Delight Benedict

Delight Benedict

REFERENCE-CONFLICT: The "Benedict Genealogy," p. 93 says Delight was a daughter of John Benedict and Esther Stebbins. Perhaps they were the parents of the Delight Benedict, a maiden lady, teaching school at age 50. Charles L. Conger records state Delight was the daughter of Aaron Benedict.

1560. Phoebe Jane Conger

Phoebe Jane Conger

BIRTH: Abt 1810, CFAI, p. 272

BIRTH-DEATH: b. 20 Sep 1807, NY; d. 20 Aug 1883, Allenton, Berlin, St. Clair, MI (Furnished by Linda Cendro)

NAME: Phoebe (Jane) Conger, CFA II, p. 711

COMMENT: On the front page of "The Allen/Conger Family Newsletter," Summer 2000, Volume 10, Issue 1, appeared the following:

"As we revealed briefly in our 1999 newsletter, we have discovered, with the help of Buel Conger of Fort Gratiot, MI, that the family of Phoebe Conger Allen is included in "The Conger Family of America" publication which has two huge volumes, and was compiled by Maxine Crowell Leonard and published in 1972."

An examination of both the 1972 and 1990 volumes doesn't seem to support this statement if one reads it to mean that Phoebe Conger and her descendants are listed in "The Conger Family of America," (CFA).

The family of her parents, Jesse Conger and Delight Benedict does appear on page 272 of Volume One. Phoebe Conger is listed as their first child with a birth date of Abt. 1810. No place of birth is listed and no date of death is listed. There is no husband listed. Checking the section of Volume One where the non-Conger surnames appear reveals no men with the Allen surname.

Therefore, I believe it can be said that Volume One of the CFA doesn't reveal that this Phoebe Conger ever married.

Checking the non-Conger surname section of Volume Two of the CFA one finds two family groups headed by men with the Allen surname. Neither of them is husband of Phoebe Conger.

At the back of Volume Two is a section listing marriage information. Near the top of page, 711 we find her listed as Phoebe (Jane) Conger, d/o Jesse Conger, b. 1784, found on page 282 of CFA I. She is listed as married on 9 Apr 1836 to John Fransham, by James Dean, J.P. of Utica, NY. As far as this writer can determine this is the only reference in either volume of CFA to a marriage of Phoebe (Jane) Conger. That isn't to say that she wasn't married twice and that the marriage to John Fransham was the second marriage. (Written by Richard E. Henthorn, 11 Jan 2001)

QUESTION-MARRIAGE: Can anyone cite a source to prove the marriage of Phoebe Conger to Douglass Allen? Can anyone cite a source that would prove the Phoebe Conger who married John Fransham was in fact the daughter of Jesse Conger and Delight Benedict?

599. Roswell Conger

Roswell Conger

REFERENCE: Researcher Ivan A. Conger and his wife, Dorothy, of Owosso, MI frequented garage sales and auctions. In 1970, while they were attending a sale in Owosso someone noticed a black leather case with letters in it written by various members of the Roswell Conger family, b. 21 Sep 1793. The finder called Ivan's attention to the item and he bought it for 25 cents. The mystery remains as to who preserved the letters for over 100 years and how they happened to be in the sale attended by Ivan Conger. The Congers living in the area of the sale were from another branch, Job Conger, 1819.

The Roswell Conger family letters frequently mention activities in Waterville, NY, which is just a short distance north of Sangerfield. Hops seem to have been their main harvest. It is not known if Elijah Conger, brother of Roswell, was engaged in this business, but his son, Daniel, b. 1828, and grandson, DeWitt, b. 1854, apparently had a thriving business, according to the letterhead.

The letters can be found in CFA II, p. 199-2065.
