29 Aug 1973 -- Joseph M. [Conger, my father] was born in 1861 and some time
after that my grandfather [Stephen Jackson Conger] joined the Union Army. He
was ill and home on furlough. Before he was fully recovered he started back to
join his company and died on the way. I have confirmation of this from the War
Records in Washington, DC. His name was Stephen Conger and he lived near
Marietta, OH.When we lived in Warren, Ohio we met a Napoleon Conger, who said his cousin was
tracing the Conger family and he would let us know what she found out, but he
never did. We thought he must be related as he looked a lot likemy father. He
was a professor in the schools and later the head of a small college in the
South.25 Jul 1974 -- Remember me? I bought the Conger Book last October and now that
I have time to read it thought I would let you know that I think you did a very
good job of compiling all of those records. At first it was just a jumble of
names. I read some and thought parts were interesting but I couldn't see how
it led any of us back to the first Belconger. I was just about to write you
and ask, then a few weeks ago I got it out again and started with with Stephen
1883 and worked back and found we went back to the first sone, John. Then I
traced your family and found yours was same as mine -- saw where yours branched
off.Of course this is old stuff to you, but it is new to me and I found it very
interesting; am boring my family telling them about it. I think I wrote you
in the first letter about Lester C. from Ashland (Ohio). My father just said
he was a cousin and I presumed a first, but I see by the records his father
was a cousin to my father. I met him (Lester) in Ashland once, and he came
to Warren to my father's funeral in 1930.In looking through the "BOOK" I happened to notice the name of Napoleon C.
I stopped to look and found he was the one I met in Warren. His wife, Gladys
Pelton had lived next door to us, and she was the principal of the school
my children attended the first year after we moved to Warren.

COMMENT: Robert Guilinger wrote: I believe Nellie Leota Conger, born 17 Aug 1905, in Dalzell, Washington Co., OH was named after my Aunt, Nellie Leota Guilinger, who died in 1904 in Washington Co., OH as the result of burns suffered in a stove oil explosion. Early in 1995, I wrote to my remaining aunt, 97 year old, Elizabeth Marie Guilinger Foust about this. My Aunt Bettie only vaguely remembers her sister, Nellie, as she was only 6 years old at the time of her death. However, she remembers that her mother (Margaret E. Conger) knew the Dearth family, including Olive Mae Dearth, the mother of Nellie Leota Conger. It was a custom in the early 1900's to name another child after one who had died. Usually it was done in the family; i.e., a cousin.
