678. Noel Conger
Noel CongerPARENTS: Job Conger and Robah Potter
BIOGRAPHY: The first settlers in Malone, NY were Enos, John and Nathan Wood in 1802, with Noel Conger accompanying them or following very soon afterward. Enos Wood and Noel Conger had assisted Joseph Beeman of Georgia, VT in surveying the township for Richard Harrison in 1801. It was said that Noel took 200 acres of land facing Main and Fort Covington Streets in the western part of the village, in payment for his surveying services. He was also said to have been the first man to cross Salmon River at the chasm where the stone bridge now is (Main Street Bridge), making the crossing on a hemlock log which he felled for the purpose. He remained at Malone for about 20 years, then removed to St. Lawrence county.

(Furnished by Harold Murton Hyde)BIOGRAPHY:
From "The History of St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties" [New York] by Franklin B. Hough, Page 507 it states for Malone: "Settlements were begun in 1802, by Enos, Nathan and John Wood, from St. Albans, the town having been visited one or two years previous by the former. Noel Conger and many others came in 1803, or before. Since Noel married in 1805 he probably returned to Milton, VT for that occasion but I doubt if their children were born there since Colvin 1807 is recorded as being born at Malone it follows that all the rest were also with the possible exception of Lorinda who may have been born at Morristown.

1870. Colvin Conger
Colvin CongerBIOGRAPHY: A Hammond Abolitionist [Hammond, NY]
Another of Hammond's links with the past was broken on Feb. 6, 1902, when Colvin Conger died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.L. Sigourney, at the age of 95.The old gentleman had been born near Malone on Aug. 20, 1807, and was brought to the Hammond area in 1819 by his parents who were pioneer settlers of the village. Soon after his marriage, about 1830, Conger moved to the vicinity of Canandaigua, NY, and he very shortly became well-known as a sort of "fire-eating Abolitionist."
At the time many leaders in both church and state were willing to go to almost any length to avoid a confrontation on the subject of human slavery. After all, even many of the so-called "Tories" who had fled to Canada during the American Revolution to form the "United Empire Loyalists" took their slaves along and handed down whole families of them to their descendants like so much real estate; and many persons feared that this question would occasion the wrenching apart of the nation into warring factions as eventually did occur in the Civil War.
Colvin Conger is remembered as one of the organizers of the abolitionist movement in the Canadaigua area and he was one of the first to introduce the question into national poliokings,Brookings,SD
