BIOGRAPHY: CONGER, Harmon Sweatland, 1816-1882CONGER, Harmon Sweatland, a Representative from New York; born in Freeport, Cortland County, N.Y., April 9, 1816; attended the local academy at Cortland in 1833; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice in Cortland, N.Y.; editor and owner of the Cortland County Whig 1840-1845; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1851); resumed the practice of law in Cortland, N.Y.; moved to Janesville, Wis., in 1855 and continued the practice of law; elected judge of the circuit court in 1870; reelected in 1877 and served until his death in Janesville, Rock County, Wis., October 22, 1882; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY:
At the age of 19, Harmon Sweetland Conger engaged in the study of law, in Cortland county, New York. While occupied with this study he purchased the Cortland County Whig and edited it for five years. At that time the period of study before being admitted to the bar was seven years. Three years of actual practice was required before one could be admitted as counselor at law, and then only upon another examination. In 1846, he was nominated by the Whig Party and elected to Congress as a Whig.He was a member of the House of Representatives at Washington, DC, during the 30th and 31st terms of Congress, representing Cortland County, New York.
In 1854, he retired from political life, and practiced law for a time in Cortland, New York.
In 1855, he moved to Janesville, Wisconsin, where he also practiced law. In 1870, he was nominated and elected Judge of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin, and re-elected in 1876.
He died in 1882 while discharging his official duties.

BIOGRAPHY:
Joseph P. Conger removed from Bureau county, Illinois to some place in Nebraska; from there to Colorado and later back to Adams county, Nebraska, where he died at the home of his son, Damon, at Kenesaw.Iva (Conger) Wessman recalled that her grandfather, Joseph, lived with her parents in Prosser, Nebraska and died at the age of 94. The family travelled from Illinois to Nebraska in a covered wagon. Joseph was employed as a mechanic at the round house for the railroad before moving to Colorado in 1906, where he became a rancher.
