Latham H. Conger, 70, member of an historic Akron [OH] family, died Thursday night at his home, 191 Harcourt Drive. He had been ill for many months.Mr. Conger was the son of the late Col. A.L. Conger, early Akron industrialist, and builder of the famed "Conger Mansion" at 196 Ash Street.
Bron in Akron on E. Mill street, Mr. Conger saw the sleepy village of his boyhood become a roaring industrial metropolis. He played a role in its growth -- and in the growth of the rubber industry.
Mr. Conger finished college at Kenyon where he played fullback on a team that defeated Ohio State in 1899. He went into railroading after college and served several systems, including the New York Central.
In 1910, he returned to Akron to take a position with the Diamond Rubber Co. He later associated with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and the B.F. Goodrich Co. in executive positions.
Attracted by opportunities in the booming automobile field, Mr. Conger left the rubber business in 1924 to organize the Overland - Akron Company. He served as its president until retirement.
At various times, Mr. Conger was active in Republician politics. He was a member of Masonic groups, including the Knights Templar. Mr. Conger belonged to the Akron City Club. He served for many years as a vestryman at St. Paul's Church.

She is also survived by 2 brothers; Bill & Martha Powelson of Ashley, Michigan & George Powelson also of Ashley, Michigan; 1 Daughter in law, Betty Ackels of Ovid, Michigan & 1 Brother in law, Ivan & Dorothy Conger of Owosso, Michigan.
She was predeceased by her parents, son Richard, 1 great granddaughter, 1 sister Lula, & 3 brothers Gerald, Norman, & Orlin.
Memorials may be made to the Ovid Ambulance Service or to the Ovid Healthcare Center. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
