MILITARY: Charles Gordon Conger was just out of junior college when Japan attacked the United States in December 1941. He enlisted in the Marines. He was sent to Australia. On his third day of combat on New Britian a Japanese sniper shot him, causing him to lose the hip joint in the left leg. After more than a year in the hospital he came out with not hip joint and about 50% action in that leg.
