Mary Conger

PARENTS: David S. Conger and Rebecca Sharp

EMIGRATION:
It appears that Mary Conger Croel's parents [David S. and Rebecca Sharp Conger] preceded her to Iowa and settled in Monroe County, Iowa. Her uncle, Elias Gregory Conger, b. 1806, had settled in Appanoose county, Iowa.

A year after the death of her husband [in July 1853], Mary Conger Croel sold the land [in Indiana] and with her nine children (the youngest born 4 months after Hiram's death) emigrated to Monroe county, Iowa in a covered wagon with her son-in-law, Omer Palmer, and her brother, Edward, to assist her on the journey. She settled at Bluff Creek Township, [Monroe Co., IA] where her children grew to maturity.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 720 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

BIOGRAPHY:
Mary bought 160 acres of land at $1.25 per acre and cleared it with oxen. She deeded an acre of land on the corner for a Methodist Church. Across the road was a grocery store, cheese factory and school. In later years, her son Wilber, attended the store and once a week drove to Oskaloosa for the mail. This little community was known as "Bluff Creek," in the township of the same name. This was near the prosperous town of Buxton, a mining town of about 5,000 people. For many years the only remnants of the town were the abandoned railroad tracks and the rebuilt schoolhouse which was razed in 1963.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 720 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

Census: 1860, Monroe Co., IA

LAND:
The Monroe County, Iowa census of 1860 revealed that Mary Crowel had 60 acres of improved land, 140 acres unimproved with cash value of $2,500, implements worth $750, also 2 horses, 1 milk cow, 2 oxen, 8 sheep, 5 swine valued at $160, 35 bu wheat, 300 bu corn, 48 lbs wool, 200 lbs butter, 8 tons of hay, 30 gal molasses, value of animals slaughtered, $50.

In 1870 her real estate was valued at $6,300 and personal property at $1,580.

Census: 1880, Las Vegas, NM
At the age of 66, Mary (Conger) Crowell was shown in the Las Vegas, New Mexico census, visiting her daughter, Electa Jane Sutfin, accompanied by her son, Wilber Fish Crowell.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 720 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

LAND: Mary willed 40 acres a piece to her sons, Wilber and Hiram, and the remaining land was divided equally among the other children. David (D.G.) acquired his 80 acres by buying and trading with others -- in one instance, giving a sewing machine to one of his sisters for her land. Recipient of the 40 separate acres of timber land is not known.

Hiram S. Crowell

(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 719 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

BIOGRAPHY:
Hiram Croel seemed to prefer spelling his name CROEL, as shown by a letter he wrote in 1847. However, on his property deed he spelled it CROWEL on one page and CROEL on another.

Hiram was a cooper by trade and he worked in a shop on his home place until his death in 1853.

According to his obituary, Hiram, "came with his parents to the West when but a child of 9. At the age of 20 he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and a few months later he experienced religion." Also, "After his physician had informed him that he must soon die, he called his family around him, he gave them his last counsel and advice, solemnly charging each of them to meet him in heaven; and when he could no longer articulate, he conversed by signs with his deaf and dumb brother-in-law (Elias Milton Conger, b. 1816) about his prospect of soon getting to heaven."

1846
June 10-- The Dearborn volunteers started from Lawrence-burgh,
Indiana, on the S.B. Pike No. 7. Landed at Louisville, KY the same
evening.

June 11-- Cross the river next morning to North Albany, Ind. The
Rendevous for the Indian[a] Troops.

June 18-- Mustered into the service of the United States for the term of
12 months. So much for the start. We rather took the shine of the other
companies--at least the North Albany girls said so.

June 25-- This day the Election of Officers for the three regiments took
place. The election for the 3rd Regiment resulted as follows: Lane,
Colonel, McCarty, Lt. Colonel, and Gorman, Major.

1847
Feb 22-- The long roll beat, and we sprang to arms to meet Santa Anna,
who was advancing with 21,000 men, and we did meet him and gave him a
hearty welcome.

Feb 23-- Early in the morning the strife recommenced, and the greatest
victory of America was won this day. The Mexicans numbered 21,000 and
the Americans about 4,500.

RECOLLECTIONS: Electa Jane Crowell Sutfin (daughter of Mary Conger Crowell) spoke of her uncle as follows: "When visiting at Madison, Indiana, sometimes my uncle John would take me with his wife and baby out in a skiff to ride the waves of the big steamboats. Sometimes we would be eight or ten feet up -- and then down to the level -- then up again. My, I wonder how I ever did such a thing! Sure thought it fine fun then."
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 318 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

BIOGRAPHY: The family records state that John died at the Soldier's Home at Waupaca, Wis. and Charles L. Conger records say Marshalltown, [IA]. Prior to going to the Soldier's Home he lived with his son, Robert, and was remembered as "a fine looking aristocratic old gentleman." John must have removed back to Manchester, [IN], because at one time he was the sheriff.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Excerpts from letters written by Cora Conger Henry to Charles L. Conger, dated July 1911: "Soon I will write and give you what data I have regard to my father's sisters and brothers, but enclosed you find a book of the beginning and ending of the Mexican War, which my father was a member of, from 1846 to 1848, before father was married.

Now you will see in this little old book where the lead pencil begins, the death of his brother, David Conger. I have several letters from his father and sisters and brothers while he was in the Mexican War, but not place mentions their deaths.

One of his sisters, Hannah Jane Conger, died in 1854. I will find out for certain through some old letters that were sent to my father when he was in the Mexican War. Please send the letters and book back, as I think when I die I will have them placed in my coffin or confined to the four winds." (See data for John Spencer Conger)

My cousins are scattered everywhere and they are so long in answering my letters. I will write again to them, and a cousin Edward Conger in Phoenix, Ariz. His father, Edward Conger, was my father's youngest brother, and the youngest of David Conger's children. He died somewhere about 1870, I think, or about 1868. ..."

He usually walked to Albia (about 15 miles) for supplies, and would carry the flour on his shoulder. The only time he was ever known to use a swear word was when he stumbled over a piece of wire, frozen in the ground.
