DIVORCE: The marriage of Erie Locke Conger and Agnes J. Sawnson ended in divorce in 1927.
RECOLLECTIONS: In October 1969 he wrote, "I have followed many occupations from driving a street car in Kansas City to teaching Adult Education during the Depression. At present I am Managing Editor and Business Manager of "The Liberty Press," a weekley newspaper at Liberty Center, Ohio.
"My biography would fill a book. I have been nearly everywhere and seen nearly everything, and am still a student, both of history and mankind.
"My father was Charles L. Conger, also born in Douglas county, Kansas, and was born in the late 1850's [sic, 1862]. He was a Jack-of-all-trades and master of none. My grandfather was John Conger, b. 1817, who moved from New York state before the Civil War, coming overland alone and shipping his furniture by water down through the Gulf, up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to Westport landing (now Kansas City) and then overland to his homestead in Douglas county, Kansas. He operated the first underground station for run-away slaves out of Missouri and missed being burned out by Quantrell by a hair. He was a dairy farmer and sold butter to the army at Fort Leavenworth.
"My father, Charles, moved to Lawrence from Hesper when I was five years old so that he could send me to school at Lawrence.
"I left Kansas in 1927, and have traveled from coast to coast and border to border and followed many trades in my travels. If you (Maxine Leonard) think you are the 'crazy cousin,' you ain't seen nothin' yet! My experiences would make Mark Twain look like a piker. I may write them someday, in spite of the embarrassment it might cause my children.
"I wish you the best of success in your work on genealogy. You must be a detective or a skip tracer at heart."
