OBITUARY: GERTRUDE E. DELANO
Gertrude Estelle [Conger] was the first of six girls born to Kathryn Estelle and Porterfield Conger on October 5, 1902 at the home of Kathryn's sister, Maude Davis in Tilden, Nebraska.

She graduated from Ewing, Nebraska high school and Peru State Teachers College, followed by teaching home economics for two years in the high school at Ree Heights, South Dakota. She went on to the University of Southern California to qualify to teach in California, which she did for a short time but returned to Ewing, Nebraska to marry Harold LeRoy DeLano on August 6th 1925.

They lived all of their 65 years of married life in St. Paul, Minnesota where their first jobs were with Montgomery Wards. After three years they purchased a grocery store on the East side of St. Paul and were there for ten years until the great depression came forcing them to give up the store.

During the time they had the grocery store, their children were born, a son Lee Richard, who died in three days due to birth injuries, and a daughter, Adora Jean, who was born three years later on Christmas Eve.

After they gave up the store, Harold gained a position with Prudential Insurance Company. They then bought a house on the West side where his debit was, living there forty years until his retirement from Prudential.

Gertrude was an Episcopalian all of her life, attending St. Peter's Church on the East side, Ascension Church on the West side, and St. Christopher's Church in Roseville where they lived since Harold's retirement. In 1989 she received, at the Episcopal Dicesan Convention, the first lay ministry award, "In celebration of a lifetime of ministry performed within and beyond the Episcopal church." She also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star for over 70 years and served as Worthy Matron in 1937.
