RECOLLECTIONS:
Richard Conger had a very interesting life. There are many family stories that his ex-wife, Esther, tells that are almost unbelievable. When his children, Barry and Toni, were little the family would drive from Phoenix to Alaska each summer in a converted school bus. Richard would do construction work on the Alaska highway. They would return to Arizona in the fall so the kids could attend school.In Arizona he was a member of the musician's union and played saxaphone in local clubs.
For at least a couple of years, Esther home-school the children in the bus and they spent the whole year driving around the country (at speeds never exceeding 20 mph, to hear Barry tell it).
Richard was a self-taught photographer and some of his photos of the Alaskan landscape and wildlife can still be seen on postcards available along the Alaska highway.
He also worked as an animal handler for Walt Disney during the filming of "Nanuck, Wild Dog of the North."
