John Conger enlisted as 3rd Sgt. Co. A, Regt. Iowa Infantry. He was described as: age 24, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion dark, eyes black, hair black, occupation farmer. He enlisted at Eldora.He was promoted to 2nd Sgt. on 17 Apr 1863.
In action at Shiloh, TN on 6 Apr 1862; Corinth, MS wounded 3 Oct 1862; skirmish before Jackson, MS 14 May 1863. In action at Vicksburg from May 19 to June 22, 1863; also at Jackson, MS from 10 Jul to 17 Jul 1863; also at Brandon, MS July 19.
He was promoted to Sgt. on 1 Jul 1863; enlisted as a Vet Vol 25 Dec 1863. He was in action at Moush White River 22 Jun 1864. In action at Nashville, TN on the 15 & 16th of Dec 1864. Promoted to 1st Sgt on 16 Jan 1865. While in Corinth, MS he was wounded in the right thigh and spent some time in the hospital. He was promoted from 1st Sgt. to 1st Lieut. on 16 Jan 1864 and to Capt. on 18 Feb 1865. While in the service as a Vet Vol he spent some time recruiting in Iowa. He was honorably discharged as a Captain on 20 Jan 1866.
