(Source: FindAGrave)BIOGRAPHY: From the "Beacon Journal" of Peninsula, Ohio, 1933
"Shrewd, with a salty wit, and a supreb sense of the ridiculous, Elmer Conger, long time mayor of Peninsula, and faithful correspondent of the Beacon Journal editor, is in this dull age, that rare thing, an individual."Conger is a product of rural America, although he has seen Peninsula gradually become the haven of the city gentleman farmer. A lifetime of politics, far from making him stubborn and dull, has served to sharpen his tongue. His conversation actually [warrants] the comment: 'Pithy.' He has been the pride and joy of whole processions of reporters and the envelope bearing his name in the Beacon Journal's reference department, is stuffed with stories about his weather prophecies, his 'store teeth,' and his knowledge of flowers and politics.
"He was the first mayor of Peninsula in 1901, and has served, with a few interruptions, for 28 years in that position until defeated by C.B. Chisholm, my a majority of seven votes, in 1929.
"I got out the whole Conger family, too, but it didn't help, he says with a grin. The whole Conger family is 18 votes strong and no small factor in Peninsula elections.
"Conger was not only mayor but justice of the peace for Boston township and baliff of Judge E.H. Boylan's common pleas court. It was in this last position that he first gained attention in local newspapers. When times were dull, he was a godsend to court reporters, and both Conger and the newspapermen thrived on the arrangement.
"Abruptly retired from politics by the voice of the people, Conger has been designated 'Sage of Peninsula' by copy desk men. Undisturbed by the collapse of his political fortunes, Conger spends his time hunting, raising dogs, identifying flowers, running for title of 'biggest liar in Peninsula,' and building up his reputation for the great come-back.
"He lives on Boston township road, two houses from the residence he was born in, and on a single hill live five different branches of the Conger family. The children run into large numbers, with Elmer contributing six.
"You really can't see the landscape for Conger children and Conger dogs," he remarks dreamily, staring at the 'oracle.'
"The Oracle' is the hill opposite the Conger house. Begun as a simple joke, it has developed into one of those things that bewilder strangers and convulse those who know the secret.
"Conger, who has a taste for classic Greek mythology, once darkly referred to the 'oracle' as the source of his weather prophecies. He finds it very convenient, for he admits 'if the prophecy failed all I had to say was that the blamed Oracle must have been off his feed the day I asked him about it.'
"Conger's letters are like his conversation -- pungent, to the point, witty, with no punches pulled. He is an admirer of the Beacon Journal editorial policy, talks darkly of Woodrow Wilson, has numerous jokes to tell on the 'democrats,' and looks proud when identified as Peninsula's republican committeeman."

I remember living next door to Mrs. Conger as a young boy (I was 9 or 10 at the time). She had a fractured vertibra in her back and could not walk down her very long driveway to the mailbox. I would take her mail to her and she would give me a "shiny new penny".
She enjoyed watching baseball games on television and had two cats named "Whitey Ford" and "Mickey Mantle".
She was the person who taught me that the right faucet on a sink is for cold water and the left faucet is for hot.
