OBITUARY: Elmer J. Conger 25 Jun 1901 - 15 Nov 1989
Elmer J. Conger, 1505 Bluff St., Delta, CO, died of cancer Wednesday in Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 88.He was born to Ira Frank and Mollie Rankin Conger in Jewell County, Kan. He spent his childhood and attended schools in Kansas.
He and his brother, James, traveled to Canada in 1917 to help their brother, Code, build a home on land he had settled. In the winter of 1918, Mr. Conger was in Butte, Mont. and became ill during the great flue epidemic, nearly dying.
He moved to Trenton, NE, to work for Emil Marquardt at harvest time in 1925.
He married Anna Marquardt on Oct. 4, 1924 in Atwood, Kan. The couple farmed in Trenton, Neb and after the dust storms of the early 30s, they moved to Cedaredge, [CO]. Mr. Conger worked as a farm laboret there until 1943, then they moved to Kahoka, MO to help his brother, Cliff, run a ranch during World War II. The couple moved back to Delta [CO] in 1946 where Mr. Conger was employed by the city of Delta as a cemetery sexton for 27 years until his retirement.
Mr. Conger enjoyed fishing and small game hunting with his family.
Other survivors include a son, Gale of Delta; a daughter, Twila Hillis of Cedaredge; five grandsons; two granddaughters; six great grandsons and eight great granddaughters.
Four brothers, Code, James, Wilmer and Clifford and four sisters, Mable, Ellen, Pearl and Elva are deceased.
Burial in Cedaredge Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Anna Christina Marquardt Conger - Jan. 10, 1906 - March 18, 2000 Anna Conger a resident of Valley Manor Care Center of Montrose, [CO] for over two years died there on Saturday, March 18, 2000 at the age of 94.
Anna was born in Trenton, Nebraska on Jan. 10, 1906 to Emil and Minnie (Hedky) Marquardt, on the family homestead. She spent her childhood and attended a country school near Trenton. She was the 10th child in a family of 16 children; 4 brothers and 11 sisters.
When Anna wasn't helping care for the younger children, she was busy helping her dad in the fields, driving a team of horses and doing many things. Her big joy was when her dad gave her a mouth harp. She spent many hours playing the harp and singing to herself.
Anna met her husband, Elmer Conger, in the fall of 1924, when Elmer came to Trenton and found harvest work at the Marquardt farm. Anna and Elmer started dating and were married October 4, 1924 at Atwood, Kansas. Anna's dad sold them a section of ground. They moved an old grain[er]y on the property, fixed it up for a house, had a well drilled and started housekeeping. It was here where their two children were born, Gale and Twila. A dust storm wiped them out in the 1930's, so the family packed up and moved to Cedaredge, Colorado. Both Anna and Elmer worked at many jobs. Anna worked in the fruit sheds, restaurants and wherever else she could find work.
In December of 1943 they moved to Kahoka, MO, to help Elmer's brother run his farm. The couple moved back to Delta, Colorado in 1946, and Anna went back to work at the restaurants until she retired.
Elmer died of cancer on November 15, 1989 at Delta, CO. Anna lived in the family home until December of 1997, when she fell and was taken to Colorow Care Center for two months. She then moved into the home of her daughter, Twila Hillis, in Montrose. Suffering from congestive heart failure, she was taken to Valley Manor Care Center for two years.
Anna enjoyed fishing, playing her harp, dancing and traveling. Other survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Gale and Jessica Conger of Delta, a daughter and son-in-law, Twila and Jim Hillis, of Montrose; a brother, Harold and a wife, Alice Marquardt of Hebren, NE; a brother-in-law, Chuck Seybold of Benkleman, NE; seven grandchildren and spouses, Ken and Gwen Hillis of Cedaredge; Jerry and Ann Hillis of Winlock, WA; Don and Sharon Hillis of Whale Pass, Alaska; Cindy and Doug Herbison and Linda Rull, Glen and Joyce Conger, Gene and Shana Conger all of Delta; 22 great-grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren; ... many niece and nephews survive.
Eleven sisters: Rose, Bertha, Amanda, Ella, Lyda, Minnie, Martha, Elsa, Ester, Florence and Jessie, three brothers: Emil, Leo and Oscar, and three great grandsons are deceased.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Anna Conger will be Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta with Howard Cowan officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedaredge Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2000 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service, Delata, CO.
