(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 41a - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

CHURCH_AFFILIATION: Episcopalian

RESIDENCES: 5017 Caryn Ct. #303; Alexandria, VA

BIOGRAPHY: From the "Akron Beacon Journal," 8 Jun 1965 - WASP Commanded by Native of Akron.
A native Akronite played a good-sized role in the history making Gemini 4 Space Shot. Capt. James W. Conger, a West High School graduate, commanded the aircraft carried WASP which picked up the Astronauts.

Conger is the son of the later Latham Hubbard Conger, and the grandson of Akron pioneers, Colonel and Mrs. A.L. Conger. His mother, Mrs. Latham Conger, now lives in Weston, Mass., with her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Nichols.

Conger was graduated from West High in 1937. He spent the next year at Bullis School, Silver Spring, Maryland, preparing for the Naval Academy. He was appointed to Annapolis in 1938 by Congressman-at-Large, Harold G. Mosier of Cleveland.

For two years he held the Ohio high school 220 yard free style swimming championship and the State YMCA title for the same event. He was graduated in 1942 from the Naval Academy. After World War II he was stationed at Norfolk, VA, as executive officer of an aircraft squadron on the carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since then he has served in several assignments. He has been in command of the WASP about a year.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 262-263 - Maxine Crowell Leonard).

BIOGRAPHY: From the New York Herald Tribune, 8 Jun 1965.
In speaking of the Gemini team: "They said very little except they were very damned glad to be aboard," said Admiral William W. McCormack, recover - operation commander. He and WASP Capt. James W. Conger were the first persons on the ship to welcome the spacemen aboard the carrier, which will be their home for the next three days.

Admiral McCormack and Capt. Conger escorted the astronauts between a double line of Marine Honor Guards and down a red carpet to a door leading below. The space twins walked with their arms slung around each other's shoulders and smiled as they left the deck.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 263 - Maxine Crowell Leonard).

RECOLLECTIONS: When asked about his part in this event, Jim wrote on 30 Jun 1970: "The carrier was WASP and it was the first manned recovery of The Gemini, or Twin Series (known as G-74). As a result we received almost as much publicity as the first trip around the moon. It was the longest mission in space at that time and at at time when doctors weren't very sure whether man could survive weightlessness. It was also the mission when we had the 'space walk,' a first, by Ed White."

In his letter he mentioned that he had not seen Ned (Clayton Ned Conger, also a Naval Officer) since about 1960.
