Poems Written by Harry Allen Halliwell

"Odessa, Nebraska"

The merchants of our town
Are always on the climb,
And for their benefit
I give this little rhyme.

For coal and grocery needs
Patronize our local store
Low prices and good quality
Are established by Pat Moore.

Stop and chat with Cass!
But before you go,
Be sure the tank is filled
With Firechief Texaco.

If you, a shave or haircut
or wish advice so free,
Cnady, tobacco, or play some pool,
Come in and see Charlie.

For pump or irrigation work
To save your land from waste.
Economize with Conoco
And stop awhile with Case.

As for Blacksmith jobs,
Welding or regulating clocks,
Nothing is too large or too small
For repair by Hedger Fox.

At the railway station,
We find Mr. Rydberg there.
He will sell you a ticket
To Kearney or the world's fair.

Now don't forget the Friday night dances
Held down in the old town hall.
Also the thrilling games
Of twilight kitten ball.

Let's make our town a white spot
And overbridge the gap.
Let's make elaborate plans
To place Odessa on the map.

"A Soldier"

[Note: This poem, about a statue in their town they wanted to tear down for a road, was printed in the paper. As a result of this poem the statue stood and the road went around the statue.]

In the midst of our fair city
A stately monument rears
Its head above the crowd--
The memory of past years.
Fate rumors ill news bring,
Which bear cause to mark,
This statue must be moved,
To cemetery or to park.

'A great menace to traffic'
Many are quoted to say
'It's a hindrance to tourist,
Passing day by day'.

But to me it seems,
A sentinel at his beat.
Challenging each speeding traveler
Warning pedestrians on the street.

Here, let it stand forever!
Guardian of the way.
Until this beauty spot
Crumbles to ruin and decay.

"Another by Halliwell"

The Indians are gone,
So is the pioneer.
The homesteader passed away.
Dead is the forty-miner.

The longhorns have run their course.
They've disappeared with the buffalo.
Now, if you desire to glimpse old days,
Go see a wild west show.

No more are seen the cowboys.
Death took the gambling rover.
No longer the open saloon.
The six gun's bark is over.

The hitching rack is removed;
So is the livery stable.
The stage coach is no more,
Now news is carried by cable.

Friends depart as time flies.
Stores have changed their name.
New houses replace the old.
But Kearney remains the same.

"The Farm"

A swift south breeze,
Clouds flying by.
Perfect peace on the farm,
A rainbow in the sky.

A slight movement of the grass,
A rustle of green leaves.
The sound of a creaking windmill,
And the bawling of the beeves.

The clatter of a squirrel.
The bark of a hungry dog.
A cackle of a chicken.
And the squealing of the hog.

Sunshine everywhere....
Everything a charm.
No wonder city people
Move back to the farm.

"A Traveler"

Life is a winding road
Through a foreign land,
Over rugged rock and crag
Where we can scarcely stand.
At each intersection
We see another friend,
Who is content to follow
Until we reach the end.

Where the way is rough
And we meet despair,
Shall we then turn back
When we are almost there?
At the journey's terminal
We enter the Golden Town.
Climb the steps of the tower,
Rest and look down.

"Time"

Tick tock! Tick tock!
Years fly on
Tick tock! Tick tock!
Another moment gone

No wonder the young hate you,
And the old ones love you so;
You steal happiness from some,
Others content, watch it go.

To the happy you are swift
To the sad ever so slow.
Yet not matter what happens
Onward you go.

A life at every tick,
A death at every tock.
You watch a forest fade
And petrify to rock.

You copy this verse
And measure the rhyme.
Oh, immortal creature!
You are time.

"The Harvest"

Solitude breeds sunshine
To the awakening day;
It conquers every grief
And stores it safe away.
From a single grain of hope,
Carried long as loot,
A love has blossomed forth
Into a ruddy fruit.
So plant a pleasant thought
In everything you do;
For the joy you bring to others
Shall return to you.

RESEARCHER: Susan Alcover was interested in genealogy and family history. She shared her information with others. Email: salcover@tampabay.rr.com

RESIDENCES: As of Feb 1972, Tampa, FL

HOBBIES: Susan and Peter Alcover and their daughters love dogs. As of June 1999 they owned four dogs, 3 bichons and one shih tzu. Susan loved to walk and hike and take her camcorder or camera along to capture the "mood" of the places she visits. She liked to read and was interested in tracing the complete family tree to give to her girls in the hope that they will continue to add to it.

OCCUPATION: Senior data entry operator in the Visa/MasterCard Division of Equifax at St. Petersburg, Pinellas Co., FL where she had been working for over 15 years as of June 1999.

RECOLLECTIONS:
My grandfather, Albert Ross Hogue, was the County Historian for Fentress County, TN. As a young man he served in the State House of Representatives. He lived to be 105. After his death, the library dedicated a section to his writings and there is a plaque there honoring him. He wrote an autobiography that contains much genealogical information about his side of the family. I have a copy of it as well as another booklet he wrote on the strange state laws and lawsuits of Tennessee. He also wrote a history of the Cumberland mountains. He was a school teacher and school superintendent, lawyer, and member of the historical society. After he and Josie Abbott Hogue were divorced he lived in Jamestown, TN where he held a life interest in land and home that my parents owned. They later sold it when they retired to Tampa, FL when my Dad retired from the Army. He kept the life interest and lived there until he had to go into a nursing home. I have newspaper clippings about parties given for him for his 101st and 103rd birthdays and his obituary. He retained his awareness and senses up until his death.

Jessie Abbott Hogue lived in Livingston, TN until her death. My mother did not get along with her parents so I did not see this set of grandparents after about age 12 or so. I have fond memories of visiting this Grandmother. She would always give me a jar of home preserved tomatoes with a big spoon and send me outside to play. After wolfing down the tomatoes -- which to this day I can still taste in my mind as being the most delicious ones ever!! -- I would take the spoon and jar and play in the dirt. Try amusing a child in this day and age with a spoon and jar and a pile of dirt and see how long it lasts! I can remember getting water out of the well behind her house. There was a bucket you dropped into the well and then pulled up. There was a ladle spoon to drink the water out of. That was the coldest, best tasting, water I have EVER had. Funny the things you remember.
