9164. Mary Eliza Sutfin
Mary Eliza SutfinBIRTH: near Eddyville, IA
RECOLLECTIONS: Of Mary Eliza Sutfin Koogler as recorded for her granddaughter,
Marietta Jane Burtch Caywood, in Kansas City, MO, in 1936 When father went to war in 1861 I was expected to help work on the farm. I gathered eggs and milked as soon as I could do that. Father was in the war for three years. When he returned I was eight years old. That was the age I started school. We went to the Barber School in Iowa. It was at the corner of the 'Barber Place,' and owned by Aunt Sabina (Conger) Barber. It was a 2 1/2 mile hike to school. We went when the days were so that we could. We started at daylight. We went through the fields to school. I was scared to death of the horses and cattle, and the woods made us afraid. At school there were 19 kids. My parents were so strict. A good many fellows from Sunday School, and some from school, wanted to come see me, but my father forbade it. A Mr. Stinson, a nice young man who was an officer in the Red Cross, was allowed to walk by my side from the meeting to my home, if father and mother walked behind. I went to a church social once with Mr. Stinson, but we had to be home by 9:00 o'clock.

John Hampden KooglerOCCUPATION: newspaper man
RECOLLECTIONS: Of Mary Eliza Sutfin Koogler as recorded for her granddaughter, Marietta Jane Burtch Caywood, in Kansas City, MO, in 1936
At first [in Las Vegas, NM] we lived right over the newspaper office. I saw Mr. Koogler often. We started going to church together, and then he went everywhere with me. We were married in April in the old Presbyterian Mission. We had a big wedding supper at home. We took all the furniture out to make room for all the tables. Then we all went to the Exchange Hotel and danced until morning. We were invited to all the Mexican dances because of my husband being a newspaper man. We went to the old Romero home to parties. They would give a freshly dressed kid as a present of esteem to the "American Newspaper Man."
The mail coaches came from Santa Fe right down Pacific Street at four in the morning. You could hear them yelling three or four blocks away -- then come rattling past our windows, change horses, and start off again. The Eastern mail came in the daytime.
My husband and father had their efforts rewarded when the Santa Fe Railroad chose Las Vegas for their route to the West. They were in the ceremony for this event and my father had a coach which met the trains. The hotel bus, with four horses, turned over one day on the steep activity on the way back from Hot Springs. My husband got hurt pretty bad protecting our daughter Nell, who was sitting on his lap.
When "Billy the Kid" was killed, they brought him right past our house, thrown in the back of a cart. No respect was given to the corpse at all. My husband often aroused the ire of outlaws and others of that caliber because of his newspaper editorials or his activities as a lawyer, but he never wore a gun as did most of the men.

John Russell CrowellAKA: Called, Russell Crowell (CFA I, p. 721)
BIOGRAPHY:
Russell Crowell was a painter. He lived in Ottumwa, Iowa. He kept the family records for many years, thereby making it possible for his work to be compiled and extended. He was a big man, with a hearty laugh. He organized the CROWELL-CONGER Family Reunions for many years at Ottumwa. He was so jolly as he handed out "pop" iced in tubs to the children, which was a rare treat in the late 1920's.He had his own paint store, which was later taken over by his son Raymond, who later branched off into interior decorating.
As a result of strokes, Russell became bedfast and lay helpless for ten years before his death. The only word he could say was, "no." He sobbed with joy when a copy of the Crowell book was presented to him in 1962. His face lighted up with recognition at each name and picture.
