BIOGRAPHY:
"I was born in the 'Reform School' at Waukesha, Wisconsin; my father and mother both being there, to add quickly, however, as teachers. My uncle John, in New Brunswick, NJ got my father a job as clerk in a general store for a brick company in Sayreville, NJ where we spent the next three years. Then moved back to Praire du Sac, Wisconsin where he became partner in a general store, previously in the Conger family, where we lived thereafter. My mother had attended the Lake Forest Academy, where she specialized in Physical Education and Art, and did some nice oil painting until family duties interferred."Father died at 42 of heavy work in the heat and brain hemorrhage. Mother died at 98 of old age -- active till within a year. A little, energetic, remarkable and much loved lady - though not geneo-biographical, it is notable (and I can't refrain from telling) even doctors were impressed, she recovered from cancer of bladder operation at 62, lived with arthritis for 35 years, and recovered from two broken hips and broken right arm (simultaneous) at 91 to walk as usual about town on errands; remarried at 76 a childhood friend and lived six years in California until (Mr. Knapp) died.
"Outstanding event in my childhood -- it was all outstanding, as would be to a boy in a quiet, peaceful Mid-west town, with good parents and fine teachers, and some truly 'outstanding' townspeople, a swimming-hole, canoe and cane fish-pole, before the automobile, airplane, radio, or television; before erosion, pollution, the bulldozer, pesticides, weed-killer, oil - smoke and noise. A story in itself, rightly told, as it never will be. Talents and business accomplishments -- few; hobbies, plenty.
"Courses in Agriculture and Biology led me to a job at the U.S. National Museum (Smithsonian Institution) where I have been in the Departmany of Botany, as Associate Curator and Custodian of the Diatem collection, doing study of Diatems, now emeritus."
