OBITUARY: May D. McCandless, age 96, Independence, [MO] died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000 at the Hidden Lake Care Center.
Mrs. McCandless was born Aug. 4, 1903 in Enid, OK and had lived in Independence for 67 years. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church of Independence. Her husband, Harry L. McCandless, died in 1985.
Her survivors include three sons: Richard E. McCandless, Medford, OR, Delbert L. McCandless, Aurora, CO and Gerald R. McCandless, Goodyear, AZ; one brother, John [F.] Conger, Denver; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery, Kansas City.

Lonnie Allen Conger was a member of the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve from the age of 17 (August 1935).He was a member of the Gideons, and State Chaplain since 1966.
He was an active lay worker in the church, member of Toastmaster International. He enjoyed public speaking. He had a great concern for others and wanted to help where able.
On and Saturday afternoon in the spring of 1970, Lonnie and his wife, surprised Mrs. Leonard by stopping by for a couple of hours. They had been in the area to attend a Gideon meeting.
Lonnie was of great assistance in gathering family data for his line.

ANNIVERSARY: Lonnie and Bertha Conger Celebrate 60 Years of Wedded Bliss Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie W. Conger, Davenport [IA] will be honored at an open house June 27, [1999] to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.Bertha M. Jennings and Mr. Conger were married July 2, 1939 at Wesley Methodist Church, manse, Muscatine, Iowa.
Mr. Conger retired in 1978 after 23 years at the Rock Island Arsenal. He retired in 1977 from the U.S. Navy after 36 years of active and reserve duty, including service in the Pacific during World War II.
His wife retired in 1989 after 30 years at Carroll & Co., Davenport.
The couple are members of Faith United Methodist Church, Davenport, Quad-City Times Plus 60 Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. They enjoy spending time with their family, traveling and reading.
Mr. Conger is a member of American Legion Post 26, Davenport; Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 828; Am Vet Post 144; Fleet Reserve Association; Gideons International; Davenport Camp; Trinity Lodge 208; Masons; Davenport Scottish Rite; Davenport York Rite; Kaaba Shrine; Mohassan Grotto; and Davenport High Twelve Club.
Mrs. Conger is a member of Davenport American Legion Auxiliary.

After years of service to his Post, County and District Lonnie Conger has been elected Department Commander for 2000-2001. A new millennium beckons with the dawn of 2001 and Commander Conger is ready for the challenge. He is a live member of Post #26.Conger has chosen "Anchors Aweigh, the Iowa Way," as his theme this year. He will make the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown his project. Conger believes membership is the key to the success of The American Legion. His enthusiasm and that of the staff and officers and his committee appointments will help reinvigorate the organization during this membership year, he said.
Lonnie and his wife, Bertha, are the parents of two sons, a daughter, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His son, also a member of Post #26 and grandson are also members of Davenport post. Bertha is a life member of Auxiliary Unit #26.
Retiring after 23 years with the Department of the Army, the last ten as an Inventory Management Specialist responsible for all self-propelled artillery, Lonnie is now retired and willing to travel and speak on behalf of the Legion and his many projects.

Hazel M. Powers, 79, a resident of Davenport, [IA], died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center - East Campus, Davenport, following a brief illness.Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan - McCabe - DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Hazel's brother, Lonnie A. Conger, will conduct services. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
There will be an additional visitation on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Hazel Marie Conger was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Messena [sic, Massena], Iowa, a daughter of John Allen and Mary Edna (Kerr) Conger. She married Richard B. Powers on Jan. 7, 1943, in Davenport. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1992.
She graduated from Bayard High School in 1938. She attended Thompson Beauty College on a basketball scholarship, earning her beautician certificate.
Hazel owned and operated the Arlington Beauty Salon, Davenport, for more than 50 years.
She was a member of the Women's Bowling Association and participated in several area leagues; was a member of Ladies of the Moose and the Diehard Cubs Fan Club; and was an avid bingo player.
Memorials may be made to a memorial fund established in her name.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Mike Powers, Galesburg, Ill., Bernie and Linda Powers, Davenport, and Randy and Jan Powers, Rapid City, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Dooley, Davenport; brothers, Lonnie, Dale and Marvin Conger, all of Davenport, and Gerald Conger, Benton, Pa.; and a special friend, Peggy Dannatt.
In addition to her husband, a son, John Powers; a grandson, John Tyrone Powers; a great grandson, Logan Powers; a sister, Helen Banks; and brother[s], Clyde, George and Ken Conger preceded her in death.
