2638. Samuel Patterson Conger

Samuel Patterson Conger

PARENTS: Benoni Conger and Catherine Patterson

Problem: Was he born on 1 Jul 1833 in Monroe Co., OH or 3 Jul 1835 in Guernsey Co., OH? Maxine Leonard lists, 3 Jul 1835, Guernsey Co., OH.

CONFLICT: Some say that Samuel P. Conger left home at age 27 and arrived in Colorado in 1860. Joyce Posey says: he was still living in Monroe Co., OH at the home of his father at the time of the 1860 census and he went to Colorado Abt. 1863-1864.

REFERENCE: There is an article about him in "Nederland, A Trip to Cloudland," by Isabel M. Becker, prepared and published by Scott Becker, Ltd., P.O. Box 501, Denver, CO 80201.

BIOGRAPHY:
Samuel P. Conger was born 1 Jul 1883 in Monroe Co., OH to Benoni and Catherine (Patterson) Conger. Benoni was born in 1812 to Elias Darby Conger Sr. b. 1763 and his second wife, Mary Gregory. Elias came to Monroe County from Greene County, PA, about 1813. He was an early settler of Adams Township. Elias died June 1847. Elias and Mar's other children were: Elias Gregory b. 1806 md. Rebecca Patterson; John B. b. 1808 md. Elizabeth Atkinson; Enos b. 1814 md. Ann Strayer (1), Mary Lang (2); and Rebecca b. 1810 md. Charles Powell. Most of the Congers migrated to Appanoose County, Iowa by 1850.

Samuel Conger left Monroe County at age 27, crossing the Great Plains in a covered wagon, arriving in Colorado in 1860. The 1860 Census shows Samuel and wife, Diantha, living at Central City, Colorado. He may have prospected on his own along Chicago Creek or he may have worked at the Chain of Mines, owned by Horace Tabor, to learn all he could about mining.

Boulder, Colorado history credit Sam Conger as the discover of the famous "Caribou" silver mine in 1868. The Caribou was one of the richest silver mines in Colorado mininin history. It was located in a treacherous area. Snow drifts as high as 25 feet blanketed the area in winter. Conger sold his interest in "Caribou" for $500.00 and full ownership of the "Poorman," in the same vicinity. By the late 1870's, Sam also sold all interest in the "Poorman."

Sam and Diantha both appear on the 1870 census.

Caribous Camp was platted in 1870 and within months over 3,000 people lived there. The camp produced more than a half million dollars in gold and silver in 1875. The camp started fading in the 1880's. Then the silver panic struck in 1893. The Caribou never fully recovered. Then a fire in 1900 virtually wiped Caribou Camp off the map.

In 1879, "Conger's Cammp" was established by Sam Conger. It was located in Blue River Valley, near Breckenridge, Summit Co., CO.

In the 1880 Census he and Diantha were living in Blue River Valley of Summit County, Colorado. Samuel was 47 and Diantha (maiden name unknown) was 39. Samuel's mine, located in Indian Gulch, was the "Diantha," a rich fissure mine which was reported to run 1,000 to 1,200 ounces per ton.

Around 1899, Sam Conger and his partner, Nelson Wannamaker discovered Tungsten (Black Iron) near Nederland in Boulder County, CO. They took ore samples to Denver to be assayed, after getting two opinions, they secured a lease and work on the property began. The mine was known as "The Galena." The partners sold the lease to Dr. Robert M. Bell, who developed the mine and renamed it, "The Conger." In it's day "The Conger" was the greatest tungsten mine in the world.

It was said that Sam Conger was a grand old man of the mountains, had made and lost three fortunes and lived his last few years financially uncomfortable. Tradition says Sam was a government scout during the Indian wars and that he was a friend of Buffalo Bill Cody. Sam was entitled to a pension but he felt he was capable of making his own way in the world.

