On active duty he was a Sgt. as long as his daughter, Trish Archer, remembers. In Vietnam he was a Chief Warrant II. That rank was discontinued, but he was allowed to keep it. He received the Purple Heart.

A 21-year-old Maumee [OH] soldier had a narrow escape in North Korea recently when Chinese guerrillas set fire to the truck in which he was hiding.He is Pfc. John (Jack) Hoag, son of Mrs. Grace S. Hoag, 100 North Masters Ct., attached to the 35th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. He has been recommended for the Bronze Star.
Routed By Shells
In a letter to his mother, Private Hoag said he was on a detail to repair a culvert, but the group had to scurry back to their lines when enemy mortar shells began dropping about them. Two men were wounded.
Later the detail made another effort in the night to fix the culvert so there outfit could advance. Again, just as they began to work, mortar fire got their range. The detail took to cover in various directions. Some jumped in trucks, in which they had arrived and sped away.
Private Hoag was on of the detail who was left behind. He took cover in one of three trucks the U.S. soldiers had to abandon in their haste to escape.
Guerrillas Appear
Almost immediately a band of Chinese guerrills appeared and began setting fire to the trucks. Private Hoag could not jump out for fear of being shot, he related.
Finally, the Communists left and so did the Maumee soldier who had been curled up between some sandbags and thus escaped being burned.
Private Hoag, who holds the Combat Infantryman's Badge has been in the army two years. He is a graduate of Maumee High School.
