OBITUARY:
James Conger, son of Stephen and Mary (Piatt) Conger. The subject of this sketch was born in Monroe Co., Ohio, Feb. 17, 1820, and died Jan. 25, 1911 at the home of his son, Isaac Conger, near Codell, [Rooks Co.], Kansas. At the time of his death he was 91 years of age. In July 1843 he married to Elizabeth Lowe, with whom he was permitted to live in congenial companionship for nearly 68 years. In 1873 they came to Jewell county, Kansas, and five years later to Rooks county, where they have made their residence during the greater part of the time since. To them were born 12 children, 10 of whom, with the aged wife, survive him. All, but four, were present at the hour of his death.
Besides his family he had 46 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. His mind was clear to the last, and he had quite rugged health for a man of his age until about three weeks before his death. At that time he fell, hurting himself badly. From that time he failed rapidly until the close of life came about 1 o'clock on the date mentioned above. Every effort was made by friends and family that his life might be prolonged. But it was evident that they soon must bid him good-bye.
He was much respected as a citizen and neighbor, and friend. He was faithful and loyal in his devotion to this family, and they loved him, and cherished his presence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 17, from the home of M.D. Ross, Pastor of the Methodist Church, and the body interred in the neighborhood cemetery. (Note: His wife, Elizabeth, died one month later.)
Isaac Conger was a great stock buyer and shipper. Jane lived at Superior, Neb., Melvina at Blair and Florence at Natoma. Jock was "a soldier in Iowa," Elias and Sherman lived in Ollie (Olin?) Iowa, Addie at Mankato, Kans., William at Fairfield, IA and Rebecca at Sigourney, Iowa.

Elizabeth LoweNAME-CONFLICT: Elizabeth Low in her obituary.
CHURCH_AFFILIATION: Member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
OBITUARY: Obituary of Mrs. James Conger
Elizabeth Low was born in Bellemont [Belmont] county, Ohio, November 22nd 1826. In 1843, she was married to James Conger. They came to Jewell county in 1873 and five years later to Rooks county, [KS]. She passed away February 21st, 1911, being past 85 years of age.It is seldom indeed that people are permitted to live together in companionship so long a time as did Grandpa and Grandma Conger. And an unusual occurance when their lives drew to a close so nearly the same time. For some years they have been making their home among their children. Last summer they came to live with their son Isaac near Codell, [KS].
Although grandpa was past 90 and his companion 85, it seemed they had strength for some years yet. But on account of a fall some weeks ago grandpa began to decline and passed away on January 25th. Grandma though ill at the time seemed to improve for a while, but became worse and partially paralyzed and passed away on February 21st, surviving her companion less than one month. Had they lived until July they would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversay.
To them were given twelve children. The ten now living are: Mrs. Jane Caster, Superior, Nebraska; Jack Conger, Soldier, Iowa; Mrs. Adda Cline, Mankato, Kansas; Elias and Sherman Conger, Ollie, Iowa; Mrs. Mella Lemon, Blair, Nebraska; Mrs. Florence Clair, Natoma, Kansas; Wm. Conger, Fairfield, Iowa; Isaac Conger, Codell and Mrs. Rebecca Brogg, Sigourney, Iowa.
Besides their own family they left 46 grandchildren, 88 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
She became a Christian and united with the Methodist Episcopal church when but about seventeen years and has lived a consistant Christian throughout her life. And her closing hours were hours of peace. To measure the life, one must estimate the worth of a Christian mother, true and loyal to her family, faithful to the Master and a friend to all.
The funeral services were conducted from the home February 22, by M.D. Ross pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, assisted by Rev. Lundey of Natoma and the body was laid to rest in the neighborhood cemetery.
Her course in life has been finished,
Her labors on earth have been blessed,
She received her reward life eternal
And now is enjoying sweet rest.

COMMENT:
There was a question about whether Harry Brown Conger was the son of David Conger, b. 1861. He was David's brother. He was listed as the son of Enos Conger, b. 1838, in the 1880 census. He probably went to live with his brother, David, after the death of his mother. In 1900 Harry was living with Bert Cahail and his wife, Mabel E. (she was David's daughter). Harry was identified as brother-in-law of Bert.