Samuel Patterson Conger died at age 92 at the Denver General Hospital, Denver, CO on 23 Oct 1925. He is buried without headstone at Riverside Cemetery, W 1/2 Lot 13, plot 4.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Appanoose Co., [IA] history may not be complete without the mention of the name Conger. This family dates its beginning in America in the year of 1669, landing at Plymouth Rock. They were of French Huguenot descent. Hence in years each generation emigrated westward until you find the name Conger in all parts of the United States. They are all related, as the original name was Koniger, and was changed to Conger by John Conger the first. The Congers were first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of their countrymen. They furnished soldiers in every war from Colonial wars on down to the World War. The first [WWI] death recorded at Camp Dodge in Des Moines was [a] Conger from Appanoose Co.

John Conger III was a captain in the Revolutionary war. His son, Gershom, was Geo. Washington's orderly at Valley Forge, and he being the grandfather of the sons and daughters -- the Congers who emigrated to Appanoose Co., in pioneer days. Gershom resided and ended his days in Green[e] county, Pa. His descendants moved over into Monroe county, Ohio, and his grandchildren moved on to Iowa later.
[Note: Joyce Posey points out that Gershom Conger was not the antecendent of the Appanoose Co., Iowa Congers.]

Enos and Jane Strair [Note: Her surname is usually listed as Strayer. REH] Conger came first in 1846 and they homesteaded on the Chariton River. Then came Elias and John in 1849 and they homesteaded claims in Caldwell township. They were followed in the early '50's by Benoni [sic, still in Monroe Co., OH in 1860 census], James, Morris, Moses, Max, Mark and Stephen and with Cousins Charles, Elias and William.

[Note: Joyce Posey states that the cousins were probably the Powell family. Charles Powell married Rebecca Conger and they had sons, William and Elias. Benoni Conger and his family did not migrate to Appanoose Co., IA until about 1862-63. He was still in Monroe Co., OH at the time of the 1860 census.]

At one time, prior to the Civil war all these Conger families resided in Appanoose county, Iowa, and Putnam county, MO., and each of these families furnished soldiers in the Civil war -- they were abolitionists and were interested in the underground route in getting slaves north to freedom.

John [B.] Conger was progressive in the early day movements. At one time he lived in Centerville, [Iowa] and built one of the first brick residences in the town. He helped to organize the first bank in Appanoose county, and later was among the founders of Seymour, Iowa. In the early days he owned and operated one of the first tread-powered threshing machines ever run in this section of the state. This was an advancement over the old chaff piler and flailing system.

Benoni took to growing blooded cattle, and at one time had one of the best herds of Shorthorns (Durhams) in the state.

Elias [G.] drifted into growing blooded horses, and Enos was noted in the county as a horticulturist and farmer. All the other Conger boys became farmers, and their children likewise took up agricultural pursuits at which most of them were successful.

Many of the Conger descendants moved westward and became great benefactors in building up the great west. However, at this time possibly over 500 of the Conger descendants live in Appanoose and adjoining counties.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Enos Conger was my great-grandpa. His farm is a short distance west of me and I see the buildings everyday.

I have stood by his grave many times and am enclosing a picture which I want returned as I have only this one.

He was born 1/1/1814 and died 4/1/1903. He was married in 1838 to Ann Strayer, b. 1818, in Marshall Co., WV. She died and was buried in Monroe Co., OH. I don't know where. There were seven children: Margaret, Mary, Elias, Dorcus, Emma Jane, Caroline and Sarah.
[Note: Joyce Posey writes: Much of Keith Conger's information was already known. I disagree with his statement that Ann Strayer died in Monroe Co., OH. If she did, Enos must have remarried a "Jane" before coming to Iowa. The Appanoose Co., IA census of 1850 lists "Jane" age 37, b. OH and 1856 census of the same county lists "Jane" age 42, b. Ohio, as wife of Enos.]

After her death he and some, or perhaps all, of the kids came to Iowa. He then married a widow whose name was, Mary Jane Ireland (Lang). They were parents of Joseph Wallace, b. 12/22/1863, d. 4/20/1937 (my grandpa) and Fanny, who married Asa Smith.

Enos and Mary Jane Conger are buried in the Bozwell Cemetery. Many times before his death, grandpa, Wallace, would come to our place, a few days before Memorial Day, and he, Dad and I would walk through the fields and meadows to clean up their graves.

