MILITARY:
Jonas Conger served in Capt. Reid's Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Militia from 1 May 1836 to 23 Jul 1836. RECOLLECTIONS:
Researcher Connie (Frehner) Money writes the following: "Very little is known about Jonas Conger. It seems likely that he was born in [either] Rockingham county, North Carolina or Pendleton District, South Carolina, about 1794 ([some] Census says the latter). He was the son of Benjamin Conger, b. 1757.

"Family records have always said that Jonas had two wives [name of only one revealed in CFA I. REH]. I think this is probably in error and became confused with his father, Benjamin, who probably had two wives [name of only one revealed in CFA I. REH]. Jonas appears to have been approximately the same age as Parthena and it seems likely that she was his only wife. Parthena was born in 1794 and married at the age of 22.

"Family records also state that Jonas had a son named, John, by a 2d wife. Parthena out-lived Jonas by a good many years and they did not have a son named, John, who was younger than Simeon Washington. Both of the children living with them in 1820 were born after 1815. They were married in 1816, so it seems likely that the two children were both children of Jonas and Parthena. (Compiler's note [Maxine Leonard?]: The John Conger born about 1806 in North Carolina, living in Cherokee county, Georgia in 1860, was probably the brother of Jonas [Conger].]

"Jonas and Parthena left South Carolina prior to 1830. He was not located on a census record in 1830. In 1832, Jonas was living in Braker's District, Gwinnet county, Georgia. He drew land in the 1832 Cherokee Land and Gold Lottery. The land drawn was lot #15, 6th District, 3rd Section and consisted of 160 acres located in Cass county. The grand was taken up 20 Dec 1837 in the name of Jonas Conger, Sr. He also drew lot #1277-15th District, 2nd Section. This consisted of 40 acres and was located in Cherokee county. This land was taken up 2 Mar 1838.

"We visited Suwannee Old Baptist Church in Gwinet county on our trip through the South. It is known that Jonas' brother, Simeon, was a member of this church and it is possible that Jonas was also. He might very well be buried in the graveyard behind the church but here again we most likely will never know. There are many old unmarked graves which cannot divulge the names of those who lie beneath their ground.

"[Son] Benjamin fought with the South. After the war, [sons] Benjamin and Zachariah visited their brother Simeon's place. They, with some other young men, were organizing a posse to call on some of the Northern carpet-baggers, including their negro friends.

"Simeon informed them the war was over and they had better go back home and go to work. The boys remarked, 'Over -- like Hell it is! So far as we are concerned the war has just begun. We don intend to let no damned Yank with a bunch of Negroes rule over us!'."
[Note: While this account is quite interesting the reader should keep in mind that there are no source citations and many uses of the word, "likely." REH]

COMMENT:
Connie Money and her mother, Beulah (Conger) Frehner, did a lot of researching to establish the parents of Simeon Washington Conger. The summation was substantiated by some family notes found by Willa Dean (Beall) Eaves, [grand]daughter of Maude Conger, b. 1890, who is a descendant of Zachariah Conger, [son of Jonas Conger]. One fragment of paper stated, "Anna (sister) married Bill Finley." On the same paper was the notation, "Simeon Washington Conger, War 1861. Benjamin Conger, Indian War." (CFA I, p. 327)

The greatest mystery of this family is, "Benjamin Simeon," age 26, who appears with Parthena [Conger] on the 1850 census, along with Anna, 23, and Zachariah, 21. Willa Dean (Beall) Eaves has interviewed many of the descendants and done a lot of research, but cannot find any trace of such a person. Perhaps Parthena was telling the census reporter about her family, that she had a son, Benjamin, and a son, Simeon, and the reporter understood this to be one person. Benjamin had his own household at this time, so "Benjamin Simeon" must have been "Simeon Washington," who cannot be found in the census.

While Mrs. Money did not have Benjamin listed with the family, Mrs. Eaves has proved that Benjamin F. Conger in the 1850 census was the brother of Zachariah and Simeon Washington Conger. Evidence indicates that Benjamin F., 1828 (referred to as "Junior") was the son of Zachariah, nephew of Benjamin F. [Conger] (Senior).
