Israel Hafer

Israel Hafer

NAME-CONFLICT: Israel Hofer on Ancestral File; Israel Hafer on the tombstone

COMMENT: The Israel Hafer family can be found in the Conger and the Yoho genealogy files of researcher, Richard E. Henthorn.

RESIDENCES-CHILDREN-RELATIONSHIP: According to John Knisely, they lived in Greene Co., PA; then in Morgan Co., OH and later in Guernsey Co., OH. He lists the birth date of Israel Hafer as, Abt. 1781 and of Hannah as, Abt. 1794. The states, "Among their children were John Hafer, m. Jane McBride; Elias Hafer; and probably Joseph Hafer. ... I suspect that my ancestor, Sarah Jane Hafer, b. 2 Sep 1826, PA, d. 25 Dec 1863, Greene Co., PA, who married William Knisely, is also one of Israel and Hannah's children."

He also states, "Israel was the brother of Joseph Hafer and (probably) the brother of Jacob Hafer, b. c1795, m. Elizabeth Simpson and lived in Greene Co., Pennsylvania.".

Further, "There was a widow, Lydia Hafer on the 1840 census of Morgan Co., OH. I think it's likely she's a relative of Israel; perhaps she's the widow of his brother, Joseph."

CHILDREN: It is known from the biographical sketch of John Hafer, the husband of Jane McBride, that he was the son of Israel Hafer and Hannah Conger.

CHILDREN: Researcher John Knisely lists the children of Israel Hafer and Hannah Conger as: Jacob (probably); Joseph (probably); Elias; John; Sarah Jane his ancestor (possibly/probably); Rhoda J.; Samuel (possibly); Israel Jr.; Charlotte; Hester. Further research will be necessary to prove the members of this family.

PARENTS: Elias Darby Conger, Sr. and Mary Goble

BIRTH-PROBLEM: Ancestral File lists the birth as, 1789, Greene, PA

MARRIAGE: The information about the marriage of David Conger and Rebecca Sharp is confusing.

Apparently most records, none cited, say that David Conger and Rebeccas Sharp were married Abt. 1814 in Greene Co., PA.

In the book, "Ten Mile Country and it's Pioneers," by Howard L. Lecky, historian, on page 456 there are two contradictory entries.
Rachel Sharp, b. 1788, married David Conger
Rebecca Sharp, b. 1794, married Ephraim Corwin.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Robert O. Conger, son of John Spencer Conger, wrote the following on 4 May 1911: "Our great grandfather (Elias Darby Conger) was a hard-shell Baptist preacher during the War of Revolution of Long Island. He came from Essex county, NJ.

David married into a family of Pennsylvannia Moonshiners. Father told me all this. He says he remembers folks used to gather at his father's home. They were all raw-boned fellows, wore red shirts, broad hats, with their pants in the tops of their boots. I don't know when they left Pennsylvania or Peach Creek."

BIOGRAPHY:
David and Rebecca Conger left Manchester, IN in 1854 and settled at Bluff Creek Twp., Monroe County, Iowa. They had just moved into their new house when Rebecca died of the Spotted Fever. She and David and son, Elias, were buried on the homestead, on Section 10, owned by Frank Durbala in 1961. Years later, after a cemetery was established in the area, relatives tried to remove the bodies but nothing was left. They built a stone wall around and area 10' x 16' and deeded it to the county as a cemetery. A tree grows in the middle of the graves, as of 1965.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 118 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

RESIDENCES: As of the 1870 census he was living with his son, Elias Milton Conger and family.

DEATH: David Conger, of this county, died a short time ago while on a visit to one of his daughters near Albia [Iowa]. He was about 80 years old.

RECOLLECTIONS: Conner's Ridge Cemetery Holds Stephen Conger - b. 23 Oct 1796; d. 12 May 1859 by Willis and Dorothy Hollingsworth

On August 4, 1997 we turned off I-77 at Caldwell, OH to drive 30 miles east to Woodsfield, OH. We were only 25 miles from Marietta, OH.

Our first stop in Woodsfield was the Monroe Co. court house. The recorder's office had no records; they had been destroyed by fire many yearss ago. They recommended the library where we did find info on the cemetery. We also stopped at the county engineer's office and he gave us a county road map. A county worker gave us detailed instructions how to get to Wayne Twp. The library info verified that Stephen Conger and Mary (Piatt) Conger were buried there.

It was very hot that day, but Dorothy finally found Stephen Conger's marker. We never found a marker for Mary. It wasn't here Stephen's. We should have searched more. In the row directly in front of Stephen's marker were Isaac and Mary Lowe's markers. They were the parents of Elizabeth Lowe, wife of James Conger, son of Stephen (two more of Willis' g.g.grandparents). We were very lucky to have found them.

Stephen and Mary (Piatt) died 21 years apart. This may be the reason her marker was not near her husband's. The markers are in the center of the old cemetery, west of the Conner Ridge Methodist Church. The cemetery is in the Wayne National Forest. We were driving our 1960 Edsel.