I write poetry and am having a book made up. Write again.

Jane Strayer

Jane Strayer

FATHER: John Strayer

AKA: Ann

BIRTH-CONFLICT: A birth date of 1818 in Marshall Co., VA is usually listed for Jane (Ann) Strayer. This date isn't supported by the available information. The 1850 census of Appanoose Co., IA lists her age as, 37 years old, which calculates to a birth year of Abt. 1813. The 1856 census of Appanoose Co., IA lists her age as 42 year old, which calculates to a birth year of Abt. 1814. Both of these dates are more consistent with the birth year of her husband, Enos, 1 Jan 1814 and they are used here.

COMMENT: According to Wilma Boden Barnett, the father of Jane Strayer (Strair) was John Strayer a Revolutionary War soldier. Jane was born in Marshall Co., VA/WV. No source citation was given to support this information.

CONFLICT: Was her name, Jane Strair (from newspaper article), Ann Strayer or Jane Strayer? Maxine Crowell Leonard lists, Ann Strayer as does Joyce Posey. She is listed as, Jane, in the 1850 census of Appanoose Co., IA. Robert Guilinger lists, Jane Strair. He found her mentioned as "Jane Strair" in an undated newspaper clipping about the Conger family, furnished by J.C. Harvey, of Seymour, IA. [Note: There are a number of statements made in J.C. Harvey article which don't seem to be supported by the facts. See her husband's note for the text of the article. REH]
QUESTION: Can any cite a proof for her name?

Census: 1850, in Appanoose Co., IA, Caldwell Twp., 34/34
Enos Conger, 36, Farmer, b. OH; Jane, 37, b. OH
Margaret, 11, OH; Mary, 9, OH; Elias, 7, OH; Darcus, 5, OH;
Emma J., 1, IA
[Note: The name Darcus on the census record could have been mispelled.]

DEATH-COMMENT: Jane Conger died after the 1856 census of Appanoose Co., IA and before the 1860 census of the same place. In the 1860 census her husband is shown without a wife.

CEMETERY-COMMENT: It is claimed that she is buried in the Bozwell Cemetery, Pleasant Twp., Appanoose Co., IA, without a headstone. There is no cemetery record and there is no death record as of July 1996.

2650. Darcus Conger

Darcus Conger

PARENTS: Enos Conger and Jane (Ann) Strayer

Problem: Was the first name, Dorcus, Dorcas or Darcus? The name is spelled, Darcus on the 1850, age 5, and 1860 census. This person was a female and apparently never married. Age 10, on 1856 census

DEATH: Apparently died Bef. 1903 as she is not mentioned in the Probate record of Enos Conger.

Mary Jane Ireland

Mary Jane Ireland

1095. Elias Conger

Elias Conger

PARENTS: David Conger, Jr. and Sarah Welch

RELATIONSHIP: According to Joyce Posey this Elias Conger was the nephew of Elias Darby Conger Sr., born 8 June 1763 in New Jersey. The younger was sometimes called Elias, Jr. to differeniate. Can it be proved that he was called Junior?

Problem: Joyce Posey lists his middle initial as, "D.". Can it be proved that his middle initial was, "D."?

AKA-BIRTH-DEATH: Ancestral File of Jan 1996 lists him as: Elias Darby Conger, Jr.; born 4 Oct 1790 in Middlesex, NJ; died 17 Nov 1869 in Monroe Co., OH; buried at Old Cameron Cem., Jamestown, Monroe, OH.

BIRTH-CONFLICT: Robert Guilinger lists the following dates: b. 4 Oct 1789, Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., NJ, d. 17 Nov 1869, Cameron, Monroe Co., OH. He has the estate record, dated Dec 1869. Clyde Decker lists the following dates: b. 3 Oct 1789, d. 17 Nov 1869. Others have listed a birth date of 16 Oct 1788. Maxine Crowell Leonard lists, b. 6 Sep 1789, Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ, d. 17 Nov 1869, Cameron, Monroe, OH (CFA I, p. 140), then corrects the birth date to, 6 Apr 1790 (CFA II, p. 715)

MARRIAGE-CONFLICT: Some say he was married in Green Co., PA and others in Monroe Co., OH. Ethel Conger Heagler listed, Green Co., PA. [Note: Robert Guilinger thinks that Mrs. Heagler was in error. He states, "No source quote for location of marriage, however Margaret moved as a young child with her father, Charles Atkinson, to Monroe Co., OH around 1799. Elias moved to Monroe Co. in the 1813 time period. There is no reason to believe they were not married in 1815 in Monroe County, OH."]
QUESTION: Who can cite a source for the marriage information?

