of 1861. The Civil War had then broken out and Captain Warren Hollister was recruiting Union Army volunteers in August 1861 for the 36th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Stephen at this time was 22 years of age and was described as being 5 foot 10 1/2 inches in height with brown eyes and black hair. Patriotic feelings were running high and Stephen, along with many friends of his age, enlisted for a term of 3 years. No decision that Stephen ever made in later life would come to affect his life as this particular one.
The 36th Regiment OVI was initially commanded by Col. George Crook who would in later years gain greater fame as an Indian fighter in the West. Stephen was enlisted in Company E, commanded by his recruitment officer, Captain Warren Hollister, and trained at Summerville, West Virginia till about May 1862. In the next five months the 36th fought in five major battles, two of them included the second battle at Antietam, their popular Regimental Commander, Col. Melvin Clark, a prominent Marietta lawyer, was instantly killed (Col. Crook having been previously promoted to General at the Brigade level.)
The 36th was then ordered back to Charleston, West Virginia for a rest period of nearly three months in the fall of 1862. Morale in the regiment at this time was low and probably even lower in Company E since Capt. Hollister was absent for weeks at a time due to illness. Men started to desert and on Jan. 25, 1863 the 36th embarked on river steamers for Nashville. While docked at Louisville, Kentucky on Jan. 31, 1863, Private Stephen Conger deserted from the Union Army and became a man on the run. Make no mistake the charge of desertion is never removed by statue of limitations or general amnesty and remains permanently on a person's military record. Desertion was not treated lightly during the Civil War and many deserters who were caught received long sentences in a military prison and over 144 were executed.
What happened to Stephen L. Conger you might ask? First, he was not caught as far as we know. I doubt if he ever saw his mother or father or hometown of Cameron again, partly from fear of being apprehended there.
In November 1869, Stephen's father, Elias, died at age 80. The following year, in 1870, some of Elias' property was published in the local paper listing his heirs. Stephen, who I believe kept contact by mail with his older brother, David, was listed as unknown ... in the State of Nebraska. A check of the Nebraska Census records for 1870 and 1880 shows no record of a Stephen L. Conger so it is probable he lived there under an assumed name.
This is why I termed the title of this story, "An American Tragedy" in that one rash act could cut a person off from his family, hometown and friends for the rest of his life. Of course, the story could have had a different ending. I note that the three men listed above Stephen on the Company E roster (Coon, Clute, Carleton) who had also enlisted on the same day with Stephen were killed in a battle or died of wounds received in battle. Perhaps if Stephen had not deserted he would have been killed or wounded in one of 19 additional battles that his Regiment was engaged in through to the end of the Civil War. Don't you think that would have been the greater tragedy?
