"Pete" was bitten by the "genealogy bug" and never rested until the missing link was found to tie his line into John Belconger. Acting on a hunch over the name "Aaron" in the family, Maxine Leonard, guided Pete into searching for Aaron, 1812, whose brothers had settled in Washington county, Iowa, and their families were accounted for. Pete's great-grandfather, William J. Conger, simply "appeared" there.On 6 Nov 1969, Pete wrote, "William J.'s discharge lists his birthplace as Washington county, New York. The 1860 census says he came from Ohio, so Ohio was only a stopover, I guess. We have the complete description of the two quarter sections that Aaron homesteaded in Washington county, Iowa. Gosh! They were right behind the Indians!
"I hope to get to Washington county and check some more records. Also I would like to stand on the very place that Aaron homesteaded. Sound crazy? We have the legal descriptions so I can find it. After Aaron's death William and John farmed the place for awhile.
"Someday I am going the whole route back to Woodbridge and John Conger (Primus). Should be able to drive in two weeks what took 300 and some years in the beginning."
When asked why he was called "Pete," he wrote, "My nickname was really used by my father just to tease me at first. We had an old junk man come by the neighborhood with the name of "Peter Rybar." The Pete came from this. I also felt my real name, Milton, sounded so sissified."