TAX_LIST: 1820 Tax List of Monroe Co., OH

RECOLLECTIONS:
Julianna Conger Walton wrote that her father, Elias, and Uncle Gershom entered land together in Monroe county, Ohio. They built their houses and improved the land by clearing it. Elias bought out Gershom a few years later. Gershom went west, but spent the winter of 1847 with relatives in Ohio.

LEGAL_MATTER:
Journal 2, June term, 1835 (Court of Common Pleas) indicates that Elias Conger and wife sued Elizabeth Atkinson, Elijah Atkinson, Abel Atkinson et. al. The Elizabeth in this record is the widow of Charles, and her maiden name was Stephens. Elias Conger was married to Margaret Atkinson, a dau. of Charles. The suit was brought to prove whether the purported will of Charles Atkinson was true. Page 131 of the same Journal 2 indicates that the court found the will to be valid. The court records also show that Elizabeth, the widow, had declined to act as executor of the will, and the court appointed John Watson. He was married to Rebecca, another dau. of Charles and Elizabeth Atkinson. Perhaps he was a brother of David Watson who was possibly married to a Duvall - see the column on Conrad Duvall.

[Note: The information in quotes was verified by a photograph taken by Robert Guilinger in 1987. The only part that was unclear was the number of days. Birth date calculated from this data is: 3 Oct 1789. JoNelle Linnaus lists the number of days as, 11. REH]

BURIAL: Elias Conger who is buried at the Old Cameron Cemetery has a veteran's marker on his grave, although I could not find a pension application for him. He was born about 1789, as the inscription on his marker reads: "Died Nov. 17, 1869, 80 years, 1 mon., 13 days." He was married to Margaret Atkinson (sister of Mrs. Gilbert McCoy, (above). Margaret Atkinson Conger was born June 17, 1793 and died June 20, 1872. She is also supposed to be buried at Cameron, but I did not find a marker for her.

[Note: This extraction of what the tombstones says does not agree with what several others report. It seems to have an error in the year of death, which probably reads 1869, and the number of days he lived, which probably reads, 13. or 14. REH]

BIOGRAPHY:
Elias Conger (1789-1869), the great-great grandfather of researcher, Robert Guilinger, apparently left Washington Co., PA about 1813 and moved to Monroe Co., OH. There he resided and worked on the farm of his uncle, Elias Darby Conger (1763-1843). It is my opinion that Elias Conger left Pennsylvania in 1813 to avoid being drafted to serve in the War of 1812. Elias, being the oldest son of David Conger (1767-1833), was the first in line to inherit the family farm. I think his father gave Elias his inheritance as a lump sum when he left home.

Elias married a few months after the end of the War of 1812 on 17 Jun 1815 and bought a farm in Monroe Co., OH. He and his wife, Margaret Atkinson, had 10 children, all born in Monroe Co., OH.

I am descended from David A. Conger (1818-1895), the oldest son of Elias and Margaret.

1097. Aaron Conger

Aaron Conger

PARENTS: David Conger, Jr. and Sarah Welch

Problem: Was the date of death, 1867 as listed by Ethel Conger Heagler or 6 Jul 1876 in Licking Co., OH as listed by others?

BIOGRAPHY:
In 1824, Aaron and Mary McVey Conger left Pennsylvania and purchased a new home in Licking county, Ohio, near the north county line. Here the remainder of their family was born and they lived until their death. They never went back to the home in Pennsylvania or saw their parents again. When Ethel Conger Heagler visited the family in 1938 she was told she was the first of any of the descendants ever to go back in 115 years.

