9181. Henry Norton Crowell
Henry Norton CrowellPARENTS: Wilber Fisk Crowell and Margaret Bowler
OCCUPATION: carpenter, autobody maker
BIOGRAPHY:
Henry Norton Crowell, like his father, was even-tempered. He was honest, kind and trusting. He was always a hard worker and ready to lend anyone a helping hand. Because of his trust in others, he lost a farm in Colorado and an auto-building business in Des Moines, Iowa. His salesman's embezzling wiped out his business, but rather than take bankruptcy, he personally paid off each debt several years later. He worked for the WPA for awhile. Later he worked for the Railway Express Agency as a carpenter until his retirement.
He returned to Iowa from Colorado in 1914 and never went back.
Henry met Violet Wright when he attended a "red hog" sale. She was working for the people sponsoring the sale. They were married in Ottumwa, Iowa. After their first child was born they moved to Des Moines. They bought an acre of land and spent many years building on and remodeling the house in which they lived for 48 years.
They moved to the Valley View Retirement Home in Des Moines, [IA] in 1965.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry Norton Crowell (1885 - 1979)
He wasn't a scientist...professional man...politician...businessman. He was a carpenter--and I say that with much pride. He was my father.Hiram Crowell, 1809, a cooper, died in 1853 at Dearborn Co., IN, leaving his widow, Mary Conger, 1814, with eight children -- five months pregnant.
About a year later Mary's parents, David S. Conger, 1787 and Rebecca Sharp, emigrated to Monroe Co., IA, with daughters, Rhoda (Hunter), Rachel (Peas, Brewington), Jane (Holsclaw), Sabina (Barber) and deaf mute son, Elias M. and wife, Mary Jane, and families. A year later Mary joined them, escorted by her brother, Edward, unmarried at the time.
Mary homesteaded in Monroe Co., IA and raised her children to maturity. Her son-in-law, John Sutfin, came home from the Civil War in such poor health that he and his wife, Jane, and family left for the west finally settling in Las Vegas, NM in 1875. John Sutfin was a dentist, and he built the Grandview Hotel, the first four story building in town.
Mary's children were all grown and settled on her land in Iowa, so she and her unmarried son, Wilbur [Crowell], went to Las Vegas to live with the Sutfins (in the 1880 census).
Wilbur worked on the railroad and at the hotel for his sister, and there met Maggie Bowler of near Winfield, KS, whose father, Thomas, had helped build the railroad through Missouri during the war.
Wilbur and Maggie [Crowell] were married in Las Vegas where their family began with sons George and Henry. Meanwhile, Mary [Conger] had gone back to Iowa where she died in [May] 1884. In due time, Wilbur took his family to Iowa where he lived on the 40 acres inherited from his mother.
Henry [Norton Crowell] went through the 8th grade in school but had to quit to help on the farm. His parents died when he was 17 [in 1902], but he and his brother George managed to look after their two younger brothers, Clarence and Guy, when they both homesteaded near Willard, Colorado.
Henry went back to Iowa to marry Violette Wright in 1914. Their son, Floyd, was born a year later at Ottumwa, [IA], and Maxine came along after the family moved to Des Moines in 1919.
Henry worked on many buildings there including the dam, and later went to work for Kratzer Carriage Company. After this company folded, Dad went into the body-building business for himself in the early thirties. His salesman absconded with many of the down payments on jobs and he lost his business. He was advised to file for bankruptcy, but he refused.
Unable to find work, he still found dignity on WPA until he became house carpenter for the Railway Express [where he worked] until his retirement. During this time he paid all his business debts. Funny thing that I never knew we were poor.
I shall always remember how kind and honest he was. He spanked me once, at my mother's insistence, because I had stayed to see a movie through three times.
During the 15 years he lived in the retirement home he always joked with other residents, and for several years he would shave some of the men in the care center. I never heard him swear or speak unkindly about anyone.
He was devoted to my mother, who had three spinal fusions and later became an arthritic invalid. She never complained. She did much of her housework in a wheelchair until the folks gave up their home. Mother died in 1972.
In his late seventies, Dad suffered a severe stroke but overcame it, learning to walk and talk again. One hip simply wore out and he used a cane until the age of 92 when he resorted to pushing a wheelchair to steady himself in going to the dining room. He died [on] August 17th [1979 in Des Moines, IA].

Violette WrightProblem: Was her first name, Violette or Violet? Maxine Crowell Leonard uses both spellings on the same page of CFA I. Violet on p. 705 of CFA II.
BIOGRAPHY:
Violette had poor health all her married life, although she never complained about it. She had abdominal surgery after Maxine's birth and a goiter was removed. She had three spinal fusions, where bone was taken from her leg and grafted into her spine. Just as she was getting around pretty well she became a victim of arthritis and had to use a wheel chair in 1950. Despite this she did her own housework except for the laundry and running the sweeper. She died 29 Feb 1972.

RESIDENCES: 644 W. Lennox; Yreka, CA 96097
BIOGRAPHY:
Clarence and Alice Crowell settled on a farm near Sterling, [CO], but the land was so poor they couldn't make a living. They left there with three small children and about $25.00 cash, and went to California where Clarence went to work for the water company.Clarence never knew what his middle initial, "L." was for until he visited his brother Henry in 1958 and was told his middle name was "Lemly." This was the first reunion of the two brothers since Henry left Colorado in 1914 -- a period of 44 years. Clarence was 9 and Guy was 6 when their parents died. They were left in the custody of their aunt, Mary Rebecca Neill. Their oldest brother, Geroge, petitioned for their guardianship in 1909 when he married and homesteaded in Colorado. Henry went with them at the same time and purchased a homestead, but returned to Iowa in 1914 to get married and never went back.
