She was a local Girl Scout leader, a founder of the Peninsula Library, a president of the Peninsula Garden Club, and a council person for the Village of Peninsula. Mrs. Bender was often referred to as the "Bridge Lady". Her love of flowers and the community inspired her to plant and maintain flower boxes on the town bridge over the Cuyahoga River.

BIOGRAPHY: From a brochure about National Executive Search, Inc (NESINC)
George D. Conger, Vice President, has spent his entire business career operating his own private enterprises consisting of five corporations ranging from chain retail stores, light manufacturing to service companies. Mr. Conger spent his military service in financial posts in the Army and has been active in community welfare projects and politics.

At the close of World War II some 11 million people were undergooing post - military readjustment. American industry was converting from war production to peace - time product development. This flux created one of the greatest personnel problems in the history of the national economy. Industry was desperate for talent, experienced executives, industrial managers, and professional personnel were available but, returning from service, were in need of counseling, guidance and direction to help them be considered for appropriate career opportunities.

A group of far - seeing executives from business, industry and research immediately recognized this problem and did something about it. They organized a personnel service enterprise -- today known as NESIC -- dedicated to the task of matching this available talent with industrial requirements and offering the needed direction to both corporate enterprise and the individual.

NESINC now has offices in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Houston, Cleveland, San Francisco, Atlanta and Washington, DC. Clients come from all 50 states and some foreign countries.

BIOGRAPHY: "Akron Beacon Journal," 12 Sep 1965
Hustle, whiz, rush, dart .... there are more than 60 words synonymous with speed. Every one of them could apply to the world of Peninsula's Charles Henry Conger.

As president of the Akron Trucking Association and sales vice president for Bender and Loudon Motor Freight in West Richfield, his life is dominated by speed. He deals in freight ... the business of moving material from one point to another as quickly as possible.

Wiry and prematurely gray, Charley Conger is at home in a world of fast deadlines and rapid deliveries. Shortly after five each morning, he whirls out of bed and hurtles into the indoor swimming pool adjoining the master bedroom of his home at 1570 Stine Road in Peninsula, [OH]. While the rest of his family sleeps, he swims 40 laps, then shaves, dresses, eats and rips off to his office. He is at his desk by 7:30, ready to answer a customer's frantic question about a badly needed shipment, or scurry off on a sales trip to Detroit.

"I hate to wait for anything," says Charley Conger. His friends will tell you he isn't kidding. It would seem that the only thing Charley ever waited for was the stork.

He was not the first son of Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Conger of Peninsula. He was the fourth in a family of five boys and one girl. Born on May 4, 1917, Charley looks back on his younger years in the easy village of Peninsula as rich and rewarding ones.

"The chance to grow up and live in a small town was one of the most valuable things of my life," he said. "It gave me a different outlook. In a small town, you do things yourself. You don't wait around for someone else to help you with your problems."

It was only natural that he made a home for his own family only a short distance from the original Conger homestead. While there was the usual swimming, fishing, running barefoot and berry picking, Charley never adopted the ambling pace of rural life.

When he was six years old he began delivering the Beacon Journal and another area newspaper. He continued this until he finished his college career.

In 1935, during the lean years of the Depression, Charley was graduated from high school. "There wasn't any money for college then," he said. "At the time, we had seven small gardens going just to raise food for the family."

Charley went to work with Bender and Loudon as a night billing clerk. During the day, he attended Hammel-Actual Business College. The next year, after completing the program at Hammel, he entered Kent State University. He would work from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. at Bender and Loudon ... banging away on the billing machine. The next morning he would be in the classroom at Kent State at 8 a.m. He attended school on a year-round basis. "There wasn't much time for a social life," Charley recalls. "It was work, study, sleep, eat and that was it."

But somehow he managed to meet and marry the former Velma Early of Akron during his years of academic bedlam. They honeymooned between the Summer and Fall sessions of 1938. Two years later, Charley was graduated from Kent State. He was one of the top 10 of his class. While working full time, he had managed to complete four years of college in three and earn high honors doing it.

A fellow worker at Bender and Loudon recalls Charley's years as a combination night billing clerk, husband and student. "He'd come in at 6 and we'd hear the billing machine going like mad in the next room. Pretty soon it would start to slow down. Then it would stop. Somebody would go in and wake him up and the machine would start roaring again. Frankly, 'said the fellow-employee,' I don't know how he did it. He used to average three or four hours sleep a night seven days a week."

After graduation, Charley was appointed Cleveland terminal manager for the trucking firm. At 22, he was the youngest terminal manager in the business. This was in 1940.

One year later, Charley fell in love. "Greasepaint and footlights got me," he said. And so, he became one of the charter members of the now well-known Peninsula Players.

The first production was a theatrical unknown called, "The Spooky Tavern." It was presented in 1941 for the benefit of the local PTA. Charley was in it. He has been in countless productions since then ... ranging from lead roles to bit parts.

In 1963, he played the lead part of "Wingergreen" in the musical "Of Thee I Sing." He did sing, too. In fact, he sang so hard that he strained his voice and was forced to stay off the stage of the barn on Rt. 303 during the 1964 season and this year.

Charley lost more than his voice in "Of Thee I Sing." He also lost his gray hair. The part called for a younger man, and while Charley is only 48 years old, his snowy hair made him look much older on stage. The mistress of theater is a demanding one and Charley ended up with brown hair. Consequently, a great many purchasing agents, traffic managers and other business friends were surprised to see a new version of Charley Conger enter their offices while "Of Thee I Sing" was being presented.

A member of Peninsula Players says of his love of community theater, "it was never a question of "where's Charley?" He was always there. "Whenever he was in a show, we knew it would probably be a good one. He approaches each role like a professional. He is always one of the first to learn his lines. It rubs off on the rest of the cast."

There are about 625 people living in Peninsula. Nearly all of them know Charley. "The phrase 'community leader' has become awfully trite," says one resident. "But it's the best way to describe Charley."

He was one of the leaders of a drive to turn a dangerous, water-filled quarry into a new safe and lovely swimming facility in Peninsula. Charley was also one of the residents who went to Washington and convinced governmental highway planners that Peninsula should not be served by a major, interstate highway.

"Charley really loves this place," said a neighbor. It's not surprising. His father E.B. Conger, was Mayor of Peninsula for 27 years.

"We've got something valuable out here," Charley says. "It's beautiful country and there's less and less of that in our world. We have a way of life that's good, too. Living out here, you get to do things that you might not do in a big city. There's the PTA, the Boy Scouts, your church, the community theater and a lot of other things. In a big town, you might not find the time for these things. And you'd be less of a person because of it."

Charley Conger is a proud man. He is proud of his community. He loves his home, which sprawls under a thick woods. He and his wife built a good part of it. Business friends were not surprised when may of Charley's customers at Bender and Loudon came out to the house to help saw and paint in the woods.

He speaks warmly of his family. He and his wife, Velma, adopted three children during the early years of their marriage. Son Don, 18, will enter Michigan State University this fall. Their 17 year old twin daughters, Jane and Janet, will complete high school this year. And of course, he is proud of the pace he keeps. "I guess I am just the impatient type," he says. "I've got to be doing things. I'm not interested in slow people or the easy life."

You could say that Charley Conger has come a long way since those younger days in the little village of Peninsula. But he's less than a mile from where he started. True, he's vice-president in charge of sales for a major Ohio trucking company. He was appointed to the position in 1959. But, as he might tell you while racing for the door, "I'm still a small town guy having a lot of fun in life." His friends report this description is most accurate.