Aaron and Mary are buried in the beautiful Bell Cemetery, located by the church where they were members. This church is a landmark in that community. It sets on a hill overlooking a panoramic view of the country. It is 12 miles north of Newark, [OH]. This is pictured on page 15 of Ethel Heagler's booklet, "Conger History 1664-1941."

The following story is taken from Ethel Heagler's booklet, written by Clara A. Watson:

Aaron Conger and his blue-eyed wife, Mary McVey, who was of Scotch ancestry, moved from Pennsyvlania to Licking county, Ohio, in the 1820's. This woman was very energetic and ambitious in a material way, but found little time for study or reading in the hard life of pioneer days.

The couple bought a tract of hilly, stony, timberland for a home. The young man had been a school teacher in Pennsylvania, but fount all the work he could do in making a home on the new land.

The first work necessary was to provide shelter. Felling trees and hewing of logs provided the material for house and out-buildings. After this was done, the stones with which the land abounded were carefully gathered and used for building fences - a back breaking task.

A wonderful spring in a shallow ravine was an outstanding feature of the homesite. A spring house was built over it, and to this day, more than one hundred years later, a spring furnishes all the water needed for this farmhouse.

Within twenty-five years following this marriage, twelve children were born. As they grew up each child assumed certain responsibilities. The sons all learned to chop down trees and hew them into logs; clear timberland, and split rails for fencing the farmland. They learned to build fences that were, "horse-high, hog-tight, and bull-strong."

The oldest daughter learned the milliner trade and carried on a business in the home, which was far from a town of any size. The oldest son learned to repair boots and shoes. He provided a cobbler's bench and tools which he used to keep the family and neighbors in comfortable footwear. The third son learned to weave when he was 13 years old. From that time until he was 21 he did most of the weaving of the materials for the family clothing, including linen, woolen and linsey--woolsey, a cloth made of both flax and wool.

Aaron and Mary were members of the Christian Church, having been Presbyterian who embraced the faith of Alexander Campbell, and who insisted on being called, "Campellites."

Aaron Conger was a invalid during the latter part of his 72 years. He suffered from a form of rheumatism which made him an almost helpless cripple. No doubt this was brought on by exposure and hard work.

Aaron and Mary are buried in a picturesque spot in Licking county, [Ohio]. Bell Church stands on a steep hill commanding an entrancing view in all directions. Winding roads from three sides lead to this beautiful, "God's Acre."

It is more likely that the age 64 is recorded on the census, which calculates to a birth year of Abt. 1792. Also, it is not known who the parents of Elias G. Conger, age 10 might have been. QUESTION-DEATH: When and where did Moses Conger die? The Biographical sketch of his son, E.M. Conger states he died at the age of 75 years. If the date of birth was, Abt. 1791, the date of death would be, Abt. 1866. If the date of birth was Abt. 1801 the date of death would be Abt. 1876.

BIOGRAPHY:
The Moses Conger family was in Wayne Twp., Monroe Co., OH in 1850. They removed to Appanoose Co., Iowa, where most of the family died.

Moses is probably the Moses Conger who married Mary Ketchum on 27 Mar 1852 [sic] in Appanoose county, which would indicated that Elizabeth died shortly after the 1850 census. The first 3 children were listed in Mrs. Heagler's record, whereas she did not have some of those listed in the 1850 census. It appears that Moses did not marry until he was in his middle 30's. Had issue, some born in VA.

COMMENT:
In 1852, or thereabouts, "Mose" Conger, bought a barrel of whiskey, and began business at his cabin. One Sunday, two men approached "Mose" for a pint. "Mose" refused, replying, "I was raised a Presbyterian and some of the old faith sticks to me yet!"

COMMENT:
In 1852 or thereabouts, "Mose" Conger bought a barrel of whiskey and began business in a cabin.

One Sunday, two residents of the town called on Mose for a pint of the article, and found him on his chair so inebriated that he could not rise. The visitors asked him to furnish them, but he refused pointblank, saying he would not sell on Sunday.

He explained, "I was raised a Presbyterian and some old faith sticks to me yet."

