RECOLLECTIONS:
Ivan Albert Conger wrote on 23 Aug 1969: I was the one who gathered all the information for the first copy of our Conger History -- Descendants of Job A. Conger. It was published in March of 1959 after about two years of gathering information. Some of the chapters were written by members of that particular branch and then I put them all together and had them published. Seven of us advanced the money for printing and then we got our money back as they were sold. We still have approximately 30 copies left and with the proceeds from these we plan on getting a family tree made up for distribution.Genealogy is very interesting and can also be very nerve - racking, due to the many sources of information and the many different dates for one single part. I enjoy it very much but do not have much time for it. I am especially interested because I now am the president of our Shiawasse County Historical Society. This all ties very closely with genealogy. I think it is just wonderful that there have been so many members of the family over the years who have had so much of an interest in getting this information all put together."
On 28 October 1970 he reported that, the descendants of Job Conger and Harriet Jewell met at his house in June for the 8th year in a row. He wrote, "The first year (1963) we had 20 people present -- an increase of 8 over 1962. We had 76 this year, an increase of 20 over last year. I had put in a swimming pool. We had many new ones for the first time and many who hadn't been to a reunion for a good many years. I was just overjoyed! They all love to come here to our home. We have a large back yard and plenty of shade. Have a park right behind me if some want to go play there. Everyone really has a ball and says, 'they didn't know what they were missing but will be back again.' Each year they vote to come back without even asking if they can. They just insist! We love it even if it is a lot of work. Besides, with results like that -- 20 to 76 -- how could we ever think of refusing?"

RECOLLECTIONS: Grand Marshall
Ivan Conger of Owosso [, MI], often called 'the official James Oliver Curwood historian,' has been chosen as the grand marshall for this years's Curwood Festival Heritage Parade, which will step off at 2 p.m. June 5, [1999]. The letter nominating Conger for the honor reads, in part, 'He is 'Mr. Curwood.' He has devoted years to the castle, the Shiawassee County Historical Society and the genealogy society. He serves as castle curator and on the historical society board as treasurer. He is author of "The Curwood Collection" (pictures and stories by James Oliver Curwood, as well as information on his books, movies and life). Mr. Conger is also an active member of the First United Methodist Church. He is a regular blood donor for the Red Cross. He is always willing to lend a hand when needed.

OBITUARY: Paul Rae Conger
Of 138 Mountain Hollow Lane, Rustburg, Virginia, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001.Mr. Conger was a farmer and also worked at Universal Electric for 28 years.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 7, 2001, 1 p.m. at the Free Methodist Church, corner of North and Chipman Streets in Owosso, [MI]. Visitation will be at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Conger was born July 2, 1932, in Rush Township, the son of Frank L. and Hattie E. (Barker) Conger. He was a resident of Rush Township until 1986.
He was a member of Freedom Word Church, Appomattox, Virginia; also a member of SW Virginia Emmaus Community and Virginia Kairos.
Survivors include: his wife of 49 years, Shirley J. (Schlaack) Conger; three sons, Michael P. (Julia) of Dewey, Arizona, Ronald R. (Nancy) of Rustburg, Virginia, and Eric G. (Susan) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; two daughters, Linda S. (Steve) Kibbe and Jodi L. (Brian) Cudney, both of Rustburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Carrie Ann Conger, USAF, Felton, Delaware, Samantha Ashley and Joshua Paul Conger of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Greg (Tommy) Bradner of Raleigh, North Carolina, Brian L. Cudney, Jr. of Flint, and Jenna Miller of Dewey, Arizona; two brothers, Glenn F. (Lillian) of Ovid and Ivan A. (Dorothy) of Owosso; one sister, Wanda L. (Heinz) Schlaack; "special children" Michael Bush, Stephen and Kathleen O'Neil, Elke Schaeffer; several nieces and nephews.

Age 67, of Durand, passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, at Genesys Hospice Care Center, Goodrich, [MI].Mr. Schlaack worked 32 years in skilled trades at GM Flint Metal Fabricating.
Services were to be held at Nelson-House Funeral Home, today Thursday, April 12, 2001, at 11 a.m. Mark St. Louis, Minister, officiated. Burial was Riverside Cemetery, Henderson.
Mr. Schlaack was born August 12, 1933, in Stettin, Germany, the son of Alfred and Dora Marie (Ferchland) Schlaack, and had resided most of his life in Shiawassee and Genesee Counties. On May 13, 1968, he married Wanda Conger in Owosso.
He was a member of U.A.W. 659.
Survivors include: wife, Wanda; three sons, Thomas (Jennie) Schlaack of Lansing, Michael (Susan) Schlaack of Howell, John (Lori) Schlaack of Byron Center; daughter, Heidi Lynn Schlaack of Owosso; brother, Ronald (Rose) Schlaack and sisters, Rosemarie (Stuart) Miller and Monika Eckmyre, all of Owosso; 11 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by: his parents; brother, Manfred; and sister, Margot.
