OBITUARY: Ralph J. Conger
Ralph J. Conger of Layfayette Street, St. Regis Falls, NY died early Sunday morning, September 12, 1999, at Adirondak Medical Center, Saranac Lake, [NY].

Born in St. Regis Falls, March 16, 1926, he was the son of Wilbert and Clara Palmer Conger. His parents predeceased him.

He attended Dickson Center Grade School and St. Regis Falls High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Texas and Panama from 1946 until 21 Jun 1947 when he was honorably discharged.

On May 28, 1954, he married Kathleen M. Moose at the Nicolville Methodist Parsonage, with the Rev. Ralph Fulmer presiding. Mr. and Mrs. Conger were attended by Walter and Regina Winters. His wife survives.

Mr. Conger was previously employed by Alcoa in Massena, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and also worked as an operating engineer in various construction sites for 25 years. He was then employed by the Town of Waverely as highway superintendent for several years until retirement in 1991.

Mr. Conger was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers 545, St. Regis Falls Sportsmen's Club, Best Sportsmand's Club of Duane, and a member of the St. Regis Falls Volunteer Fire Department having served as fire chief for many years. He had also been fire commissioner of the fire department until his death. He was previously a member of the St. Regis Falls Rescue Squad. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Besides his wife, surviving are two sons, Ralph Conger, Jr. and his companion, Belinda Handlen, and Gary Conger and his companion, Linda Farrington, all of St. Regis Falls; a sister, Edyth Phillips of St. Regis Falls; a sister-in-law, Margaret Conger of Massena; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Hubert Conger in 1975 and Wilbert Conger, Jr., who died in infancy in 1930.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in St. Regis Falls, with the Rev. Colleen Rowse presiding. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery, St. Regis Falls, [NY].

Memorial donations may be made to St. Regis Falls Fire and Rescue Squad.