But, so good a customer was Mose to himself that when his barrel became empty, his circumstance did not admit of his obtaining a fresh supply. [Note: These two items about Moses Conger and the whiskey point out vividly how difficult it is to obtain exact quotes from other documents unless the extractor can view the original. REH]

Sarah Jane (Conger) Stevens
Rhoda (Conger) Potter

COMMENT: How Many Moses Congers Were There in Appanoose Co., IA?
One or more men named Moses Conger lived in Appanoose Co., Iowa. Three women married a man named Moses Conger. The research challenge is to determine whether all three of these women married the same Moses Conger? Can it be proven using the available information that the three women married the same man? If so, in what year was he born? In what state was he born? What was the date of death?

Here's a summary of census information, with birth dates calculated, which will then be discussed in more detail.
1840, age 30-40, b. Abt. 1800 to Abt. 1810
1850, birth state of PA, age 59, b. Abt. 1791
1856, birth state of PA, age 54, b. Abt. 1802
1860, birth state of PA, age 56, b. Abt. 1804
1870, birth state of NJ, age 64, b. Abt. 1806

It is troubling that the birth state listed in the 1870 census is NJ, and not PA.

In the 1840 Monroe Co., Ohio census Moses Conger was between 30 and 40 years old. Using those two ages we can calculate an earliest and a latest possible birth date . If he was 30, he would be born Abt. 1810 (This is not likely in light of information we have from later census records.). If he was 40, he would be born, Abt. 1800. This gives us a range for the birth date, Abt. 1800 to Abt. 1810.

Based on the 1850 Monroe Co., OH census record it appears that Moses Conger, was born Abt. 1791 in Washington Co., PA. Maxine Leonard in "The Conger Family of America" lists the date of birth as Abt. 1797 with no source citation. Maybe the age, 59, listed in the 1850 census, was in error, either when recorded or when extracted. Perhaps his age was actually, 49, rather than 59. If so, the calculated birthdate would be, Abt. 1801, which would be more consistent with the ages listed in the other four census records.

Using the birth dates calculated from the other censuses we have: Abt. 1802 (1856 census), Abt. 1804 (1860 census), Abt. 1806 (1870 census), thus narrowing the birth date down to a period of 5 years 1802-1806. That's probably what should be entered in his record, born Abt. 1802/1806, although Abt. 1801 also should be considered as a possibilty for the first date in the range.

We know from a biographical sketch of his son, Elias Milton Conger, that his father lived to be 75 years old. Adding 75 to the birth range of Abt. 1802/1806 we arrive at Abt. 1877/1881 for the date of death.

What do we know about the marriages?

Abt. 1828, in an unknown place, he married Elizabeth Powell, born Abt 1810 in OH. Source: No citations for either date.

On 27 Mar 1854, at age 53 (b. Abt. 1801), he married, in Appanoose Co., IA, to Mary Kitchen, age 45, who was born Abt. 1809. Source: Appanoose Co., Iowa Marriage Records, Book 1, page 119.

On 7 Jan 1863 (no age listed) he married, in Appanoose Co., IA, to Lucinda [sic, Lorinda] (Dale) Powell, who was born, Abt. 1822/1826 in Madison Co., KY. Source: Appanoose Co., Iowa Marriage Records, Book 2, page 111.

Moses and Lorinda Conger have an 1870 census record which says he was 64 and born in New Jersey which would make his birth year, Abt. 1806. Why does the 1870 census record give the birthplace as New Jersey?

Moses and Lorinda Conger had a child, Moses D. Conger born on 9 Apr 1864 in Appanoose Co., IA. Based on the 1870 census data, the father would have been 58 years old when Moses D. Conger was born.

If the women didn't all marry the same man this would create another research problem. For example, the Moses Conger who married Lorinda (Dale) Powell, didn't just drop out of the sky at the time of the 1870 census. If there was another Moses Conger why haven't other records of his existence been found?

In this genealogy file the Appanoose Co., Iowa, Moses Conger, is entered as one person with three marriages. His birth date is entered as, Abt. 1802/1806 and the death date, Abt. 1877/1881. If, and when, additional information becomes available this is subject to change.

