2635. Elizabeth Powell

Elizabeth Powell

AKA: Elizabeth "Libby" Powell, CFA II, p. 389 and p. 398

MARRIAGE-ERROR: Marriage of Charles Flanigan and Elizabeth "Libby" Powell on 5 Aug 1861, listed in CFA II, p. 398 is wrong. She was never married to Charles Flanigan. Some information from a paid researcher turned out to be in error after it was submitted to Mrs. Leonard. Apparently there was an Eliza Powell who married a James Flanigan and this is recorded in the Putnam Co., MO Marriage Record Index.
(Furnished by Joyce Posey)

MARRIAGE: Elizabeth signed an affadavit that she was married to: (1) George Dodrill, (2) Elias A. Veach, (3) James Bone. (Furnished by Joyce Posey)

RELATIONSHIP: Elizabeth Powell apparently wasn't related to Sarah Jane Powell, who married William and James Dodrill. Sarah Jane Powell was the daughter of Lorinda (Dale) Powell, Conger, Worley, Livingston. Sarah Jane Powell was the mother of Effie Dodrill, who married James Ezra Conger.
(Furnished by Joyce Posey)

CENSUS: 1870, in Putnam Co., MO, Union Twp., 224/224, 23 June 1870
Charles Powell, 56, m. farmer, 1800/1000, OH
Rebecca, 59, f. keeps house, PA
Samuel, 18, m. IA
Elizabeth Veatch, 26, f. keeps house, b. OH
Wesley D., 2, m. IA
Daniel Ryals, 8, m. MO, grandson; Rebecca Ryals, 3, f. IA granddaughter
(Furnished by Joyce Posey)

COMMENT: Evidently Elizabeth Veatch was visiting her parents at the time of the 1870 census. She appears on the 1870 census twice, at her parents house in Union Twp., Putnam Co., MO and at her home with Elias Veatch in Lincoln Twp., Putnam Co., MO. From the 1870 Elias Veatch census record it is evident that Elizabeth was married previously to a Mr. Dodrill and had at least one child, Wesley Dodrill born Abt. 1868 in Iowa. A review of marriage records of Appanoose Co., IA and Putnam Co., MO did not reveal the record of the marriage to Mr. Dodrill. There were persons with that surname living in Appanoose Co., IA.

Catherine Lippincott

Catherine Lippincott

PARENTS: Elisha Lippincott and Mary Ann Duvall

QUESTION: Was the date of birth, 11 Aug 1821 or 6 Sep 1820 in Monroe Co., OH as listed by Robert R. Guilinger? Robert says the date of 11 Aug 1821 is listed in 1833 Monroe County, OH court records and the date 6 Sep 1820 is from Conger Family Bible data. He also states that her year of birth is listed as 1820 on the tombstone at Yankeeburg Cemetery.

The surname is found spelled in several ways: Lippincott, Lippencott and less frequently Lippencoat. Robert Guilinger believes that Lippincott is the correct spelling and notes that there is a town named, Lippincott, located about 8 miles northeast of Waynesburg, Greene Co., PA.

COURT:
Journal #2 - Starts with June term, 1833, Records of the Court of Common Pleas, Monroe Co., OH. Page 1 - Came into court Sarah Lippencott, aged 18 years on the 25th of Feb. 1833, Mary Lippencott, aged 16 years on the 12 of April 1833; Hannah Lippencott aged 14 years on 26 April 1833, and Catherine Lippencott, aged 12 years on the 11th of August 1833, and chose James L. Henthorne as their guardian, Samuel Bracy and Aaron Howell, securities.
(Source: Fedorchak, Monroe County, Ohio Records, Vol. VIII, page 91)
[Note: Calculated birth dates are as follows:
Sarah Lippencott, b. 25 Feb 1815
Mary Lippencott, b. 12 Apr 1817
Hannah Lippencott, b. 26 Apr 1819
Catherine Lippencott, b. 11 Aug 1821

COMMENT-RELATIONSHIP:
Robert Guilinger reports that the parents of the Lippincott sisters were Elisha Lippincott and Mary Ann Duvall. Elisha Lippincott died in 1823 and in 1826 Mary Ann married Christian Hartline and had another family. He stated that Catherine Lippincott had at least 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Perhaps Christian and Mary Ann were having a hard time supporting their growing family and guardianship of the Lippincott children was a step towards resolving the situation.

COURT:
Journal #2 - June term, 1833, Records of the Court of Common Pleas, Monroe Co., OH. Page 15. James Atkinson appointed administrator of the goods and chattels of Wm. Lippencott, deceased. Thomas Hart, Elias Conger, Gilbert McCoy appointed appraisers of personal estate. (Catherine Fedorchak note: This Wm. Lippencott was probably the father of the Lippencott children named on the preceding page.) [Note: Robert Guilinger states: William Lippincott was the older brother of the Lippincott sisters, who had a guardian appointed. William was born, Abt. 1812 and died in 1833. William Lippincott married Keziah Atkinson, daughter of James and Mary (Brown) Atkinson.]

COURT:
Journal 2, June term, 1833, Page 17. Elizabeth Lippincott, guardian of Wm. Lippincott, vs. Christopher Hartline and Mary [Ann], his wife, formerly Mary [Ann] Lippincott, and administrators of Elisha Lippincott (Catherine Fedorchak note: Here Elizabeth Lippincott, widow of Wm. could be suing for the portion of Wm.'s inheritance from Elisha, for her son, Wm. Jr.) [Note: Robert Guilinger's notes indicate that he thinks Elizabeth Lippincott was the aunt of Wm. who was suing for her nephew Wm. Jr. REH]
