She was very active in the community after they left the farm. She love rocks, mountains and growing things. She loved to read most of all. She hated to cook and never had much money to buy food. She was a good seamstress. She was a great mother. When Rodney was 7, in 1951, she married Leo Chase and they lived on the farm. Next they lived in Miranda, SD and then in Faulkton, SD. She had a stroke.

When the Depression hit, Daddy lost his position at the Minneapolis Moline so we went to Missouri to join his parents who had left Minneapolis earlier. Grandpa Van Doren was alone when Grandma had died that year. Daddy and Grandpa McDanel farmed together 9 years. When the war approached in 1941, Daddy was called back to work as a crane man. We sold everything we had and went back to the city. Grandpa Van Doren had died. After the sale of all our goods, inside and outside, we cleared $500. I had just graduated from high school, Doris was a senior and Donal was a freshman.