OBITUARY:
This community was shocked Sunday morning when it become known that Mrs. Rhoda Potter had passed away during the night as she was only ill a short time. Rhoda Conger, daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Conger, was born in Monroe County Ohio, March 15th, 1843, passed away at her home in Sumner, April 25, 1931 at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 10 days.

When a small child she moved with her parents to Iowa where she grew to womanhood later coming to Missouri making her home with her brother Milton Conger for a number of years.

She was united in marriage to Frank Potter.

While she had never united with any church she was converted when a young girl and had lived a Christian life and was a regular attendant at church services as long as health would permit. She was a firm believer in God's word and had read her Bible through many times.

She was the last of a large family and leaves only nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday morning at eleven o'clock by F. L. Burton. Interment in Lakeside cemetery.

COMMENT-QUESTION: This person was listed in the 1850 census as age, 1, and born in OH. Could this be the person later known as, Elias Milton Conger, who was born in 1846? Perhaps the census extraction misread the age, 4, as age 1.

PARENTS: David Conger, Jr. and Sarah Welch

CONFLICT: Records [Not cited. REH] stated that Ephraim Conger married, Eleanor Parns. In 1968, Lillian Conger Minor of Prosperity, PA said he married, Mary Ellen Iams in 1835 [Source not cited. REH] Ethel Conger Heagler said he married Eleanor Panis and had 12 children. Maxine Leonard listed both ladies as his wives. As of Aug 1999 it appears to researchers that the surnames, Parns and Panis are in error. The best guess as to the name of the wife of Ephraim Conger is, Eleanor Iams.

Eleanor Iams

Eleanor Iams

Problem: Some researchers list the date of birth as 2 Apr 1814. According to the 1904 newspaper article her date of birth was clearly listed as April 2, 1815 at Cranes Creek, Greene Co., PA.

NAME-CONFLICT: Mary Ellen Iams; Eleanor Iams; Eleanor Parns; Elenor Parns; Eleanor Panis. Eleanor (Iams) Conger in 1904 newspaper article. Take your pick.

Problem: What was the name of this person? Was this one person or two persons? If two persons, what was the order of the marriages and who was the mother of the children?

CHURCH_AFFILIATION: West Union Cumberland Presbyterian

RESIDENCES: As of 1904, near Dunns Station, Morris Township, Washington, Co., PA.

ANNIVERSARY:
A social event that enlisted the hearty sympathy of a large number of relatives and a host of friends as well, was the celebration Saturday of the 89th anniversary of the birth of Mrs. Eleanor (Iams) Conger which occurred at her home near Dunns Station, Morris Township [Washington Co., PA]. Upwards of 30 (?) people were in attendance at the celebration which has been an annual event for several years past.

Mrs. Conger was born on Cranes Creek, Greene Co., PA on 2 Apr 1815, and when she was four she was removed with her parents to Bakers Fork, where she resided till 1835, the year she was joined in marriage to Ephraim Conger, who died in 1893. The newly wedded couple went to the home that Mrs. Conger still occupies and there for almost three score years and ten, set as the span of human life by the Palmist, she resided, not only doing good as a neighbor but also as a wife and mother. For over six decades she has been an active and consistent member of the West Union Cumberland Presbyterian congregation and old as she is, her seat is seldom vacant in favorable weather. And this 89 year old lady disdains the use of a horse and carriage but climbs the hill a half mile long to the house of worship. She does her own housekeeping too, and seems to resent any proffered assistance from the younger people.

Twelve children blessed this union of Ephraim Conger and Eleanor Iams, eight of whom are still living and most of whom were gathered at the old home Saturday to be with their mother on her natal day. They are: Hiram, Elias and Albert Conger and Mrs. Hamilton Penn, all residing in the vicinity of the family home. Mrs. Mary Longdon and Mrs. Oliver Mattox of Washington, [PA]; Mrs. Joseph Dunn of Greene County and Mrs. Wm. Penn of Nebraska City, Neb. Mrs. Conger has 21 great-grandchildren. She is the oldest person residing in Morris Township and, with the single exception of a slight deafness, retains all her faculties.
