BIOGRAPHY:
"My mother, Geneva Wilcox Clark, always felt the responsibility of the care of her own mother, Dora Ann Conger Wilcox. She was raised in the home of her grandmother, Nancy Margaret Slaton Conger, who had lost her own husband, Paton. Paton, as did his own father, Elisha, kept the custom of this area of "sitting-up" with a neighbor who had died of typhoid fever. Both Paton and Elisha died of the same illness soon afterward."Mother's uncles, Albert, "Doss" and Charles, lived nearby and helped their own mother, Nancy, with her crops. Dora Ann also worked in the garden and fields. Frail Malinda, who later died of T.B., helped in the house.
"When Mother was educated and grown, she accepted the responsibility of the total support of her mother, Dora Ann. Mother taught two years in a 'one-room' country school to afford Lockyear's Business College in Evansville, Ind. After graduation she became a secretary and bookkeeper in local offices of Marion Flourspar Offices. My grandmother and mother 'pooled' what money they had from the sale of my great-grandfather's farm with money earned in order to purchase a small home. (I grew up in this home before a new one was built in 1948.)
"After marriage, I came along to stop her from her position. Times were difficult in those depression years, causing Mother to feel obligated to return to her position when I was about three years of age. Grandmother Dora kept me, helping with the cooking, etc. My sister arrived and Mother continued working.
"Dad had begun contracting to build homes, as well as sell lumber and other building materials. As the business grew, so did Mother's responsibility as bookkeeper, salesperson, etc. Today, March 1969, Mother still maintains the book work of Clark Building and Supply Co., with the aid of my sister, a Bowling Green Business graduate. Sam Smith, Linda's husband, works with Dad along with other help. Dad discontinued contracting several years ago in order to slow down. Dora Ann Conger always lived and worked in Mother's home until her death in 1961."

RECOLLECTIONS:
"I have a sad story about Wilma I. Conger Cloyd who died of Alzheimers after
being in a rest home 9 1/2 years. When she was in the local hospital a short
time before being admitted to the rest home she said, 'I don't need to be here.
I don't have any pain whatsoever. I just don't remember like I used to and
that worries my family.'She had lost the use of her hands somewhat and gradually lost control of
movement over the years until she was unable to do anything, even eat or talk.
One of the saddest times was the last time she tried to talk to me. She tried
so hard and did make me understand, by motion, what she wanted to say. I
believe that was as much as five years before she died of pneumonia.Wilma had an excellent memory, was county spelling champion when whe was 12
years old, and was Valedictorian when she graduated from high school after ten
years in school. She worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority several years
and got that job by making the highest grade on an examination for the job.
