Lee Roger CongerMILITARY: Lee Roger Conger joined the National Guard, 5 Sep 1940 and was sworn into the Army 24 Feb 1941, as a member of the 43rd Division, 172nd Infantry, Co. H. In March 1941 the outfit went to Camp Blanding, Florida, and basic training was given at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and Fort Ord, California.
They went overseas in Oct. 1942 and saw front line action during the New Guinea and Munda Campaigns, and also Luzon, Philippines.
Lee, a Corporal, was one of 5,000 mostly Vermont soldiers on the ship, Calvin Coolidge, on the way to Guadalcanal in the South Pacific, when they hit a mine off the coast of New Hebrides. The ship sank but only three lives were lost.
He was discharged at Fort Devens, [MA] on 27 Jul 1945.
