BIOGRAPHY: David Louis Conger left Indiana in 1938 and went to California where he worked as a hod0-carrier and laborer for Henry Doelger, a home builder in San Francisco. In 1939 he entered Purdue University and studied Chemical Engineering.

In December 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. At the age of 21 he was assigned to the Training Command as a Twin-Engine Instructor. As a member of the 8th Air Force he led his Squadron over Europe on "D-Day." He completed 30 combat missions as a Lead Pilot in B-17's and B-24's and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters.

He returned to Reserve status in 1945 as a Major. In 1949 he was the first Reserve pilot to fly jets in the United States and served as Commanding Officer of the 52nd Jet Fighter Squadron - Reserve, at Hamilton Field.

In 1945 he entered the Real Estate business and in October 1946 opened his own office at 524 Tennessee Street, Vallejo, CA.

In 1953 he earned the Senior Member designation (SRA) of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers. In 1956, he was awarded the MAI designation of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. He served seven years on the Admissions Committee of the Northern California Chapter.

In 1958 Dave was president of the Solano Board of Realtors. He has been extremely active in Real Estate Education for 19 years and enjoys the reputation among his fellow realtors as one of the most brilliant minds in organized real estate. He has taught classes at the Vallejo Evening College, Solano College and University of California. Since 1953 he has served the California Real Estate Association in every educational capacity.

He has written many articles and booklets on Real Estate. His dedication to the Real Estate profession has made him a much sought after lecturer. He has instructed in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Oregron, Texas, Washington and for the Real Estate School at Sea aboard the S.S. Lurline to Hawaii. In 1967, he was awarded the GRI Certificate No. 3 in California.

Dave is an Office Management Consultant for dozens of real estate offices throughout California and the United States. His specialty is "How to Manage a Real Estate Office Successfully."

His appraisal partnership, Conger and Fisk, has appraised properties for over 40 national corporations under their Corporate Transfer Program. In addition, the partners completed the largest single appraisal assignment for the U.S. Navy in Northern California -- Port Chicago, an entire city of 4,000 people. In 1969, he and his partner, Les Fisk, completed an appraisal of 1,100 parcels for the federal government on the island of Guam in the Pacific.

He is a partner and owner of seven real estate firms in Vallejo, Concord, Fairfield and Napa, California. His firm has sold over 5,000 properties with a gross sales price of $70,000,000. Currently his brokerage firm does $10,000,000 annually. (Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 116 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

BIOGRAPHY: An Integral Part of Vallejo, [CA] - [Dave] Conger has seen the town's history. by Gene Silverman, Times-Herald Staff Writer.

A man instrumental in the real estate appraisal of downtown Vallejo, [CA] "when they got rid of the gambling, etc.," also did the appraisal of Guam after a devastating typhoon. "There is a Luther Gibson Parkway on Guam," he points out, noting the Vallejo connection there.

He brought the Wells Fargo bank to Vallejo, having rented the office building to them, persuading them to locate at Tennessee and Tuolmne streets.

He has brokered about 6,000 houses in Vallejo.

He located the site for Sutter-Solano Hospital and the school site for Armijo High School in Fairfield and 13 land parcels for the Air Base Parkway that leads into Travis Air Force Base. He has been involved as a mover and shaker in the widening of Interstate 80 from the Carquinez Bridge to the Yolo Causeway, also the Georgia Street and Redwood Street overcrossings.

"We did studies for Alcatraz," he notes, adding that he has had great partners and couldn't have done it without them, including Jack Hamilton in Napa and John Simmons, remaining associated with them, and the late Les Fisk.

With all that and a lot more under his professional belt, he still considers himself primarily an educator.

Dave Conger is certainly a Realtor, "but I couldn't stand to be in real estate without knowing values," he says. So he learned appraisal and then taught courses at the University of Southern California. He also taught in Nevada, Idaho, Florida and (ready?) South Africa. He literally wrote the teaching manual on real estate appraisal. "I wanted to teach the instructors because that's what I did in combat," Conger says. He has trained five past presidents of the Solano Board of Realtors.

A Major in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was known as "Mother Conger" for his concern for and devotion to the men whom he led. "We were like-minded people," he says. "There's nothing more interdependent than a 10-man bomber crew."

Conger hitch-hiked to California from Indiana when he was 17 years old. He opened his Vallejo office in 1946. "It's been a great community. It's well located. With a plane, I can be anywhere in four hours," he says. He means his own plane, you understand. A plane he flies himself. He has even flown prospective customers to Alaska to look at properties.

As a financial consultant, he has helped many people live a comfortable life. "He has been willing to give advice through his experience, knowledge, percaption [sic] and wisdom," says Phyliss Grove. "I'm one of the lucky ones who has had the benefit of all this. And it's not just financial advice but help in growing, taking control of my life."

As his assistant, Holly West, says, "He is dedicated to teaching. That's so others will become informed consumers. You'll know more than you did when your walked through his door."

John Simmons, of Conger and Simmons Appraisal, who has been with Conger for 20 years, points out, "Dave has been generously giving freely of his time and expertise, often charging a minimum fee or no fee at all." "Dave taught me that what is needed is a willing buyer and a willing seller and a reasonalbe time. But between those words is the wealth of expertise and trainging it takes to define those words. He is as much an educator as a Realtor. As West says, "He certainly has made a difference in this town." (Source: Undated article, republished in Conger Confab, March 2000, p. 1)
