9151. Louis Raymond Phillips

Louis Raymond Phillips

BIOGRAPHY: Louis Raymond Phillips
Originally from Iowa, was a cowboy in Montana (during which time he became acquainted with the cowboy artist Charles Marion Russell). Later in life homesteaded in Musselshell County, Montana. At one point he worked in the copper mines in Montana, I believe around Butte but am not certain. He was injured in a mining accident during the Great Depression and was unable to work after that. He died of a coronary occlusion. Was known as Ray. My second cousin twice removed Charles Hulette Friedrich told me, "Your grandfather Ray had one blue eye and one brown eye."

DEATH-HEALTH_HISTORY: coronary occlusion

Mabel Blanche Perkins

Mabel Blanche Perkins

OCCUPATION: School teacher

RESIDENCES: Montana; Illinois

BIOGRAPHY: Mabel Blanche Perkins
Mabel Perkins was Ray Phillips's wife. She was originally from Illinois, the daughter of James Dunbar Perkins, who published a newspaper in Easton, Illinois (we still have his printing press), and Barbara Friedrich, who immigrated in her early childhood from Unterleinleiter, Oberfranken, Kingdom of Bavaria in the 1860's.

Blanche, as she was known, was a schoolteacher by training. She and her mother homesteaded in Musselshell County, Montana. At one point they were so homesick to see trees they rode all day to get to the nearest tree, which it turned out had a dozen dead Indians "buried" in its branches (so the wolves wouldn't eat the corpses.) They overnighted and rode back home the next day having seen the tree.

After Ray was injured in the mining accident, she went to work as a school teacher at the Crow Reservation in Montana, where my mother was the only white pupil. By all accounts Blanche was very smart. She worked integral calculus problems at night out of boredom, by lamplight, as a means of entertainment.

In later years she and her family moved back to Illinois. She and Ray are buried in Easton, Illinois. She died of cancer.
(Written by Allan P. Mustard)
