Cincinnati, [Iowa] farmer Wayne Wright can rest easy at nights, even if he can't be at home where he'd like to be.Wright is recovering in a Unionville, MO hospital from a ruptured appendix he suffered May 24, [1986]. At the time of the incident, Wright's corn and soybean fields were empty, awaiting seed.
When friends and neighbors heard about the situation, they mobilized.
Lloyd Cowan needed only one day to collect volunteers, of which there was no shortage, and on Tuesday the group gathered at Wright's home, scattered to various fields in the Cincinnati area, and put his crop in the ground.
It was an example of how people in this part of the world stick together, said Fred Hatfield, one of the volunteers.
"Around here we're all neighbors. When somebody's down, everybody pulls together to help out," Hatfield said.
In all, 24 persons contributed to the effort, either directly or indirectly, and several others offered assistance but were told they weren't needed, said Cowan.
"It was no trouble getting people to help," Cowan said. "We even had to turn some (people) down because we had everything set up and we just couldn't use them."
The group planted 52 acres of corn on Sunday and finished up Wright's planting Tuesday by seeding 215 acres of soybeans. Volunteers included Lloyd Cowan, Lyle Cowan, Larry Cowan, Garry Cowan, Wade Cowan, Larry Drake, Don McCannon, Trent Mobley, Boby Logsdon, Ron Snider, Elvin Thomasson, Larry Ewing, Fred Hatfield, Cleo Webber, Tom Klinger, Greg Lowe, Bill Irelan, Gene Bullard, and John McCarthy; Dick McClure and Harold Dudley, who took care of Wright's cattle; and Glen Morrow, Carl Hawkins and Glen Hawkins, who each offered to share their equipment.
Mary Wright, Wayne's wife, said many of the volunteers dropped what they were doing to aid their friend.
"Some of these guys don't have their own crops in," she said. "We sure feel like we have some kind neighbors and friends."
Wright has helped others in similar circumstances in the past, the volunteers said, and they welcomed an opportunity to return the favor.
"Wayne is just like his daddy -- he makes friends and keeps friends," Hatfield said.
Relatives aren't sure when Wright will be released from the hospital, but they're not worried. "The farm is in good hands," said Mrs. Wright.
