RECOLLECTIONS:
Darlene Elaine (Cowell) Shipley. I lived my younger years in McCloud, CA. As a
young girl I learned to tap dance, ballet and to do acrobats. We returned to
Colorado in the early 1950's. I attended two years of high school at Gunnison,
Colorado. Then we moved to Delta Colorado where I graduated in 1958. In the
fall of 1958 I went to Denver to go to Parks Business College. Upon
completition I returned to Delta but was unable to find work so my girl friend
and I joined the US Marine Corps. I went through boot camp at Parris Island,
SC. While home on boot camp leave I met and married my husband Tom Shipley on
June 21, 1959 at Delta Co. I returned to SC and worked in a Civil Service
office until my discharge in March of 1960.

We own our home and 12 acres. I do crafts of all kinds, sewing, and gardening.
I have made over 50 porcelain dolls from start to finish. I design their
clothes for the most part. I have won two blue ribbons but have only entered
for judging twice. Tom and I both like to travel even though we don't get to
much. We fish a great deal. We have a motorhome and we each have a 4 wheeler.

We have a pond that we grow all kinds of water plants especially water lilies
and have all sizes of Gold Fish, this is one of our delights. We also have 11
peacocks, they are such beautiful birds.

We enjoy our children and grandchildren.

Tom and I will have been married 43 years in June of 2002.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Our oldest son, Roger Dean Shipley, was born Aug 10, 1960 at Gunnison, Colorado. We then moved to Nucla, Colorado where Tom worked in the uranium mines, after his mine caved in, we decided to return to the military, Tom had been in the Marine Corps before I married him. He rejoined the US Army and was sent to Maine. Shortly, I followed and there our second son, William Harrison, was born Jan 28, 1962 at Van Buren, Maine. In January 1963 we transferred to Anchorage, Alaska, where, on June 18, 1964, our first daughter, Darla Shawn, was born. We lived in Alaska for 5 years. Next, we lived on Sandy Hook, NJ for three and one half years. Then we moved to Utah for one year. When Tom went overseas to Korea, I returned to Colorado. When he returned we moved to Topsfield, Mass. We were there for 6 months, then transferred to Fort Carson, Colorado where our second daughter, Letitia Elaine, was born on Jan 22, 1975. Tom was then transferred to Germany so I moved to Olathe, Colorado in Nov 1975. The older kids were going into high school so we remained here.

While moving in the military I worked as a cook or waitress in both NCO and Officer Clubs. When Tom was in Germany I worked at Russell Stover Candies for 3 1/2 years then worked for my dad at the bowling alley for 15 years. I gave up working in 1993 because I am almost deaf and it made it very hard to work in public.

Tom retired from the Army in Sept 1979. After retiring Tom milked cows for Webbs Dairy here in Olathe for 5 years. Then he went to work for Louisiana Pacific, where they make waferwood. He ran heavy equipment, his main job was to unload logs off the logging trucks. He worked there over 13 years. He left LP in May of 2000. As of Feb 2002 he works part time construction running heavy equipment. Basically retired now, he loves to hunt and fish.
