He built wheels and wagons and rented out the blacksmith part of the shop. I finished high school there in 1931 and left to work on construction in Arkansas and Louisana, then back to Oklahoma where I was married to Ruby Mae Berryhill."We came to Merced, Calif. in 1936 where I worked on construction. In 1939, I started contracting on my own. Thirty years later I am doing the same thing. We have one son, Robert Douglas, who is California Highway Patrolman. We belong to the Methodist Church. I am a 32 degree Mason and Ruby Mae belongs to the Eastern Star."
Before his line was established he wrote, "It is a shame I can not trace my lineage no further back than DeKalb, Tenn. On the other hand, I have the lineage of my bulldogs traced all the way back to England."

MILITARY: Drafted in 1944 and trained at Fort Hood, TX. Shipped out of San Francisco to join the 96th Infantry Division which was preparing for the invasion of the Philippines and later Okinawa. As a foot soldier he was in the front line invasions of the Philippine Islands of Leyte, Mindanao and the Japanese island of Okinawa. He was decorated with the Bronze Medal for heroic service and received the Purple Heart for wounds he received in combat on Okinawa. Honorably discharged as a Private First Class in 1946. U.S. Army 1944-1946.
DIVORCE: The marriage of Roger Fowler Conger and Ama Lee Cade ended in divorce in 1946.
OCCUPATION: Worked in the east Texas oilfields as a roughneck. He worked for the Rowan Drilling Company on its early rigs in Wood Co., TX. He and his second wife, Martha, were constantly moving from oilfield to oilfield as the exploration expanded throughout Texas. He had much success working in the oilfields and was soon an area Superintendent. They moved 36 times before 24 Dec 1955 when they finally moved to Louisiana. Shortly after moving to Louisiana he transferred to Rowan's Offshore Louisiana Division. He was Drilling Superintendent for the Drilling Tender Carle Sharp and later Rowan Rig 24. In 1974, he retired from Rowan Drilling and went to work for Gulf Oil Company in New Orleans, LA. While working for Gulf he had the distinction of drilling a wild cat well off the coast of Florida to a depth of over four miles. In 1979 he formed his own drilling consulting company. He worked for many operators in the Tuscaloosa Trend Play of the 1980's across Central Louisiana. He drilled several wildcats that were greater than 5 miles deep.
AKA: Given the nickname, Blondie, for his blond hair, by his oil field co-workers. The name stuck and most who knew him called him by this name.
DIVORCE: The marriage of Roger Fowler Conger and Martha Jean Nabors ended in divorce in 1982 or 1983 in Louisiana.

I was recently in contact with a Mrs. Clarine Tucker of Pensacola, FL. She had recently completed a ship cruise up the British Columbia coast to Alaska and on a whim, phoned me because she was interested in the name CONGER.Here is all I know about the CONGER name, for what it is worth. As far back as I can go is my grandfather christened JEFFERSON DAVIS, named after you know who. I don't know really where he was born but he was a horse and buggy bonafide doctor in Quitman, Wood county, TX for many years. He also had a brother, Andrew Conger, also a doctor who practiced somewhere in the Eastern states.
Jeff Davis married "Jimmy Haines" whose father was evidently a colonel in the Confederate Army, and [for] who[m] the town of Hainesville, TX [was named]. There is a Conger street in Quitman and a few Congers scattered about the area. Also a few colored Congers.
My grandfather and Jimmy Haines had two children, namely my aunt Reber and my father, Eugene Martin. My father died in 1939. He left Texas and went to Montana where he worked a while on the railroad as a "boomer" brakeman. He then moved to Revelstoke, B.C. where he met and married my mother, Ethel Tetlock, and where I was born, 27 Sep 1920, and christened JEFF DAVIS. My sone is Jeff Davis III and his son is Jeff Davis IV.
