QUESTION: Delm Bayley reported that he died on 14 Jul 1890 in Centerville, Appanoose Co., IA. Can anyone cite a source for Centerville as the place of death?

CONFLICT-CEMETERY: Some say she was buried at the Wright Cemetery. Duane L. Jones thinks that the cemetery is Brannon Cemetery. He writes, From the book, Appanoose Co., IA Cemeteries of Sharon Township that I found at the courthouse, there is a picture of the tombstone of, Martha A., wife of William Wright, with the death date of March 28, 1871, age 32y, 2m, 10d. Another picture on the same page #1 is that of J. Wright's tombstone, stating that he died July 14, 1890, age 79y, 1m, 28d.

CEMETERY: The Old Wright Cemetery became the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Twp., Appanoose Co., IA

Margaret Mc Elroy

Margaret McElroy

EMIGRATION: Parents emigrated from Monroe Co., Ohio to Appanoose Co., IA.

REFERENCE: An article on the McElroy family appears in "Monroe County Ohio Families," page 226, submitted by Charles "Tom" Stevens. Much of the article deals with Samuel McElroy, brother of Margaret. Apparently he had returned to Monroe Co., Ohio from Appanoose County, Iowa in order to marry. Shortly after marriage he became ill and died in Nov 1852. It is not clear why Samuel McElroy chose to spent the last 5 weeks of his life living with Stephen and Sarah Randall Henthorn in Washington Twp., Monroe Co., OH. He was most certainly sick and needed someone to care for him. In 1853 Stephen Henthorn submitted a bill for $31.80 for reimbursement of expenses incurred during the care of Samuel McElroy. The bill was found in the estate papers of Samuel McElroy. It was common to bill the estate for care given to a sick person and the bills were usually honored by law as long as costs were reasonable.

Problem: Did she die in Monroe Co., OH or as suggested by Tom Stevens, in Preston, Randolph Co., IL?

On the backside is printed the following, "Jonathan Clark Conger, an early pioneer in Washington County became wealthy buying and selling land. He died in 1904 and bequeated the house to his daughter, Clara (Mrs. C.J. Wilson).

For many years this house was the center of Washington's social life. It is being restored to its former splendor and is considered a showplace of 19th Century living.

The original brick farm house built in 1848, was enlarged after the Civil War by Conger and is not the Museum and headquarters for Washington County Iowa Historical Society.
