RESIDENCES: Nevada, MO; on 13 Nov 1993, Glenn and Edna moved from their farm near Nevada, MO to their new home in Springfield, MO.
BIOGRAPHY:
Glenn Monroe Stevens was born on 6 May 1906 in Hartwell, Henry Co., MO.He recalled when the family moved to a new locality northwest of Schell City, MO. It could not have been much colder, he believed. His father, Charlie, rented two boxcars. Frost covered the hair of the animals on the train ride and during the drive out to the new farm. Glenn also recalled a hugh flat skillet filled with hot coals that helped warm his bed that first night.
Glenn's early youth included learning to do farm work and to run a trap line. As he grew, he and his dad hunted skunks and kept them in a hen house until their fur ripened in winter, when they would bring more money. Glenn also shipped rabbits by the barrel full to market in Kansas City. A hunting dog always graced the Stevens farm. Glenn learned to love the chase of the coyote and has pursued that interest most of his life. His favorite hound was the July which can run and catch a coyote. Coyote hunting did not become a main occupation, but Glenn believed that his dogs were responsible for the death of hundreds of coytoes. These sly predators cost farmers untold sums of money each year by killing sheep, chickens, pigs and even calves. While Glenn enjoyed many a chase and catch, he actually performed an exemplary public service.
Glenn knew and handled work horses extremely well and he had a reputation in the community for this. He seemed to be able to break and work animals which could not be used by others. He also bred both horses and mules. One feather in his crown is that the sorrel mules which pulled Henry Truman's wagon during his inaugural parade were sired by a jack Glenn owned.
Glenn Monroe Stevens died on 15 Apr 1997 in Springfield, Greene Co., MO. He was buried at the Blue Mound Cemetery, in Harwood, Vernon Co., MO.
