2174. Simeon Washington Conger

Simeon Washington Conger

PARENTS: Jonas Conger and Parthena Pelfrey

QUESTION: Were Simeon and his wife really both born on 12 September?

RECOLLECTIONS-RESEARCHER:
The following conclusions concerning the birth, parentage and life of Simeon Washington Conger are based upon the research and trip of my mother, Beulah (Conger) Frehner and myself (Connie (Frehner) Money) to the states of Alabama, Georgia and others.

Records handed down through the family have always shown Simeon Washington (S.W.) to have been born, 12 Sep 1832. His father is said to have been, Jonas; his mother's name was not known. He supposedly had two brothers, Benjamin and Zachariah, and a sister, Annie.

It is our conclusion that S.W. was not born in 1832, but about 1820 and was considerably older than his wife, Eliza Ann McKinney, who supposedly was born 12 Sep 1839. We base our conclusions on the following items of information, which are not actual proof, but we feel offer enough evidence to warrant our conclusions.

He is listed on the 1848, 1849, and 1851 tax digests for Cobb county, Georgia. We had this information for some time, but what we didn't know was that the tax digests were for a "poll" tax. The poll tax was paid when an individual voted and a man had to be 21 to vote in the state of Georgia. It wasn't until 1943 that 18 year olds were allowed to vote. If this was true, then S.W. had to have been born no later than 1827 if he paid a poll tax in 1848 and could as well have been born prior to 1827.

It disturbed us that Simeon Washington [Conger] was not found on the 1850 US Census of Cobb county, Georgia, but I personally feel he was somehow missed. His son, William Jonas, was born in Georgia in 1858 and S.W. enlisted in Alabama in 1861.

The official US Census record of Randolph county, Alabama, for the year 1870, which we examined in the National Archives in Washington, DC gave his age as 50. This would indicate he was born, about 1820.

We conclude that Simeon Washington (Conger) was born around 1820 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. Sometime between 1820 and 1824 his family moved to Georgia, presumably near an area called Suwanne. It's possible they were Methodist, because [the parents of Simeon] Jonas Conger and Parthena Pelfry were married by a Methodist preacher named Richard Burdyne, on 24 Dec 1816 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. However, other family members were Baptist.

Simeon left Georgia between 1858 and 1860. He most likely went to Randolph county, Alabama, because he enlisted as a Private in the 125th Alabama Volunteer Infantry, Co. F, on 19 Oct 1861, at Wesobulga, Randolph, Alabama. The name of the town, Wesobulga, has since been changed to Cragford, but the creek near there is still called, Wesobulga Creek and in elections the Cragford area is still called, Wesobulga Beat.

While Simeon was in the army he received $11 a month pay. He was sick a good deal of the time. He complained of rheumatism and was in the 1st Mississippi Confederate States Army Hospital at Oxford, Mississippi. He was there at least through April of 1862. In November 1862, he was sick at Saltillo, Miss. In Sep. and Oct. of 1863 he apparently went home because he is listed as a possible deserter from the hospital. However, he was back with the army on 24 Nov 1863 to pick up clothing.

All of the known papers available show him signing his name with an "X".

Family records say that Simeon Washington [Conger] died at Elaxander, Alabama, and was buried in Sandy Level Cemetery. We feel that Elaxander is in reality, "Alexander." We visted the "Sunny" Level Cemetery, near Alexander. There were no Conger headstones, but [there were] many many unmarked graves. There is another Alexandira, not far from Linesville.

Judging from the little bit of information we have concerning Simeon Washington Conger, I feel that he must have been very poor, most likely uneducated, but with a sense of responsibility to perform his duties as a good citizen by voting and by serving in the Confederate Army, although he was not a slave holder himself. [Note: These two researchers do not cite sources for their information. They reach a number of conclusions that may or may not be possible to prove. REH]

RECOLLECTIONS: Another family notation says he was a carpenter and contractor, and painter. He was very quiet and reserved; seldom talked unless asked questions. He was well thought of by his neighbors. He was quite religious and tried to teach his children the same. He did this by example more than by precept.

SPOUSE: Zachariah Conger was the 2nd spouse of Mrs. Pamela (Davenport) Parks.

DEATH: Died of cancer of the ear and face, at the home of his son, Joseph Jonas Conger. He had been hit with a mini-ball during the war, which probably caused the cancer. (CFA I, p. 556)

RECOLLECTIONS: Researcher Willa Dean (Beall) Eaves wrote, "From all the descendants of Zacharia Conger I have talked with, I keep hearing the story of how the Congers owned the land which is now the prime area of downtown Atlanta, [GA], on which the largest bank and the Henry Grady Hospital sit."

"The Gwinett county courthouse was burned in 1871 and through some sort of fraud and no records of proof, the Congers lost the land.

My great uncle says my grandfather, (Jonas Joseph Conger) was born on that very land. Boundaries have changed so much, and I believe that section has now become Fulton county."
