Mary Thompson

RESIDENCES-RELATIONSHIP:
On 16 Apr 1843, John B. Conger, b. Abt. 1784 who was spouse of Elizabeth Archer, wrote that he had taken one of the granddaughters of his brother, Jonathan, to be a companion for his daughter, Martha. She was about 15 and the daughter of Sally Conger who married Felix Thompson.

This might be the person, referred to as, Miss Mary C. Compton, in the 11 Jun 1853 will of Mrs. Martha Archer (Conger) Tucker.

RELATIONSHIP: John B. Conger of Grand Gulf, MS, in a letter written about 1844, tells of taking a grandchild of brother, Jonathan Conger, as a companion to his daughter, she being the daughter of Sally Conger, who married Felix Thompson.

This grandchild was Mary Thompson, who lived with her cousin, Martha Archer Conger, even after her marriage to Gov. Tiglman M. Tucker. Before her marriage to Gov. Tucker, Martha A. Conger made a will, which provied handsomely for Mary Thompson. After her marriage she made a second will, leaving the bulk of her estate to "Miss Mary C. Compton" (according to the records), who much have been Mary Thompson. At any rate, Mary received most of the estate amassed by John E. [sic] Conger.

1000. Martin Conger

Martin Conger

PARENTS: Johnathan Conger and Margaret Elston

BIOGRAPHY:
Martin Conger was born in Rowan county, NC and removed to Mississippi with his father, about 1806, and settled in Claiborne county, where his father was a planter.

About 1830, Martin and his family removed from near Vicksburg, Warren county, [MS], to Clinton, MS. He was one of the pioneer settlers of this region. The road that he traveled to Clinton was, in many places, prepared by him before his wagons could travel. In many places he hd to cut trees down to clear a road.

He was a staunch Methodist.

According to Mrs. E.F. Gill, Martin Conger did not leave any will. His estate was administered by Eli Garner. Each of his four children obtained from two to five slaves apiece, according to the valuation of their pro rata of 160 acres of land. Martin had left $4,000 in cash, which Mr. Garner had squandered in some wild speculations or security debts.

Mrs. Gill states that there was a family joke about Martin having red hair. Martin and his brother, Jonathan Lee [Conger], both married women called, Sally. So Jonathan's wife was called, "Sally Lee." Martin's wife was teased at marrying a red head and told that she would have all read-headed daughters. It turned out that their girls had black hair, and Jonathan and Sally Lee had two girls with blazing red hair.

BIOGRAPHY:
The Elisha Conger family was living in DeKalb Co., TN in 1850 and 1860. In 1860, Isaac J. Conger, age 18, was living with them, whereas in 1850 only children Eli and Martha were in the household. Elisha's nephew, Joshua, b. 1818, had a son, Isaac J., who was born in 1842. Perhaps it was this Isaac [who was] living with them to help with the farming. The 1860 census shows Martha Cheatam and daughter, Martha, living with them also. They lived near the river, nine miles north of Smithville. Elisha and Nancy are buried on the homestead.

RECOLLECTIONS: Excerpt of a 6 May 1905, letter from granddaughter, Martha J. (Cheatman) Corley.
"I want to write more to your about Grandpa Elisha Conger. He was a farmer, very ingenius, could make anything out of wood or iron. He made nearly everything he used, also always had boutiful of all good things. He owned a good farm, scarecely ever was in debt. He was honest and religious. He could quote nearly the whole scripture without the Bible. He was so good.

"I was born in his house. He raised me. I think he was the best man I ever saw. He was very industrious. After Grandma died he lived with me most of the time, until he died here with me. He was nearly 90 years old. He was blind and deaf, and nearly helpless the last year or so. We had to feed him and lead him about. He bore it all so good, was always pleasant before he died. He said he believed he knew the way to Heaven as well as he knew the way back to his home. I think he was as spotless as a human being could be on earth. I hope to meet good Granpa and the rest of them, all my good folks in a better land. I shall be glad to be of some help in the Conger Union if I can, in the future."
