OBITUARY: J. Morris Conger - Suicides by Cutting his Throat from Ear to Ear with a RazorWord reached this city early Monday morning [19 Oct 1896] that J. Morris Conger, one of Lincoln townships aged citizens, had taken his own life at his home about two and a-half miles northwest of Howland, [MO] shortly after noon the previous day [18 Oct 1896].
From all the information received from an interview of the family, deceased had been in a fit of despondency for several days. This, however, is brought more impressively upon the minds of the family since he took his life than before. His seven-year old daughter, Margaret E., has been seriously afflicted with diptheria and Sunday just before he left the house he stated to Mrs. Conger that for Maggie to die would be more than he could stand. He then drew his purse from his pocket, handed it to his wife with the remark, "Take this and provide for the children for I am going away." He bade Mrs. Conger good bye and started from the house. The wife followed and made every effort she could to have him remain, but the more she insisted the faster he would step from her. She pursued him as rapidly as she could, but found that her efforts to have him return were in vain. She screamed and cried out for help from the little boys who had gone to the sawmill a short distance south of the residence. The little sons heard her cries and ran as fast as they could to learn what was the trouble. They stated that their first impression was that their little sister was dying. But it was a great or even greater misfortune. They were informed that the father had left and after being told of what had happened, Joseph, the eldest son at home ran to the cornfield half a quarter distant and tracked the parent to a straw stack in the same field where he found him with a gasping wound in his throat and inch or more deep from ear to ear in length, and breathed his last before he could give an alarm. The work was done with a razor, which he used to do his own shaving.
The neighbors were notified of what had taken place after consulting the family called Justice Anderson McKinley to the scene and an inquest was held. The verdict of the jury being that deceased came to his death by his own hands.
Deceased was born in Monroe county, Ohio, June 14, 1843, and came to Missouri in the 60's. He was wedded to Margaret Oden and to this union were born ten children, nine of whom were living at his death, namely, Mary Wellman and Lizzie Norman of Adair County, MO; Stephen Conger of Rooks Co., Kansas; John Conger of Keokuk, Iowa; Ezra, Joseph, Charles, Sherman and Margaret Conger of this county. The mother of these children died several years ago and later he married Emily Powell, who survives him.
Deceased was a member of the ? Christian Church and served his county faithfully and well for three years in the late war.
The funeral took place yesterday, [20 Oct 1896], the remains being taken to the Mendota cemetery.
