BIOGRAPHY: Finis and Bessie Conger
Finis Conger was born near Cincinnati, Iowa, October 10, 1885, near the Missouri border. In 1910, he filed on a Kincaid claim three miles north and four east of Brewster, NE. He came by train to Dunning and walked to Brewster. Thirty years later an old friend told him that he had done very well for a man who had walked to the Sandhills. A Kincaid was 640 acres, a homestead 160 acres. In the fall of 1910 he returned to Iowa and spent the winter. He returned in 1911 and built his original house, which measured about 12' x 12'. During his early months in Blaine county he worked for the Sandall Ranch.
One winter he helped drive a large herd of horses from easter Wyoming to Norfolk, NE. He was quoted as saying he didn't believe it possible to get as cold as they did on that trip. He farmed, with horses, about 200 acres. The principle crops were rye and corn. Since he was a firm believer in soil conservation none of his land suffered from wind erosion, so common in the area.
In the early 1930's he bought 640 acres from Ross and Edna Carpenter, who bordered him on the north. He also bought 480 acres from John Drury, who was Edna Carpenter's father. This land did not join any of the other.
On November 18, 1913 he married Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Stevens. She was born November 10, 1894, in the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri, near the town of Cross Timbers. She filed on a Kincaid Claim, October 18, 1912. The land is located in the southeast corner of German Valley. Her sister, Mrs. Fred (Cynthia) Smith had filed earlier.
Bessie came to visit and decided to stay there. Her 640 acres added to those of Finis totaled 2400. Since she had not completed her claim requirements by the time Finis had, they lived 6 months [on her claim] spring and summer and on his in fall and winter. Part of the time they lived in a tent.
They raised Hereford cattle and during the 1940's they sold a lot of 4-H calves. They also raised a lot of turkeys and chickens. In the late 1920's and 1930's they dressed and shipped turkeys by rail to Chicago in winter. They packed them in newspaper in wooden barrels.
The children born to Finis and Bessie were: Mildred Lorraine who was killed by a horse in 1920. Roy, who married Evelyn Jacobitz [and] had two daughters. He died in 1982. Charles, served in WWII and died in 1969. Robert, married Mildred Fox and had 3 children, [and] 2 step-children. Mary, married Fritz Kendall and had 2 daughters and lived in California. Betty, married George Hillin, [and had] 3 daughters, lived in California.
Finis and Bessie with Elber and Nellie Simon helped re-establish a Sunday School and Church in the Round Glen-Pleasant Valley area in 1927. They were very active in the work and support of the church and community. The children all attended rural school district #15 and graduated from Taylor Nebraska High.
In the fall of 1947 the Congers decided to dispose of the ranch and sold it to Rudy and Florence Niemoth. They took a trip to southern Missouri in late October to look for a retirement home. On October 31, 1947 they were both killed in a train - automobile accident at Rogersville, MO. They are buried in the Sargent, NE Cemetery. Sargent was their residence at the time of their death.