[Note: Two photographs accompanied the article. One showed a view of several stones, with that of Stephen Conger indicated. The other was a close up of the stone of Stephen Conger which read: STEPHEN CONGER; DIED; MAY 12, 1859; AGED 62 Yrs. 6; Mo. & 22 Days. Under a line there is a verse inscribed which can't be read in the photograph. REH]
(Source: Conger Confab, March 1998, p. 7)

Problem: What was the birth date of Stephen Conger? The birthdate calculated from the information on his tombstone is 20 Oct 1796. Others have listed 22 Oct 1796 and the Hollingsworths listed 23 Oct 1796.

BIOGRAPHY: Carried Gold In False Bottom of Their Tool Chest
Among the early settlers of Caldwell township, [Appanoose Co., IA], was John Conger, born in Green county, Pennsylvania in 1808. His wife, Elizabeth Atkinson Conger, was born in Ohio. She was the daughter and granddaughter of Revolutionary war soldiers and a half-sister of General Atkinson, prominent in the Black Hawk war.

Mr. and Mrs. Conger and their six children came from Ohio by flat-boat down the Ohio river to St. Louis where they transferred their belongings to a Mississippi river boat bound for Keokuk. They landed in Keokuk in the spring of 1849. The family remained in Lee county, while Mr. Conger looked for a location. In the fall of 1849 they came by covered wagons to Appanoose county, [IA], and paid $500 dollars in gold for an improved claim five miles south of Centerville. The gold was carried from Ohio in a double bottom tool chest. Many beautiful pieces of furniture, china and quilts were brought to the new home in the west. Soon after their arrival the house and contents were destroyed by fire. The family lived in the "claim house" a log house containing one room and a loft, until the new log house was built, a part of which is now standing. The improvements on the claim were some rail fences, small barn or shed, made of logs and a splendid deep well of water. A little girl who came to play with the Conger children told them her, "Granny Van Dike said the Mormons dug the well." When asked if her Granny was a Mormon, she replied, "Oh, no, she is just Granny."

Mr. and Mrs. Conger were charter members of the Christian church of Exline, [IA], which was organized in 1855. The Conger family moved to Centerville in 1864 and to Wayne county in 1869.

When the call came for volunteers in the Civil War, William Conger enlisted in Co., I, 36th Iowa, under Captain J.B. Gedney. He died at Benton Barracks in Dec. 1862. Charles Conger enlisted in Co. B, 6th Kansas Cavalry under Captain E.E. Harvey.

Nancy J. Conger married Wallace M. Harvey in Feb. 1861. In August of the same year he enlisted in Capt. Edwards state militia, traveling through Missouri to St. Joe, Mo., where they disbanded. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. I, 36th Iowa under Capt. J.B. Gedney and served until 1865 when he was mustered out of the service.

Lydia A. Conger married Newton C. Michael, Civil War soldier serving in the 17th Ia. under Capt. J.F. Walden.
[Note: The statement that Elizabeth Atkinson was a half-sister of General Aktinson, prominent in the Black Hawk War is incorrect, according to researchers working on the Atkinson family in 1996. There were two Atkinsons with the same name and no one has ever offered proof that there is any connection between General Aktinson and the Atkisons of Monroe Co., Ohio. REH]

BIOGRAPHY:
John Conger (John B. 1808) was progressive in the early day movements. At one time he lived in Centerville and built one of the first brick residences in the town. He helped to organize the first bank in Appanoose county, and later was among the founders of Seymour, Iowa. In the early days he owned and operated one of the first tread-powered threshing machines ever run in this section of the state, This was an advancement over the old chaff-piler and flailing system.

ERROR: Ulysses Grant Ross reported that John Conger died about 1878/1879. According to Robert Guilinger, the date of death is 8 Aug 1883 and he believes Mr. Ross was in error. Joyce Posey also lists the date of death as, 1883.

Charles Powell

Charles Powell

ERROR-PARENTS: At one time it was assumed that the father of Charles Powell was Abner Powell. Abner Powell was an early settler of Monroe County, Ohio. Apparently this was erroneous relationship information from Mrs. Fedorchak to Joyce Posey. In October 2000, researcher Joyce Posey reiterated to Dick Henthorn that this assumption was in error. She believes his parents were William and Elizabeth Powell of Adams Twp., Monroe Co., OH.

COMMENT: Researching the Powell surname in Putnam Co., Mo., is difficult, as more than one Powell family lived there amd they were not related. There are Powell families from Ohio and from Kentucky. Some of the Powell's who were from Appanoose & Wayne counties in Iowa, went across the border to Missouri to be married. Some of the "Ohio" Powell's lived as neighbors to the "Kentucky" Powells. The research becomes very difficult when an Ohio Powell marries a Kentucky Powell. (Furnished by Joyce Posey)

MARRIAGE: Information about the marriage of Charles Powell and Rebecca Conger can be found in Ethel Heagler's book and in CFAI by Maxine Crowell Leonard. CFA II, p. 398 lists the marriage as, Abt. 1835.
