OBITUARY: Conger, Jon Charles, 65, 12/5/1945-1/10/2011
Jon Conger, devoted and loving husband and father, died Jan. 10, 2011, in Beaverton, [OR] after battling Parkinson's disease for 19 years.

Born in Hood River to Maurice and Arletha Meyers Conger, Jon graduated from Centennial High School in Gresham in 1963 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry, post-graduate degree in business, and a master's degree in business administration from Portland State University.

Jon enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1968 and served in Vietnam. Later, he served 23 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a captain in 1993.

Jon married Bonnie Gilstrap in 1977. They were blessed with a son, David Conger, in 1982.

Jon enjoyed sharing his love of photography, model railroading, woodworking, computers, movies, and music with his son. His knowledge of trivia and historical facts amazed everyone. He had a subtle sense of humor hiding behind his quiet exterior. Jon worked for Cromwell Formal Wear in Portland for 12 years and for Georgia Pacific Corp. for 22 years. He managed GP's accounting and billing department when he retired for medical reasons in 2002.

He also served on the City of Beaverton's budget committee, audit committee, and Committee for Citizen Involvement, and was vice chair of the Greenway Neighborhood Association. A member of Murray Hills Christian Church since 1988, he was a deacon for six years and a member of the board of trustees.

After years of home care for Parkinson's disease, Jon spent the last 27 months of his life at Christiana's Adult Foster Home in Beaverton. The family deeply appreciates the compassionate care given by Georgeta Ivers and her caregivers.

Jon is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Beaverton; son and daughter-in-law, David and Lindsay Conger of Issaquah, Wash.; brother, Maurice Varda Conger of St. Helens; sister, Karen Shepherd of Molalla; nephews, Joshua Shepherd and Jason Conger; and niece, Lindsey Conger Lawson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Blaine Martz.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Murray Hills Christian Church. Private burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jon's memory to Murray Hills Christian Church, 15050 S.W. Weir Road, Beaverton, OR 97007 or Parkinson's Resources of Oregon, 3975 Mercantile Dr., Suite 154, Lake Oswego, OR 97035. Arrangements by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.
