BIOGRAPHY:
Warren Robert Conger was the eldest son of David Conger and Sarah Ellen Combs. His father, David, was a pioneer farmer. Times were hard in those days. It was very difficult to support a family.

When Warren was about five years of age, David and the family moved to Ft. Sheridan, Wyoming. They traveled to Ft. Sheridan in covered wagons, along with David's father, Enos and his family. This was a frontier town at this time, surrounded by cattle ranches and Indians. Supplies were hauled into town on large freight wagons, with ten yoke of oxen pulling three freight wagons hooked together. They traveled near the place where Indians surrounded and massacred General Custer and his men.

David and Enos bought a livery stable and feed barn. They experienced many hard times and sickness at Ft. Sheridan. Warren Robert was sick with Mountain Fever. He recovered after a long illness, but had to learn to walk again. After many hardships, the women persuaded the men to sell their business and they returned to Plainville, Kansas, where their daughter, Edna Minnie, was born. Later they moved to Woodston, [KS] where Sherman Ray and Luella May were born.

The children attended school at Woodston and a few other schools near this area. The Woodston school was located near the Solomon River and near Medicine Creek. The boys used to swim, fish and hunt birds and rabbits in the river bottom area. They loved the great outdoors.

When Warren was about fifteen years of age, on 4 April 1899, his mother, Sarah Ella, died from lock-jaw poisioning. She was buried in the Woodston Cemetery. Her death had a definite impact on the family. The older boys found employment in ranching and farming. Warren helped a Henry Clemons on cattle drives into northern Kansas and Nebraska. He followed the trade of farm-hand and ranch worker and became skilled in blacksmithing and carpentry work. He lived and worked in Codell, Plainville, Woodston, Hays City, Kansas and surrounding areas.

All the family loved music. Warren had a tenor voice and enjoyed singing. As a young man, he attended the dances as a square dance caller. He was nimble on his feet and was often called on to entertain at dances with song and tap dancing. He was fast on his feet, winning many matched races. He could run a hundred yards in ten seconds.

In the spring of 1909, Warren went to Friday Harbor, Washington, to visit his sisters, Mabel and Edna. He returned from Friday Harbor and stopped off at a place called Tremonton, Utah. Here he visited with the family of Joseph Albert Frazier and wife, Elizabeth Jane Hall and their daughter Adna. He knew Adna as a child when the Frazier family lived at Palco, Rooks county, Kansas. Warren and Adna were married in Brigham City, Box Elder, Utah, on 31 Dec 1909. They first lived at Colliston, Utah, where Warren worked for Claude Jensen on the farm. By 1916 he had saved enough money to purchase a farm southwest of Tremonton, which became the "Home Site" where they raised their family of eight boys and three girls. All grew up and married except one boy that died as an infant.

The first years, especially from 1917 thru 1924, were difficult years. The land needed improvements and leveling. Prices were low as a result of the depression following the First World War. In order to make money to support his large family Warren bought cattle and hogs which he butchered and sold to neighbors and families close around the city area. Warren was in debt at this time; most everyone was, but he said, "If a man is honest, he will always try to pay his debts." He worked and saved until he paid them, and tried hard to never default on anyone.

The years following the First World War saw the family grow. Several had married. They were a close knit family and enjoyed each other's company very much. All enjoyed music and several played different instruments. They tried to always gather each week at the home place to play and sing and have their good times.

When the Second World War came, the five older boys served their country. At the close of this war two boys remained in the service, Warren Edgar in the U.S. Air Force and Harold Sherman in the U.S. Navy. Warren Robert's home was always open to men in the service.

Warren Robert and all his family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During the year of 1947, Warren served as Scoutmaster of the troop which went to the Centennial Jamboree. It was at this time that the "This Is the Place" monument was erected at the mouth of Immigration Canyon in Salt Lake City, Utah. Warren's troops won camp honors this year and they were selected to unveil the monument. They stood as Honor Guard. Two boys were chosen from this group to pull the ropes that unveiled the monument. Warren had the boys draw lots to see who had this honor. His youngest twin son, Leo Robert, pulled one, and a Coombs boy pulled the other. Warren was very proud and happy to serve in this calling.

The Korean War followed the Second World War and the twins, the youngest sons, Leo Robert and Leon Herbert, were in this war together; also Warren Edgar and Harold Sherman, who had remained in the service. At the close of the Korean War, all of the boys returned home safely.

Shortly after this time, Mother Adna took sick and died 23 Mar 1954, following surgery for the removal of a malignant tumor on the brain. She died in the St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City. This loss was felt deeply by all who knew her. She had great kindness and affection for her family and friends. Years following found Warren a despondent and bewildered man. The loss of his dear wife was almost more than he could adjust to. He finally traveled and visited among his married children, helping many times in the best way he could. On 10 November 1954 he married a sister-in-law of Adna's, Elizabeth Cooke Frazier. They traveled and enjoyed life together, but a separation came.

Warren continued on travelling among his children; living with his son, Warren Edgar and wife, Ruth and family; a great length of time with daughter, Ione, and husband, Wayne Larsen and family; with daughter Ara and husband, Roger Nielson and family. Ara and Roger Neilson purchased the "W.R. Conger homeplace." Warren wanted once again to be back home, to the place he dearly loved. He lived quite some time with Ada and her family. All dearly loved their father, and have done all they could to make his last years as pleasant as possible.

Warren Robert, in 1972 [when this was written], was eighty-eight years of age; a High Priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is proud of his family and has a numerous posterity. He loved and cared for each and every one. He always believed a man should be completely honest with everyone, and that a man's word should be as good as his bond.
